BASEBALL: Cavs (16-17, 11-4 AMC N) Take Over First Place in AMC North

Walsh (16-17, 11-4 AMC N) has into first place in the American Mideast Conference North Division race by taking three games from Notre Dame College this past week.  The Cavs lead Malone College (10-4) by one-half.   This week, the Cavs finish their weekend series with Notre Dame on Monday.  The game has been moved to Walsh because of field conditions.  The Cavs will be the visitor in the single game.  On Thursday, they travel to Seton Hill University for an conference doubleheader and on Saturday host Seton Hill.  Both doubleheaders start at 1 pm.

Mount Vernon Nazarene University scored 26 runs in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the Cavs last Tuesday.  The sweep snapped the Cavs four-game winning streak.  The Cougars took the opener 9-8 in 9 innings and won the nightcap 17-7.  Andrew Tighe (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) was the losing pitcher in the first game.  Andy Scritchfield (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) had three hits and drove in a run, Chad Campbell (So., Ashtabula, OH/Lakeside) had three singles and a double, and Duane Kaley (Sr., Deerfield, OH/Southeast) had two hits and two RBI.  Andy Schon (Jr., Akron, OH/Coventry) was the starter and loser in the second game.  The Cougars banged out 17 hits in game two.  Jason Pettigrew (So., Massillon, OH/Jackson) doubled and drove in two runs for the Cavs.  .

Walsh improved to 10-4 in the North Division of the AMC, with a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame College on Saturday.  The Cavs won game one 3-1 and game two 9-2, to improve to 15-17 overall.  Kyle Lynn (Jr., Massillon, OH/Tuslaw) tossed a complete game five-hitter in the opener.  Lynn fanned five and did not walk a batter in improving to 4-3.  Pat Conley (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) doubled and hit a solo homer and Ben Botbyl (Sr., Willard, OH/HS) also hit a solo homer.  Chris Norris (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) started the nightcap and pitched a seven-hit complete game, to stay unbeaten at 5-0.  Jason Pettigrew doubled twice and drove in three runs and Andy Scritchfield had three hits and three RBI.

The Cavs and Notre Dame met again at Walsh on Sunday due to field conditions at Notre Dame.  In a game for the ages, Walsh outlasted Notre Dame College, 2-1 in 13 innings in the first game. Game two was rescheduled for Monday, due to length of game one.  If the game had been filmed, it would have qualified for ESPN's Classic rewind.  Walsh starting pitcher Andy Schon pitched ten innings and left with the game tied at 1-1.  Walsh pushed the winning run across in the top of the 13th inning, when Andy Scritchfield reached on an error and was sacrificed to second base by Chad Campbell, then moved to third on a wild pitch.  Pinch hitter John Zakel (Jr., Middleburg Heights, OH/Holy Name) was then walked and Greg Miller (Jr., Dover, OH/HS) drove in Scritchfield with a sacrifice fly to give Walsh a 2-1 lead.  Andrew Tighe, who came into the game in relief in the 11th, retired the Blue Falcons in the 13th to pick-up his first win (1-3) of the season.
