Al Campbell begins his 14th season at Walsh. He served the past 13 years as head track and cross country coach. Last season he led the Cavs to their first conference title and first championship since winning the NAIA District 22 Championship in 1976. After back-to-back seventh place finishes at the AMC Championships in 2005 and 2006, the Cavs placed sixth in 2007, followed by back-to-back fourth place finishes in 2008 and 2009, and solid third place finishes in 2010 and 2011. Campbell has qualified numerous individuals for nationals. One of Ohio’s and the nation’s most respected coaches, Campbell came to Walsh in July of 1999.
Campbell’s career in education and athletics spans more than three decades. Al started his career as a physical education teacher and coach at Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1964 and remained there until 1968. In 1968, he began an association with the University of Akron that would last 31 years. Campbell served as head track and cross country coach from 1968 until 1995, the longest service of any coach at Akron.
Campbell coached the men for 27 years and the women for 11 years (1984-95). His teams captured three championships and produced numerous All-Americans. Campbell’s overall coaching record in cross country (361-203) and track (151-65) are complimented by his being named North Star Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1989. He was named the Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Coach of the Year in 1984. In 1995, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Akron’s Dapper Dan Club. He is also a member of the Summit County and University of Akron Sports Hall of Fame.
Campbell served as Walsh’s assistant track and cross country coach in 1995 and 1996. He was an adjunct professor from 1995-1998, and currently teaches in the physical education department. Campbell was named AMC Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2002.
Al and his wife Nancy are the proud parents of two children, Patrick and Lisa, and three grandchildren, John Jr., Amy and Katelin. The Campbell’s reside in Massillon.
