BASEBALL: Cavs (17-20, 9-3) Second in AMC North

Walsh won three of out four games American Mideast Conference North Division games last week, and stand 9-3 in the conference heading into this week.  The Cavs, 17-20 overall, play seven non-league games this week.  Walsh plays a single game at Mount Union on Thursday, and then play at Myers University on Friday and home to Myers on Saturday.  Both are double headers.  Walsh then plays two games at home with Urbana on Sunday.  John Carroll postponed a trip to Walsh on Wednesday due to a conference make-up.

Walsh split four games with Seton Hill University last week.  Kyle Lynn (Sr., Massillon, OH/Tuslaw) returned to action, and picked-up the win on Monday.  Lynn suffered multiple injuries in March after being hit by a ball in practice.  He pitched 5.2 innings and allowed only one run on four hits in Walsh's 5-2 win.  Andy Schon (Sr., Coventry, OH/HS) pitched a complete game victory in the first game of a twin bill against Seton Hill on Tuesday.  Schon was backed by a seven-run fourth inning in the 9-3 win.  He tossed a six-hitter and fanned six.  Designated hitter Rollin Matsui (Sr., Thornhill, ONT/Westmount) hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and second baseman Mike Suliks (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) was 3-3 with two RBI. 

Walsh won three out of four AMC North games with Point Park on Friday and Saturday.  Walsh routed the Pioneers 14-2 in five innings in game one on Friday at home.  The Cavs scored five runs in the first inning and seven in the third.  Shortstop Chad Campbell (Jr., Ashtabula, OH/Lakeside) was 4-4 with a double and first baseman Jason Pettigrew (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) was 3-3 with two doubles and three RBI.  Suliks homered and drove in four runs.  Mike Dougherty (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) started for the Cavs and picked-up the win and is 5-3.  Campbell saved both ends of the double header at Point Park on Saturday.  Schon (5-3) started and went 6.0 innings to earn the win, with Campbell working the seventh.  Campbell also drove two of Walsh's runs in the 6- 3 win.  Chris Norris (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) went six innings and earned the win in game two.  Norris is 4-3 on the year.  Campbell worked the seventh to earn his fourth save.

Rollin Matsui is hitting a team-leading .404.  Matsui has two home runs, 15 RBI, and a team-best .544 slugging percentage.  Jason Pettigrew leads the team with 21 RBI and five doubles, and is hitting .314.  Dougherty and relief pitcher Andrew Tighe (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) have posted the lowest ERA on the team at 3.38.  Schon is next at 3.45.  He also leads the team with 52 strikeouts.

SOFTBALL: Cavs (19-20, 5-3 AMC S) Third in AMC

Walsh (19-20, 5-3 AMC S) won five out of six games last week, including an American Mideast Conference South double header against Cedarville University.  The Cavs are in third place in the South, with three AMC twin bills this week.  The Cavs are home to Malone College on Tuesday (3 pm), at Shawnee State on Thursday (3 pm), in a make-up from last Saturday, and home to the University of Rio Grande on Saturday (1 pm).  The Cavs play a non-league twin bill at Geneva College on Wednesday (3 pm).

Krystal Sherry (Fr., Brunswick, OH/Holy Name) won three times for the Cavs last week.  Sherry pitched a three-hit shutout, with six strikeouts, in a 3-0 win against Ohio Valley.  She then pitched a four-hitter in Walsh's 3-1 over Seton Hill and closed the week with an AMC win over Cedarville University (9-3).  She is 8-5 on the season. 

Megan Pisciotta (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) won twice, with a shutout win over Seton Hill and an AMC win over Cedarville.  Pisciotta tossed a four-hit shutout in an 8-0 win over Seton Hill, and then won 9-2 over Cedarville.  Jodi Stanley (Fr., Windham, OH/HS) was 5-6 with two RBI in the Cedarville twin bill, while Laura Schmidt (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) was 4-7 with four RBI.  Jessica Hudnall (Fr., Akron, OH/Ellet) was 2-3 with three RBI in game two against the Yellow Jackets.

Krystal Sherry leads the Cavs with a .341 average, and with ten doubles and 21 RBI.  She is also leading the pitching staff with an 8-5 mark and 1.65 ERA.  Jamie Notch (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) is hitting .338, and has four homeruns and 18 RBI.  Laura Schmidt is tied for the homerun lead with Notch, and is hitting .325 with eight doubles and 17 RBI.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (12-3, 5-0) on verge of Clinching AMC

Walsh (12-3, 5-0 AMC) defeated rival Malone College (9-0) and Cedarville University (8-1) last week and can clinch the American Mideast Conference regular season championship with a win at Ohio Dominican University.  The Cavs meet the Panthers in Columbus at 1 pm on Monday (4/16).  The Cavs have won ten straight AMC crowns.  The Cavs also play at Myers University in a non-conference match on Wednesday (3 pm).

The Cavs one-two punch of Stephen Webster (Jr., Lexington, OH/HS) and Dexter Mahase (Jr., La-Romaine, Trinidad) continue to play well.  They are a combined 23-7 at first and second singles.  Webster is 11-4 playing mainly first singles, while Mahase is 12-3, playing mostly at number two. The two make up the Cavs top doubles team, and are 10-4.  Sean Smith (Sr., Edgewater, NY/Bradenton Academy) is 12-3 at third singles.  Freshman Justin Collins (Lexington, OH/HS) is 9-5 at mostly fourth singles, and Greg Kerschbaum (Jr., Elyria, OH/HS) is 11-4 at mostly fifth singles. Andy Coutts (Sr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) is 9-6 at sixth singles.  Smith and Collins are 8-1 at second doubles and Kerschbaum and Nick Grahame (Sr., Louisville, OH/ST. Thomas Aquinas) are 7-2 at third doubles.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (11-4, 6-0) Continue to Win, Tied for AMC Lead 

Walsh's (11-4, 6-0 AMC) had its eight-match winning streak snapped at West Liberty State last week, before they rebounded to win three American Mideast Conference matches.  The Cavs are still undefeated in the AMC, after defeating Tiffin University (5-4), Ursuline College (9-0), and Shawnee State University (9-0).  The Cavs host Malone College in an AMC match on Tuesday (3 pm), play at Geneva College on Thursday (3 pm) and play at Cedarville University on Friday (12 :30 pm).   

The Cavs top six have been consistent all season.  Number one singles player Kristen Cady (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) is 8-7 on the season, after losing three out of four matches last week.  Jenamarie Ianni (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) is 9-6 at second singles.  The duo is 10-5 at first doubles. Lindsey Cady (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak) is 8-7 at third singles, Ingrid Brainard (Sr., Madison, OH/HS) is 11-3 at fourth singles, and is 9-2 with Lindsey Cady at third doubles.  Megan Navarre (Jr., Indianapolis, IN/Center Grove) is 9-4 at fifth singles, Hilary Rossi (Fr., Warren, OH/JFK) is 9-5 at mostly sixth singles.  Rossi and Jen Yost (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) are 6-4 at third doubles.

MEN'S GOLF: Cavs (8-7) at Malone on Friday and Saturday

Walsh (8-7) finished second at the Walsh Invitational last week.  The event was cut to one day due to the weather.  Walsh then finished sixth at Mount Vernon Nazarene last Friday and Saturday.  This Friday (11 am) and Saturday (9 am) they play in the Malone Invitational at Tannenhauf CC.

Walsh shot a 317 and finished 13 strokes behind Malone College (317) last Tuesday.  David Rose (Sr., Marietta, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with a 77.  Kevin Tournoux (Jr., Lakewood, OH/HS) and Mike Lenartowicz (Jr., Canton, OH/Perry) each shot 78.  Mike DiFabbio (Sr., Steubenville, OH/Central Catholic) shot 84 and Chad Coombes (Sr., Medina, OH/Buckeye) 84.  Sam Troyer (So., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) paced Walsh's B Team with a 78.  Alan Dattilio (Sr., Salem, OH/West Branch) fired an 81.  Jesse Green (So., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) 87, Pat Moro (So., Warren, OH/JFK) 92 and David Russell (Sr., Glasgow, Scotland/Cumbernauld) 94.  On the Cavs' C Team. Justin Lenox (So., Canton, OH/Perry) led with an 87.  Chris Evans (So., Brampton, ONT/Notre Dame) shot 90, Nick Gallo (So, Wickliffe, OH/HS) 91, Tom Eich (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) 95 and Dominic Reolfo (Fr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) 96.

The Cavs were sixth at the 36-hole Mount Vernon Nazarene Invitational, held at Apple Valley Golf Course last weekend.  Walsh shot 317 each round and finished with a two-day total of 634.  Cedarville University won the event with a 610.  David Rose and Chad Coombes each shot 156.  Rose shot 74-82 and Coombes 84-72.  Mike DiFabbio finished with a 159 (80-79), Mike Lenartowicz 171 (87-84), Mike DiFabbio 159 (80-79), and Kevin Tournoux 164 (79-85).   

MEN'S TRACK: McKee Wins 1500m at Slippery Rock

Brendan McKee (So., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Wary) won the 1500m (4:03.08) and was third in the 5000m (16:01.53) at the Slippery Rock Invitational last Saturday. 

Both the men and women are at the AMC Championships this Friday and Saturday at Cedarville University.
