BASEBALL: Cavs (11-19, 5-11) Look to Rebound
After dropping five of six American Mideast Conference games last week, the Cavs look rebound this week. Walsh is home for six AMC games, beginning with a twin bill against Notre Dame College on Tuesday (1 pm). The Cavs then have double headers with Cedarville University on Friday and Saturday at 1 pm. Walsh is currently seventh in the AMC.
Good pitching stymied the Cavs twice against Malone University last Monday, as the Pioneers won both games by identical 2-0 scores. The losses spoiled fine outings from Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) and Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS).
Walsh bounced back on Thursday to split a twin bill with Mount Vernon Nazarene. Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) pitched a complete game six-hitter to notch his second win (2-2) of the season in the opener (2-1). The Cougars would win the nightcap 11-3 and then take back-to-back games (7-2, 10-4) from the Cavs on Saturday.
Walsh rallied on Sunday, to take a non-conference game from Mount Union College, winning 9-6. Tim Hromada (So., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) doubled home two runs and singled home another in the come-from-behind win. Walsh trailed 5-2 and 5-4 in the seventh when they erupted for four runs to take the lead. Lefty Eric Shimko (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) worked seven strong innings in relief to pick-up the win, allowing only an unearned run, while scattering four hits and fanning three.
Center fielder Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) leads the Cavs in hitting with .358 average and with 34 hits. Designated hitter Mark Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) is hitting .341 with 18 RBI. Right fielder Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) is hitting .333 with 16 RBI and catcher Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) leads the team with three homeruns and 19 RBI. In seven relief appearances, Eric Shimko leads the team with a 2.40 ERA. Steve Weirich (Jr., Minerva, OH/HSI is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA and Billy Gura is 2-2, with a 3.96 ERA.
SOFTBALL: Cavs (12-18, 4-0) Lead AMC
Walsh (12-18, 4-0) swept an American Mideast Conference double header from Cedarville University on Saturday to remain unbeaten and in first place in conference play. This week, the Cavs play four AMC double headers. They play at Malone University on Tuesday (3:30 pm) and at Ohio Dominican University on Wednesday (3 pm). On Friday and Saturday, they host Mount Vernon Nazarene (1 pm) and Notre Dame College (1 pm).
Walsh split a non-conference double header at Urbana last Tuesday. After losing game one 5-4, the Cavs bounced back to win the nightcap 7-6. Walsh erased a 3-1 Urbana lead with six runs in the seventh inning. Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) hit her third homerun of the season and Ashley Hoover (So., Alliance, OH/Louisville) drove in two runs. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) fanned six, and went the distance to pick-up the win and improve to 6-6.
Walsh then used the long ball to sweep Cedarville on Saturday. Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) and Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/Steele) led off game one with back-to-back homeruns, as the Cavs won 9-3. AMC Pitcher of the Week Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) pitched a complete game four-hitter, to improve to 5-9 on the season. Ford also doubled in two runs to help her own cause. Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) was 3-4 with a triple and three runs scored. In game two, the Cavs scored four runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings in a 13-5 win. Schmidt and Allen each hit two-run homers in the four-run third. Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) and Davidson each drove in two runs. Virgin fanned eight in going the distance to improve her record to 7-6.
Megan Allen has hit safely in 11 straight games and is batting .373. Second baseman Jessica Davidson has hit safely in ten straight games, and is hitting a team-leading .397. Davidson and Allen each have six doubles and 16 RBI. Catcher Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) leads the Cavs 22 RBI and is batting .338.
