BASEBALL: Cavs (25-12, 12-4) Open Up Three Game Lead In AMC North Division/Lahna/Steiner AMC Player of the Week

Walsh (25-12, 12-4 AMC N) has opened up a three-game lead over second place Saint Vincent (7-6 AMC) in the North division of the American Mideast Conference.  The Cavs won three out of four AMC North games from Notre Dame College and took a pair of non-conference games last week.  This week, Walsh plays back-to-back conference games with Seton Hill College on Saturday and Sunday and plays non-league games with Mount Union College and Allegheny College.  

Walsh scored 15 runs and banged out 15 hits in a 15-2 win over Myers University at Gordon Park in Cleveland on Monday.  The Cavs used an eight-run third to put the game away.  Kyle Lynn (So., Massillon, OH/Tuslaw) worked the middle innings to pick-up the win in relief and is 5-2.  Andy Dudones (Sr., North Canton, OH/Springfield) had three singles and a double and to drive in two runs and Pat Conley (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) doubled and homered to drive in two runs. 

Chad Lahna (Sr., West Lafayette, OH/Ridgewood) and Pat Conley's back-to-back homeruns powered the Cavs to an 11-10 come from behind win against Mount Union College on Wednesday.  Lahna's two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning tied the game at 10 and Conley's solo homerun gave the Cavs the win.  Lahna, also the winning pitcher, collected five hits, as did Conley.  Walsh trailed 9-3 in the middle of the fourth inning, when the started their comeback.

Walsh split an American Mideast Conference double header at Notre Dame College on Friday. The Cavs dropped game one 7-3, but came back to win the second game 8-2.  Kyle Lynn (So., Massillon, OH/Tuslaw) took the loss in game one to fall to 5-3.  Andy Schon (So., Akron, OH/Coventry) was outstanding in the nightcap, fanning 13 in picking-up his first win of the season (1-3).  Chad Lahna singled, doubled and drove in a run and Chad Campbell (Fr., Ashtabula, OH/Lakeside) had two singles and a RBI. 

Walsh won both ends of an AMC North double header from Notre Dame College on Saturday.  The AMC North first place Cavs captured game one 13-1 and game two 8-3.  Walsh has won five of its last six games and took three out of four games from Notre Dame this weekend.  Andy Steiner (Sr., Green, OH/HS) pitched a complete game two-hitter in the opener, to improve his record to 7-1 on the season.  Ben Botbyl (Jr., Willard, OH/HS) smashed three doubles and drove in four runs and Pat Conley had three RBI.  Freshman Alan Frame (Fr., Atwater, OH/Waterloo) was the winner in game two and is now 4-2.  He had relief help from Wes Fenner (Jr., Shelby, OH/South Central), who worked the final three innings to earn the save.   Chad Lahna powered the Cavs attack with a double, triple, homer and five RBI. 

Walsh, winners of eight of their last ten games are hitting .300 as a team.  Chad Lahna leads the team in hitting (.363), home runs (6) and RBI (39).  He is currently on a five-game hit streak and has 10 multiple hit games and nine multiple RBI games.  This past week, he batted .545 with two doubles, a triple, three homers, and 12 RBI to earn the award for position players. He recorded 12 hits in 22 at bats with eight walks and 13 runs scored.  Lahna hit .750 in his last five games and posted a 1.136 slugging percentage for the week.  Lahna also has six saves and a 0.90 ERA as Walsh's closer.  Senior right-hander, Andy Steiner is 7-1. with three complete games and a 2.05 ERA.  This past week, Steiner was 2-0 and did not allow an earned run in 10 innings pitched covering appearances versus North Division foes Geneva and Notre Dame. He struck out seven and walked three while surrendering six hits total.  Right fielder Pat Conley has seven multiple RBI games and is batting .324 with five home runs and 28 RBI. 

MEN'S GOLF: Cavs (18-5) Sigler Fires 75/Team Places Fourth at UC/UD Invitational

Walsh (18-5) finished in fourth place, after shooting 312 last Tuesday in the final round of the University of Cincinnati/University of Dayton Invitational, held at the Golf Club at Yankee Trace in Dayton.  The Cavs had a two-day total of 626.   IUPUI finished first, shooting 604.  The University of Cincinnati finished second (606) and the University of Dayton third (611).  After shooting an opening round 77, Chris Sigler (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) fired a 75 in the final round to finish tied for fourth with a two-day today of 152.  David Brodie (So., Newton Stewart, Scotland/Douglas Ewart) finished tied for 10th, after shooting a second round 78 and finishing at 154.  David Rose (So., Marietta, OH/HS) shot 79 the final day and tied for 18th with a total of 159.  Alan Dattilio (So., Salem, OH/West Branch) tied for 22nd, after shooting 80 in the final round and finishing at 161 and Michael DiFabbio (Steubenville, OH/Central Catholic) shot 86 in the final round and placed 29th, with a two-day total of 171.

This Monday and Tuesday, the Cavs host play at Prestwick Country Club on Monday (10 am) and at Raintree Golf Course on Tuesday (8 am).

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs (44-10) Fifth at Ohio Cup

Walsh (44-10) finished fifth, in a field of eight teams, at the Ohio Cup played at Pine Hills Golf in Hinckley, Ohio.  Walsh finished with 17.5 points.  Malone College won the event with 32 points.  Points were determined in match play, best ball play, stroke play and alternating ball play. 

Christine Haver (So., Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) finished first in stroke play, with a 45, to give the Cavs four points.  Haver also picked-up two points in match play.  Andrea Ferriell (So., Hartville, OH/St. Thomas) also shot a 45 to give the Cavs 3.5 points.   Kelsey Saleet (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) and Meghan Snider (So., Massillon, OH/Jackson) finished sixth in alternating ball play to give the Cavs three points.  Meghan DiFrancesco (Fr., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Christina Trbovich (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) scored three points for the Cavs, by finishing sixth in the alternating best ball. 

SOFTBALL: Cavs (12-13, 1-5) Fall Twice in AMC Play

Walsh (12-13, 1-5 AMC S) lost both ends of an AMC double header with Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday and finished the busy week 3-5.   This week, the Cavs host Ursuline College on Monday, Notre Dame College on Wednesday, play at Seton Hill College on Thursday.  All are double headers.

Walsh's defense faltered, allowing five unearned runs in a double header loss to Gannon University.  The Cavs committed six errors in game one in a 3-1 loss and made three more miscues in game two in a 2-1 defeat.  Lindsey Bauer (Sr., Rootstown, OH/HS) started for the Cavs and took the loss in game one to fall to 2-6.  Jodie Cole (Fr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) tossed a two-hitter in the nightcap, but suffered the loss to fall to 5-2.  Kendra Shoup (Jr., Willard, OH/HS) was 5-6 in the two games, with three doubles, and Cole doubled and drove in Walsh's only run in game two. 

Despite scoring just one run and six hits in two games, Walsh split a non-conference double header with Geneva College (14-11).  The Cavs won the first game 1-0, but lost the nightcap 2-0.  Walsh scored the games only run in the fifth inning of the opener.   Megan Pisciotta (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Akron Saint Vincent-St. Mary) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing only hits, to improve to 3-1 on the season.  Geneva scored single runs in the first and third innings of game two and held the Cavs to just one-hit in their 2-0 win.  Jodie Cole tossed a three-hitter in defeat for the Cavs, to fall to 5-4.

Walsh swept a twinbill from Point Park College, 6-0 and 1-0.  Lindsey Bauer pitched a one-hitter in the 6-0 game one win.  Bauer fanned three and did not walk a batter to improve to 3-6.  Five Cavaliers had multiple hits, with Jaime Notch (So., Suffield, OH/Field/Cleveland St) driving in two runs and Kendra Shoup (Jr., Willard, OH/HS) driving in a run and scoring a run.  Megan Pisciotta and Jamie Cole combined on a two-hitter in Walsh's 1-0 win in game two.  Kelly Sasavicz (Massillon, OH/Washington/Wittenberg) drove in the winning run in the seventh inning. 

Walsh lost both ends of an American Mideast Conference South division double header to Mount Vernon Nazarene (8-13, 2-2) today.  The Cavs lost game one 4-2 and game two 6-2.  Walsh is now 12-13 overall and 1-5 in the AMC South.  Mount Vernon rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to steal game one 4-2.  Lindsey Bauer was again the victim of lack of offense in the opener.  Bauer is now 3-7, and has pitched much better her record indicates. Walsh scored two runs on six hits and took a 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Kelly Jackson (Fr., Akron, OH/Ellet) two-run double. Game two produced the same, two runs on six hits in the 6-2 loss.  Mount Vernon led 5-0, before the Cavs put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning.  Jamie Cole started, and took the loss to fall to 6-5.  Megan Pisciotta came on in third inning and pitched the rest of the way.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (9-5, 4-0) Win Two of Three Matches

Walsh (9-5, 4-0 AMC) won two of of three matches last week.  The Cavs opened the week with a 4-3 win over the College of Wooster, then blanked Seton Hill 9-0 in an American Mideast Conference match and completed the week with a tough 4-5 loss to Case Western Reserve University.  This week, the Cavs are at Wittenberg University on Monday, play an AMC contest at Cedarville University on Friday and host Tiffin, in another AMC match on Saturday.

Walsh defeated the College of Wooster 4-3 in a non-conference match at the D.J. Hard Tennis Courts in Wooster.  The win was the third straight for the Cavs.  Walsh won two of three doubles matches to take the first point of the match.  Chris Pleska (Sr., Wooster, OH/HS) and Stephen Webster (Fr., Lexington, OH/HS) won 8-5 at first doubles and Lanny Rubin (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) and Martin Echague (Jr., Buenos Aires, ARG/Ecclestoa) posted an 8-6 win at second doubles.  Rubin won 6-1, 6-3 at first singles and Webster won 6-0, 6-1 at second singles.  Chris Pleska, a former Wooster General in high school, won 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at number three singles to give the match to the Cavaliers.  

The Cavs had little trouble in blanking Seton Hill 9-0, to improve to 4-0 in the AMC.  Saturday was a different story, as they were bester 4-5 at Case Western Reserve University.  The Cavs came away with just one singles win, as Stephen Webster won at second singles.  The Cavs won all three doubles matches.  Webster and Chris Pleska are 13-1 at first doubles.  Lanny Rubin and Martin Echauge are 10-3 at second doubles.  Rubin is 10-3 first singles, Pleska is 8-5 at third singles and Echague is 6-5 at fourth singles.  Sean Smith (So., Edgewater, NJ/Bradenton Academy) is 6-5 at fifth singles and Greg Kerschbaum (Fr., Elyria, OH/HS) is 7-3 at sixth singles.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (5-9, 11) Snap Skid With Three Straight Wins

Walsh's (5-9, 1-1) snapped a six-match losing streak, with wins over the College of Wooster, Saint Vincent College and Shawnee State University.  The Shawnee State win evened the Cavs AMC record at 1-1.  This week, the Cavs are at Wittenberg University on Monday, host Malone College in an AMC match on Thursday and Tiffin University in another AMC match on Saturday.

Number one singles player, Kristen Cady (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak), won all three singles matches and is 10-4 on the season.  She has won four straight matches.  Kaylyn Moyer (Jr., Ravenna, OH/HS) lost two out of three matches and is 4-10 combined at second and third singles.  Megan Navarre (Fr., Indianapolis, IN/Centre Grove) won twice at second singles and is 2-1, with a combined singles mark of 5-8.  Dana Wobser (Sr., Sandusky, OH/HS) is 5-6, Katie Lance (Sr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) is 7-8,  Kelly Dehn (Fr., Powell, OH/Olentangy) is 3-4 and Nicole Hagy (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) is 4-5.  Ingrid Brainard (So., Madison, OH/HS) make her Walsh debut against Shawnee State and won at sixth singles. Cady and Lance are 4-2 at first doubles, with four straight wins.  Moyer and Wobser are 6-8 at second doubles and Dehn and Hagy are 2-2 at third doubles.  

MEN'S TRACK: Cavs Do Well at Mount Union Open

Walsh fared well at Mount Union College this past weekend.  Todd Fisher (Fr., Mansfield, OH/Shelby) took first place in the 400m dash in a time of 49.68.  Gary Robinson (Sr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) finished second in the long jump (21-.05) and third in the triple jump (41-11.00).  Robinson and Fisher were also part of Walsh's winning 4 x 400m relay team (3:23.20), along with Rob Lash (Fr., Shelby, OH/HS) and Steve Mackle (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS).  Lash also finished second in the 400m hurdles (56.28).  Pete Tsaftarides (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) was fourth in the shot put (45-10.50) and Alex McCallion (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak) was fifth in the 400m hurdles (57.32).

This week, the Cavs are at Malone on Tuesday and at Slippery Rock on Saturday.

WOMEN'S TRACK: Patton Proviosional Qualifier/Cavs Fare Well at Mount Union Open

Walsh performed well at Mount Union College this past weekend.  Meghan Patton (So., Parma, OH/Holy Name) finished first in the 400m hurdles (1:05.75) and is a national provisional qualifier.  The Cavs grabbed a pair of second place finishes in the 4 x 100 relay and 4 x 400 relay.  The 4 x 400 team won in a time of 4:09.40, with Casey Fischer (Fr., Aurora, OH/HS), Jessica LeGrair (So., Copley,OH/HS), Jessica Scheeser (Sr., Green, OH/HS) and Lindsey Walker (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak) comprising the squad.  Fischer, Legrair, Scheeser and Walker comprised the 4 x 100 team and finished first in a time of 51.11.  Scheeser was also fourth in the 100m h (16.63) and fourth in the 400m h (1:09.58).  Sheila Greller (Sr., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat) placed third in the shot put (11.0) and Sarah Richards (Jr., East Canton, OH/HS) was third in the discus (126-10). 

This week, the Cavs are at Malone on Tuesday and at Slippery Rock on Saturday.
