BASEBALL: Cavs (18-12, 12-5 AMC) Vault in Third Place in AMC
Walsh (18-12, 12-5 AMC) moved from fifth place in the American Mideast Conference to third place, with five AMC wins in six games last week. This week the Cavs play at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Thursday (1 pm) and are home to the Cougars on Saturday (1 pm). Both are AMC double headers. On Tuesday, the Cavs play a single game at home with Geneva College at 4 pm and play a single game at Baldwin-Wallace on Sunday (1 pm).
Walsh and Malone College split an AMC double header at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium last Tuesday. Walsh took game one 7-4, but fell 8-5 in the nightcap. Mike Muenster (Fr., Gates Mills, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) earned the win in relief in game one working the final two innings. Matt Marshall (Sr., New Boston, OH/Glenwood) had two hits and two RBI and Duston Walter (So., Malvern, OH/HS) had a hit and an RBI. Mark Kelly (So., Norton, OH/HS) also had two hits. Malone halted a Walsh rally in the seventh inning of game two to gain the split. Walsh loaded the bases with nobody out trailing 8-5 in the seventh, but a fly out and double play ended the ballgame. Alan Frame (Sr., Atwater, OH/Waterloo) suffered the loss to fall to 1-1. Jeff Nicholas (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) had three hits, and Ryan Indorf (Sr., Massillon, OH/Washington) had a single, triple and a stolen base. Mike Weibley (So., Mentor, OH/Lake Catholic) had two hits and an RBI.
Walsh beat the raindrops and the University of Rio Grande twice in an AMC double header at home on Friday. The Cavs won the opener 5-0 and the nightcap 10-4. Chris Norris (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) pitched a three-hit, complete game shutout in the opener to improve to 5-1. He fanned nine. Chad Campbell (Sr., Ashtabula, OH/Lakeside) had two hits and an RBI and Jason Pettigrew (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) had two singles and two RBI. Mike Dougherty (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley) fanned eight in game two and improved to 3-3 with a complete game win. Jeff Nicholas drove in five runs and hit a grand slam in the sixth inning. It was the second homer of year for Nicholas, who also singled and doubled. Tim Hromada (So., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) doubled and drove in a run, and Pettigrew doubled and drove in two runs.
Walsh took both ends of an AMC double header from Shawnee State on Saturday. The Cavs won game one 9-3, and then rallied to win the nightcap 7-6. Jason Pettigrew drove in seven runs in the opener with two homeruns. He hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run shot in the second. He was 4-4 for the day. Chad Campbell was 3-4 with two runs scored and Ryan Indorf (Sr., Massillon, OH/Washington) was 2-4 with an RBI. Eric Shimko (Fr., Canton, OH/McKinley) started and worked 4.2 innings to earn his first collegiate win. Steve Weirich (So., Minerva, OH/HS) worked the final 2.1 innings. Walsh rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the sweep. With two outs and nobody on base in their final at bat, Walsh received three straight walks to load the bases. Pinch runner Mike Davis (Fr., Bridgeport, WV/HS) then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, and Jacob Knight (Fr., Akron, OH/Springfield) scored on a Matt Marshall (Sr., New Boston, OH/Glenwood) single to center with the winning run. Jared Roberts (Fr., Berea, OH/St. Ignatius) was the winning pitcher in relief, working the final 1.1 innings.
First baseman Jason Pettigrew is leading the team in hitting (.392) and is second with 30 RBI. Ryan Indorf has a team-leading 33 RBI and is hitting .356. Indorf also leads the team with four homeruns and has hit safely in his last six games. Tim Hromada, who is on a five-game hit streak, is hitting .375 in 19 games. Hromada has shared catching duties with Duston Walter, who is hitting .326. Third baseman Mike Weibley is hitting .338. Lead-off hitter and left fielder, Mark Kelly, is hitting .333 and second baseman Mike Suliks is also hitting .333. Center fielder Matt Marshall is batting .316 and shortstop Chad Campbell is hitting .314. Eight of Walsh's nine regulars are hitting over .300, as the Cavs sport a team batting average of .329. Chris Norris, who pitched the shutout against Rio Grande, is 5-1 with a 3.61 ERA. Steve Weirich is 3-2 with a team-leading 2.45 ERA and Eric Shimko is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA.
SOFTBALL: Cavs (22-6, 12-0 AMC N) Win Six Straight, Remain Unbeaten in AMC North/Receive National Votes
Walsh won all six American Mideast Conference North Division games last week, to remain unbeaten at 12-0. The first place Cavs are 22-6 overall and received votes for the second straight week in the NAIA rankings. This week the Cavs are at Notre Dame College on Monday (3:30 pm) and at Point Park University on Friday (3:30 pm) and then host Point Park on Saturday (1 pm). All are AMC North double headers.
Walsh swept Carlow College on Tuesday night, winning game one 8-2 and game two 8-1. Dana Hartings (Sr., Chicksaw, OH/Marion Local), the AMC Pitcher of the Week, earned the win, fanning eight. Hartings also went 2-4 at the plate with two RBI, a double, and her sixth homerun of the year. Chelsea Saunders (So., Hinckley, OH/Highland) went two for two and Laura Schmidt (So., Canton, OH/Jackson) was 2-5 at the plate. Ashley Hoover (Fr., Louisville, OH/Alliance) hit her first homerun of the season. In game two, the Cavaliers defeated Carlow behind the pitching and hitting of Krystal Sherry (So., Brunswick, OH/Holy Name). Sherry recorded seven strikeouts and also went 3-4 at the plate, with a double and two RBI. Brittany Sostre (Fr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) hit two solo homeruns. Alyssa Knupp (Fr., Massillon, OH/Tuslaw) also hit her fourth homerun on the year.
Walsh picked up two more wins at Ursuline College on Wednesday. The Cavaliers won the first game 2-1 in the 11th inning on a game winning homerun by Krystal Sherry. Sherry went three for five at the plate with two RBI. Dana Hartings picked-up the win and also fanned eleven. Alyssa Knupp went 2-5 and Laura Schmidt (So., Canton, OH/Jackson) also had two hits in the extra innings win. In game two, Walsh defeated Ursuline 5-2 in six innings. Sherry picked up the win with four strikeouts and also went two for four at the plate with a homerun and a double. Ashley Hoover was 2-3 at the plate and Brittany Sostre (Fr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) was 1-3 with a double.
The Cavs closed the week with a home sweep of Carlow College on Saturday. Walsh swept the Celtics by scores of 11-5 and 14-8. Dana Hartings won her 13th game of the season in the opener and fanned career batter number 300. She is second on the all-time list. She was also 2-3 at the plate with two RBI. Chelsea Saunders was 4-4, Kelly Jackson (Sr., Akron, OH/Ellet) 2-3 with two RBI and Laura Schmidt homered and drove in two runs. Game two was a wild affair. Carlow scored five runs in the first inning, but watched as the Cavs put up six runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. After Carlow regained the lead with three runs in the second inning, Walsh tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Cavs took the lead for good with two runs in the third inning and then added a single run in the fourth and three runs in the sixth. Hartings came on in relief of Krystal Sherry in the third inning and picked-up her 14th win of the season. She also hit a solo homerun, her seventh of the season. Sherry was 3-3 with a triple and two RBI and Kelly Jackson was 2-3 with two doubles and two RBI. Ashley Hoover was 3-4 with a double, and Shannon Spellacy was 2-3.
Dana Hartings is second on the all-time strikeout list with 309. Karen Heimgartner is the all-time leader with 612. Hartings is 14-2 with a 1.76 ERA and has completed all of her 14 starts. At the plate, she is hitting .422 with a team leading seven homeruns and is on an 11-game hit streak. She is second with 33 RBI. Krystal Sherry is hitting a team-leading .464, with a five homeruns and a team best nine doubles, five triples and 37 RBI. Walsh has clubbed 24 homeruns on the season. Shortstop Laura Schmidt is hitting .402 with three homeruns and 19 RBI. Outfielder, Chelsea Saunders is batting .396 and outfielder Alyssa Knupp is hitting .390.
MEN'S GOLF: Cavs 7th at Cougar Classic/Host on Monday
Walsh (14-21) finished seventh at the 36-hole Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougar Classic, held at Apple Valley Golf Course on Friday and Saturday. The Cavs two-day total of 637 (310=327), left them 28 strokes behind champion Cedarville University (299-300=599). This week, the Cavs host the Walsh Invitational at Prestwick CC on Monday, and play at Malone College (Tannenhauf GC) on Friday and Saturday.
Sam Troyer (Jr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) paced the Cavs at Mount Vernon Nazarene with a 16th place finish (72-83=156). Mike Lenartowicz (Sr., Canton, OH/Perry) placed 26th (78-80=158), Kevin Tournoux (Sr., Lakewood, OH/HS) 28th (75-85=160), Jessie Green (Jr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) 36th (85-79=164) and Nick Gallo (Jr., Wickliffe, OH/HS) 48th (89-89=178). Walsh's "B" team also competed. Brant Harbert (So., Uniontown, OH/Green) placed 40th (87-82=169), Ethan Williams (Fr., Quaker City, OH/Buckeye Trail) 44th (90-85=175), Chris Evans (Jr., Toronto, ONT/Notre Dame Catholic) 46th (90-86=176) and Dominic Reolfi (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) 52nd (88-96=184).
WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs Second at Mount Union Invitational
Walsh (13-23) finished second at Mount Union College last week, but was unable to finish at the University of St. Francis due to the weather on Saturday. This week, the Cavs are at the Wittenberg University Invitational on Tuesday.
The Walsh women (13-23) placed second out of five teams at the Mount Union College Spring Invitational. Tammy Schumacher (Sr., Whitney Point, NY/HS) once again paced the Cavs, shooting an 83, good for third overall and all tournament team honors. Kaley Foster (Jr., Manchester, OH/HS) was second for the Cavaliers, shooting a 90. Melanie Stone (Fr., Akron, Firestone) posted a career best 94, followed by Kaitlin Sesock (So., Uniontown, OH/Lake) with a score of 101.
Walsh completed just one round (18 holes) at the University of St. Francis due to inclement weather. Five of the 12 teams at St. Francis were unable to finish. Tammy Schumacher led Walsh with an 85. Kaley Foster and Kaitlin Sesock shot 105 and Melanie Stone 112.
MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs Take 2 of 3 AMC Matches
Walsh (7-7, 2-1 AMC) won two out of three American Mideast Conference matches last week. The Cavs fell to Malone College (3-6), but bounced back to defeat Cedarville University (5-4) and Roberts Wesleyan (9-0). This week the Cavs host Ohio Dominican University on Wednesday (3 pm) and play at Notre Dame College on Friday (3 pm). Both are AMC matches.
Number one singles Stephen Webster (Sr., Lexington, OH/HS) is 13-5 on the season and has won seven of his last eight matches. He is 13-2 at number one doubles with Gary Innes (Fr., Randburg, South Africa). Innes is 11-7 at third singles. Greg Kerschbaum (Sr., Elyria, OH/HS) is 9-9 at second singles and 11-4 at second doubles with Jake Allmaras (Fr., Powell, OH/Olentangy).
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs Win Three Straight
Walsh won all three matches last week to improve to 6-9 overall and to 4-1 in the American Mideast Conference. The Cavs defeated the University of Northwestern Ohio 8-1, Carlow College 9-0 and Roberts Wesleyan 8-1. This week the Cavs host Shawnee State on Monday (Hall of Fame) and play at Ursuline College on Thursday (11:30 am) and home to Cedarville University on Saturday (12 pm).
Jenamarie Ianni (Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) split two matches at first singles and is 6-7. Megan Navarre (Sr., Indianapolis, IN/Center Grove) is 5-6 at second and third singles. Lindsey Cady (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) is 5-8 at second and third singles. Jen Yost (So., Massillon, OH/Jackson) is 5-7 at mostly fourth singles and Hilary Rossi (So., Warren, OH/John F. Kennedy) is 6-6 at five and six singles. Madeline Lewis (So., Columbus, OH/St. Frances DeSales) is 4-4 mostly at fifth singles. Ianni and Cady are 3-3 at first doubles. Lewis and Navarre are 4-3 at mostly second singles.
MEN'S TRACK: Cavs First Home Meet a Success
Walsh finished a strong second at the first-ever Walsh University Invitational, held on Walsh's brand new track on Saturday. Walsh finished with 228 points, behind Malone College, who won the event with 283 points. This Saturday, the Cavs compete in the AMC Championships at Malone College.
Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) won the 5000m (15:44.67) and Andrew Saris (Jr., Smithville, OH/HS) took first in the triple jump (40'10"). Kevin Beichler (Fr., Smithville, OH/HS) placed second in the 100m (11.43), Chris Weirtz (Fr., Hudson, OH/Western Reserve) in the 400m (50.93), Brendan McKee (Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) in the 800m (2:00.60) and Saul Varga (Sr., Medina, OH/Highland) in the 400m hurdles (56.60).
WOMEN'S TRACK: Cavs Strong Second in First Meet on New Track
Walsh finished a strong second place in the first-ever Walsh University Invitational, held on Walsh's brand new track this afternoon. Walsh totaled 259 points, just seven points behind Malone College (266). Ursuline College finished third (189). This Saturday, the Cavs compete in the AMC Championships at Malone College.
Brenna Kirkbride (Jr., Atwater, OH/Waterloo) was a dual winner, placing first in the 100m (13.09) and the 200m (26.55). Megan Case (Fr., Louisville, OH/HS) won the 800m (2:23.60) and was a member of Walsh's 4x400m team which took first place (4:25.13), along with Kristen Havens (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS), Denise Sahli (So., East Canton, OH/HS) and Chantelle Richards (Fr., Akron, OH/East). Danielle Cofojohn (So., Diamond, OH/Southeast) won the shot put (39'1.5"), and Andrea DiNinno (Jr., Greensburg, PA/Central Catholic) the 5000m (19:18.99).
Katelyn Paul (So., Garrettsville, OH/Garfield) was second (1:11.40) in the 400m hurdles and Abbie Sullivan (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) was third (1:12.45). Casey Fischer (Jr., Aurora, OH/HS) finished second (13.35) in the 100m.
FOOTBALL: Offense Shines in Scrimmage
Walsh's offense shined despite a driving rain, defeating the defense 53-29 in the final scrimmage of the spring today. Quarterback Marc Pullen (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) completed 8-15 passes for 214 yards, which included a touchdown pass to John Rutan (So., Hartville, OH/Lake). Clinton Blossomgame (R-Fr., Columbus, OH/Beechcroft) and Rashid Shariff (Fr., Cleveland, OH/Collinwood) also had rushing touchdowns. Mike Welce (Fr., Columbiana, OH/HS) picked off two passes for the defense and Eric Buchanan (Fr., Green Cove Springs, FL/Clay) kicked field goals of 31 and 45 yards.
Walsh opens the season at Trinity International on August 31.
