BASEBALL: Cavs (28-17, 14-6 AMC N) Watch as Mother Nature Works
Walsh still leads the American Mideast Conference North by two games, and they still have four conference games to play. Walsh and Point Park College had all four AMC North games postponed last week. The Cavs are scheduled to host the Pioneers on Tuesday at 2 pm. The two schools have yet to set a date for the games in Pittsburgh.
The Cavs dropped their only game last week, falling 12-4 to John Carroll University in a non-conference single game. Pat Conley (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) extended his hitting streak to six games, with two hits.
Chad Lahna's (Sr., West Lafayette, OH/Ridgewood) outstanding year continues. Walsh's left fielder/closer leads the American Mideast Conference in walks (30) and saves (7) and is in the top five in RBI (47), runs scored (42) and home runs (6). Lahna is batting .349. Pitcher Andy Steiner (Sr., Green, OH/HS) is tied for the AMC lead in wins with seven. Steiner is 7-1 with a 2.87 ERA.
MEN'S GOLF: Cavs (39-12) Third at Rain Shortened Malone Invitational
Walsh (39-12 ) finished third at the rain shortened Malone College Invitational last Friday. Saturday's 18 holes were cancelled due to rain and snow. The Cavs finished with total of 304, eight strokes behind champion Malone (296).
The Cavs were paced by David Brodie (So., Newton Stewart, Scotland/Douglas Ewart) who shot a 74. Chris Sigler (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) was right behind Brodie with a 75. Kevin Tournoux (Fr., Lakewood, OH/HS) was next for the Cavs with a 77. David Rose (So., Marietta, OH/HS) shot 78 and Michael DiFabbio (Steubenville, OH/Central Catholic) 83. Alan Dattilio (So., Salem, OH/West Branch) scored 78 as an individual, as did Mike Lenartowicz (Fr., Canton, OH/Perry).
The Cavs are idle until next week, when they compete in the NAIA Region IX Championships in Howard, Ohio at Apple Valley Golf Course, May 4-6. The Cavs finished fourth last year.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs (44-14) 5th in Final Tune-up at Youngstown
NAIA No. 25 ranked Walsh (44-14) finished fifth at the 36-hole Youngstown State University Invitational last Sunday and Monday. Walsh are idle until they compete in the 11th Annual NAIA Championships, May 17-20 in South Bend, Indiana.
The Cavs finished with a two-day total of 707. Christine Haver (So., Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) paced the Cavs with a tie for 12th (87-81=168). Meghan Snider (So., Massillon, OH/Jackson) tied for 19th (85-89=174), Kelsey Saleet (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) finished 24th (95-86=181), Christina Trbovich (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) finished 25th (92-92=184) and Andrea Ferriell (So., Hartville, OH/St. Thomas) tied for 30th (98-93-191). Meghan DiFrancesco (Fr., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished 32 (95-99=194).
SOFTBALL: Cavs (20-17, 3-7 AMC S) Sweep Malone/Fall Twice at Urbana
Walsh (20-17, 3-7 AMC S) started the week with a doubleheader sweep of Malone College to improve their positioning for a post-season playoff run. But the run suffered a huge setback on Tuesday, when the Cavs were swept at Urbana. Walsh then split a non-conference doubleheader at Tiffin University and had their AMC twinbill postponed at Shawnee State. The Cavs are in sixth place, with four AMC games to play. The Cavs host Rio Grande on Saturday at 1 pm, while the games at Shawnee State will be played in Portsmouth on Friday at 3 pm.
Walsh defeated Malone 6-2 and 10-2. Lindsay Bauer (Sr., Rootstown, OH/HS) was the winning pitcher in game one to improve to 8-7. Jamie Cole (Fr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) was the winning pitcher in game two to improve to 8-5. Kelly Sasavicz (Massillon, OH/Washington/Wittenberg) and Kendra Shoup (Jr., Willard, OH/HS) each had two hits. Shoup also drove in two runs in game two, going 3-4 with two doubles. Cole helped herself in game two, going 2-3 with a triple. Annie Plouse (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) went 2-4 and Jessica Edmunds (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Green) 2-3. Rebecca Adkison (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Archbishop Hoban) and Kelly Jackson (Fr., Akron, OH/Ellet) each drove in two runs.
Urbana downed the Cavs the next day, 2-0 and 5-4. Jamie Cole tossed a four-hitter in defeat in game one. Urbana scored both runs in the first inning. In the nightcap, Urbana scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 5-4. Cole suffered the loss in relief and is 8-7. Kendra Shoup had three hits for the Cavs.
Walsh split a non-conference doubleheader, by identical 2-1 scores, at Tiffin University on Thursday. The Dragons took game one and the Cavs the nightcap. Tiffin snapped a 1-1 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning in game one. Lindsay Bauer surrendered two unearned runs in suffering the loss (8-8). She fanned six and scattered four hits. Megan Pisciotta (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Akron Saint Vincent-St. Mary) went the distance in game two to earn the win and even her record at 3-3. Kelly Jackson gave Walsh a 1-0 lead with a double in the first. After Tiffin tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning, Jessica Edmunds snapped the tie with a run scoring single in the fourth.
Kendra Shoup leads the Cavs in hitting (.374), hits (43) doubles (7) and slugging percentage (.435). Lindsay Bauer and Jodie Cole have both pitched extremely well. Bauer has won six of her last nine eight decisions. She has demonstrated pin-point control, walking only three batters in 106.1 innings. She leads the team with a 1.25 ERA. Cole, who also has eight wins, has a 1.82 ERA.
MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (14-5, 8-0) Claim AMC Title/Top Seed For Region IX Tournament at Cedarville
Walsh has re-captured the American Mideast Conference title, after completing the regular season 8-0 in conference play. The Cavs have won nine of the last ten regular season conference titles. Walsh enters the NAIA Region IX tournament as the top seed and on five-match win streak. The Cavs are the defending NAIA Region IX champions and have won seventh straight region championships. Walsh is scheduled to play on Thursday, against an opponent yet to be determined. The tournament is being held at Cedarville University and will conclude on Saturday.
The Cavs topped Malone College and Roberts Wesleyan 9-0 each last week. In fact, the Cavs have won their last three matches by 9-0 scores.
Top singles player, Lanny Rubin (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic), is 14-4. Stephen Webster (Fr., Lexington, OH/HS) 14-4 at second singles and has won his last ten matches. Chris Pleska (Sr., Wooster, OH/HS) is 13-6 at third singles. Sean Smith (So., Edgewater, NJ/Bradenton Academy) is 7-1 at fourth singles and 13-6 overall. Martin Echague (Jr., Buenos Aires, ARG/Ecclestoa) is 4-2 at fifth singles and 10-7 overall. Greg Kerschbaum (Fr., Elyria, OH/HS) is 8-3 at sixth singles and Andy Coutts (So., New Philadelphhia, OH/HS) is 5-1 at sixth singles. The Cavs top doubles team, Pleska and Webster, have won 18 of 19 matches, with their only loss against Grand Valley State. Rubin and Echague are 14-4 at second doubles. Smith and Kerschbaum are 10-4 at third doubles.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (8-10, 4-1) Primed For NAIA Region IX Tournament
Walsh (8-10, 4-1) is primed and ready for the NAIA Region IX Tournament at Cedarville University, which begins on Wednesday. Walsh and Tiffin University willplay on Wednesday at 1 pm. The winner meets Seton Hill College on Thursday at 1 pm. Walsh defeated Tiffin 7-2 in the regular season. The Cavs and Seton Hill did not meet. Walsh has won six of its last seven matches and won their only match at Cedarville (7-2) last week.
Number one singles player, Kristen Cady (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak) is 14-4 and is is on an eight-match win streak. Megan Navarre (Fr., Indianapolis, IN/Centre Grove) is 2-5 at number two singles and is 5-12 overall. Kaylyn Moyer (Jr., Ravenna, OH/HS) is 4-3 at third singles and is 7-11 overall. Dana Wobser (Sr., Sandusky, OH/HS) is 7-7 at fourth singles and 8-7 overall. Katie Lance (Sr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) is 8-7 at fifth singles and 11-8 overall. Lance has won her last five matches. Ingrid Brainard (So., Madison, OH/HS) is 5-0 at number six singles. Kelly Dehn (Fr., Powell, OH/Olentangy) is 7-5 at fifth and sixth singles. Cady and Lance are 7-4 at first doubles. Moyer and Webster are 9-9 at second doubles. Dehn and Nicole Hagy (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) are 3-2 at third doubles and Dehn and Brainard are 2-1 at sixth doubles.
MEN'S TRACK: Cavs 7th at AMC Meet
Walsh finished seventh at the American Mideast Conference championships at Cedarville University last Friday and Saturday. Rain and snow hampered the championships both days. The Cavs did not have an individual place first or second in any event.
Pete Tsaftarides (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) was third in the shot put (47-00.00) and the Cavs 4 x 800m relay team, comprised of Matt Finneran (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS), Steve Mackle (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS), Adam Vincent (Jr., Garrettsville, OH/Garfield) and Chris Zundel (So., Madison, OH/HS), was also third (7:59.55). Nick Aukerman (Sr., East Canton, OH/HS) finished fourth in the steeplechase (10:19.94) and Gary Robinson (Sr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) was fourth in the long jump (21-09.00)
WOMEN'S TRACK: Cavs 7th at AMC Meet/Scheeser 2nd Team All-AMC
Walsh finished seventh at the American Mideast Conference championships, held at Cedarville University on Friday and Saturday. Rain and snow hampered the championships both days. Jessica Scheeser (Sr., Green, OH/HS) was named second team All-AMC, after her second place finish in the 400m hurdles (1.10.70).
Tess Francis (So., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) finished third in the 400m hurdles (1.10.70). Sheila Greller (Sr., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat) was third in the discus (124-06) and Amy Stermole (Fr., North Ridgeville, OH/HS) was fourth in the shot put (35-10.25).
