BASEBALL: Cavs (22-24, 15-9 AMC N) Win Four of Six/Close Regular Season This Week

Walsh (22-24, 15-9 AMC N) matched its American Mideast Conference North Division championship record of 2005 by winning three of four conference games last week.  But, Walsh stands third in the conference, behind Malone College and Seton Hill.  The Cavs close the regular season this week against Myers University and Ohio Dominican University.  Walsh meets Myers in Cleveland for twinbill on Friday (1 pm), then plays a split doubleheader, at home, against Myers (10 am) and Ohio Dominican on Saturday (4 pm).  The Cavs then host Ohio Dominican on Sunday (1 pm) in a doubleheader to close the regular season.

Walsh split a non-conference doubleheader at John Carroll University on Wednesday. Walsh won the first game 7-3, but lost the nightcap 4-3.  Alan Frame (So., Atwater, OH/Waterloo) pitched a complete game four-hitter in the opener.  Frame fanned six in improving to 2-4.  Ben Botbyl (Sr., Willard, OH/HS) went 2-4 with a double and RBI and Jeff Nicholas (So., Navarre, OH/Perry) was 2-4, with a double and RBI.  John Carroll scored three runs in the first inning.  Walsh tied the game three runs in the second inning and took the lead with a single run in the fifth.  The Cavs then added three runs in the sixth inning.  Walsh scored three runs in the first inning of game two, but could not hold on.  John Carroll scored single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth inning.  Mike Dougherty (Fr., Canton, OH/McKinley) took the loss in relief for the Cavs.   Jason Pettigrew (So., Massillon, OH/Jackson) was 2-3 with an RBI.  Walsh swept an AMC South doubleheader from Point Park College on Friday, 10-0 (6) and 5-2.  Kyle Lynn (Jr., Massillon, OH/Tuslaw) improved to 5-4, with a two-hit complete game in the opener.  Lynn fanned seven and did not walk a batter.  Greg Miller (Jr., Dover, OH/HS) got the Cavs going with a bases loaded double in the first inning to drive in three runs.  Jeff Nicholas had three hits and two RBI and Jason Pettigrew had three hits and a RBI.  Chris Norris (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) pitched a three-hitter in the nightcap to improve to 6-1.  Norris scattered three hits and fanned five in the complete game win.  Duane Kaley (Sr., Deerfield, OH/Southeast) and two hits and two RBI and Pat Conley (Jr. Tallmadge, OH/HS) had two hits.  Walsh split an AMC South doubleheader at Point Park College on Saturday.  The Cavs dropped the opener 8-2, but came back to win the nightcap 7-2.  Andy Schon (Jr., Akron, OH/Coventry) started and took the loss in game one to fall to 4-4. Chad Campbell (So., Ashtabula, OH/Lakeside) had a sacrifice fly and two RBI.  Ed Bartolec (Sr., Poland, OH/Cardinal Mooney) pitched a complete game, four-hitter, in the nightcap to improve to 3-3.  Duane Kaley (Sr., Deerfield, OH/Southeast) and two RBI and Ben Botbyl (Sr., Willard, OH/HS) doubled in two runs.

GOLF: Cavs (29-6-1) Rally from 10 Strokes Back to Win at Cedarville/Finish 5th at Malone

Walsh (29-6-1) rallied from ten strokes back, after the first day, to capture the Cedarville University Invitational by seven strokes over second place Ohio Dominican University (624).  The Cavs shot a second round 298, to finish with a two-day 36-hole total of 617.   Chris Sigler (Sr., Wooster, OH/Triway) was named to the All-Tournament Team after shooting 154 (79-75=154).  Kevin Tournoux (So., Lakewood, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with a final round 72.

Walsh's "B" captured the five-team Notre Dame College Invitational on Wednesday.  The Cavs won the event on the tournament tie-breaker.  Walsh finished tied with Tiffin University at 319, but had the best scores on the back nine, with their top four players to earn the win.   Chad Coombes (Jr., Medina, OH/Buckeye) and Sam Troyer (Fr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) each shot 77 to finish tied for third place.

Walsh finished fifth at the nine-team Malone Invitational.  After an opening round 310, the Cavs shot 293 on the final day to finish at 310.  Malone College won with a 577. David Rose (Jr., Marietta, OH/HS) led the Cavs "A" team with a 144 (72-72) and finished sixth.  Sam Troyer (Fr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) paced the "B" team with a 152 (76-76) and Jesse Green (Fr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) shot 154 (74-80) as an individual. The Cavs "B" Team finished 10th.  

Walsh will be at the American Mideast Conference/Region IX Championships, beginning Thursday at the Apple Valley Golf Course in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. The 72-hole tournament concludes on Saturday.

SOFTBALL: Cavs (14-22, 5-8) Drop 3-4, Playoffs Doubtful

Walsh (14-22, 5-8 AMC S) lost three out of four American Mideast Conference South Division games last week and are now a long shot to make the playoffs.  The Cavs need help from Ohio Dominican, who plays Cedarville University on Tuesday.  Walsh needs ODU to sweep Cedarville.  Walsh then would have to travel to Cedarville to complete a suspended game from March 29. The game was tied 2-2 in the eighth inning, when darkness halted play.  Walsh would then have to beat Cedarville to make the AMC Playoffs.

Walsh was blanked twice at Malone College on Tuesday, 3-0 and 2-0 in an AMC South doubleheader.  The Cavs could muster only two hits in game one and four in the night cap.   Dana Hartings (So., Chickasaw, OH/Marion Local) lost the opener to fall to 9-11.  Megan Pisciotta (So., Uniontown, OH/Akron Saint Vincent-St. Mary) took a no-hitter into the 6th inning of the second game, when Malone scored twice on six hits.  Pisciotta fell now 4-8. 

Walsh and Shawnee State University (25-8, 9-1) split an AMC South Division doubleheader at Walsh on Saturday.  Shawnee blanked the Cavs 4-0 in game one, with Walsh battling back to win the nightcap 6-4, handing the Bears their first AMC loss.   Dana Hartings lost the opener to fall to 9-12. Nicole Offenbecher (Fr., Massillon, OH/Washington) doubled and went 2-3 in game one.  Jamie Notch (Jr., Suffield, OH/Field) went 2-2, with a double and three RBI in game two.   Megan Pisciotta was the winning pitcher and improves to 5-8.  Offenbecher was also 2-2 in game two and Rebecca Adkison (Sr., Manchester, OH/Archbishop Hoban) was 3-4. 

MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (14-5, 8-0) Win AMC

Walsh (14-5, 8-0) captured another American Mideast Conference championship, after defeating Malone College (9-0) on Tuesday, Ohio Dominican University (6-3) on Thursday and Roberts Wesleyan University (7-2) on Saturday. The win against Roberts Wesleyan was the eighth straight for the Cavs, who are idle until May 3-5, when they play in the AMC/Region IX/X Tournament in Canton.  The Cavs have won ten conference championships in the last eleven years and have made nine straight NAIA National Championship appearances.

Number one singles player Stephen Webster (So., Lexington, OH/HS) is 13-6 on the season, and has won seven of his last eight matches.  Sean Smith (Jr., Edgewater, NY/Bradenton Academy) is 12-7 at second singles and has won six of his last seven matches.  Joe Grande (Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) is 9-6 at third singles, Greg Kerschbaum (So., Elyria, OH/HS) is 13-2 at fourth singles and has won 15 of his last 16 matches.   Andy Coutts (Jr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) is 7-3 at fifth singles and Nick Grahame (Jr., North Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) is 8-3 at sixth singles and 5-4 at fifth singles.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (10-6, 3-1) Face Cedarville

Walsh (11-5, 3-1) lost its only match last week, 3-6 to California (PA).  This week, the Cavs host Cedarville University on Friday at 3:30 pm.

Number one singles player, Kristen Cady (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) is 6-9 in the top position and 6-10 overall.  Freshman Jenamrie Ianni (North Canton, OH/Hoover) is 12-3 at second singles and 12-4 overall.  Cady and Ianni are 9-5 at number one doubles.  Lindsey Cady (Fr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) is 6-10 at third singles, Kaylyn Moyer (Sr., Ravenna, OH/HS) is 6-5 at fourth singles and Ingrid Brainard (Jr., Madison, OH/HS) is 11-0 at fifth singles and 12-2 overall.  Lindsey Cady and Brainard are 8-5 at second doubles.  Moyer and Lauren Akkerman (Fr., Ashland, OH/HS) are 7-3 at third doubles, while Akkerman is also 4-1 at sixth singles.  Megan Navarre (So., Indianapolis, IN/Center Grove) is 8-4 playing fourth, fifth and sixth singles, while Kelly Dehn (So. Powell, OH/Olentangy) is 3-3 in singles and 2-0 in doubles play.

MEN'S TRACK: Cavs 10th at AMC Meet/Groholy Qualifies for NAIA Nationals in 5k Race Walk

Walsh finished 10th at the American Mideast Conference championships, held at Cedarville University on Friday and Saturday.  Tiffin University won the event with 178 points.  Mike Groholy (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) qualified provisionally for nationals in the 5K race walk (31:14.58).  Earlier (4/15), he qualified for the 1/2 marathon (1:16.54).  Joel Dagenhardt (Sr., Marlington, OH/HS) finished third in the 3000m steeplechase (9:57.43) and Pete Tsaftarides (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley) fourth in the shot put (47.04.00).  Brandon McKee (Fr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) was fifth in the 3000m steeplechase (9:58.77) and Alex McCallion (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) was sixth in the 400m hurdles (56.08). 

WOMEN'S TRACK: Cavs Finish 7th at AMC Championships/Ebony Williams Wins High Jump

Walsh finished seventh (56 pts) at the American Mideast Conference Championships, held at Cedarville University. Malone College won the championships with 233 points. Ebony Williams (So., Akron, OH/Firestone) won the high jump (5-02.00) for the Cavs.

Sarah Richards (Sr., East Canton, OH/HS) finished second in the shot put (39-00.00) and fifth in the discus (114-02).   Lindsay Cooper (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic), Katie Wirtz (So., Lakewood, OH/HS), Meghan Patton (Jr., Parma, OH/Holy Name) and Tess Francis (Jr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) finished fourth in the 4x800m relay (10:06.07).  Patton also finished fourth in the 100m hurdles (16:06) and Jackie Misiak (Fr., North Ridgeville, OH/HS) finished fifth (16:06).
