FOOTBALL: Cavs Open at Home With West Liberty State
Walsh opens its 12th season on Saturday, at home (Fawcett Stadium), against West Liberty State University (1-0) at 11 am at Fawcett Stadium. Head Coach Jim Dennison (79-39,12th yr.) returns 65 letter winners and 11 starters from last season, when Walsh finished 8-3. Walsh is ranked 13th in the NAIA poll, 6th in the Victory Sports Network poll and 8th in the Hansen Gazette poll. Tickets for the game are available, free of charge, at the Giant Eagle in Washington Square, directly across the street from Walsh.  Magnet schedules will be given out to the first 1,000 fans on Saturday.  Walsh will honors its outstanding athletes from last season at halftime, including the top spring grade point averages from each sport, their championship teams, athletes of the year and Jim Dennison as Athletic Director of the Year.  The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network, on AM 900 WCER and on 640 WHLO, with the pre-game starting at 10:50 am.

This will be the second game for the Hilltoppers, they won at Seton Hill University 31-14 last Saturday.  The Toppers out gained the Griffins 477 to 229 in total offense.  Eddie Hills led West Liberty with 134 yards rushing and three touchdowns, one of which was a dazzling 84-yard run on the Hilltoppers first offensive play.  Walsh and West Liberty are meeting for the ninth time. Walsh leads the series 5-3, but lost the season opener 20-17 at West Liberty last season.  Walsh is 9-2 in season openers and 5-1 at home.

CROSS COUNTRY: Men, Women Open Season at Westminster
Walsh's men's and women's teams open the season on Saturday at the Fisher Invitational at Westminster College.  The men's race starts at 9:30 am and the women's at 10:15 am.  Veteran men's Head Coach Dan McCallion returns for his 29th year at Walsh, while women's coach Al Campbell begins his seventh season.  The men return 11 letter winners, including Brendan McKee (So., Akron, OH/St. V-St. Mary) and Chris Zundel (Sr., Madison, OH/HS), who participated at the NAIA Championships in '05.  The women return 15 letter winners, which includes top runners Andrea DiNinno (So., Harrison, PA/Greensburg CC) and Tess Francis (Sr., Waterloo, OH/Randolph).

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs Sixth at Tri-State Invitational
Walsh (7-5) finished sixth at the 13-team field Tri-State University Invitational on Saturday.  The Cavs finished with a 345 team score. The University of Indianapolis won the event (308) and Ball State University was second (310).

Tammy Schumacher (Jr., Whitney Point, NY/HS) paced the Cavs with an 82 and tied for 20th.   Kaley Foster (So., Manchester, OH/HS) shot 84 and finished 26th, Christine Haver (Jr., Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) fired an 88 (T-33), Andrea Ferriell (Sr., Hartville, OH/Louisville) shot 91 (T-47) and Christina Trbovich (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) shot 93 (T-55).  The Cavs are back in action on September 11 and 12, when they travel to Youngstown State University.

MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Fall in Opener at Siena Heights
Walsh (0-1) lost the season opener 3-1 at Siena Heights (MI) (2-0) on Sunday.  Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) scored the Cavs' lone goal at the 23-minute mark of the first half to tie the contest at 1-1.  Greg Keller (Jr., Napolean, OH/HS) assisted on the Inama goal.  Siena Heights snapped the tie five minutes later and scored an insurance goal in the final minute.  Walsh out-shot Siena 8-7.

The Cavs are at Seton Hill University this Saturday at 3 pm.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Open The Season Under the Lights With Roberts Wesleyan
Walsh opens the new season this Friday, under the lights, against Roberts Wesleyan University at 7 pm.  It will be the first regular season night game in soccer history.  The Cavs then host Houghton College on Saturday at 3 pm.  Walsh finished 11-6-2 overall last season and 5-2-1 in the American Mideast Conference South Division.  The Cavs return 17 letter winners and 10 starters from last season.

VOLLEYBALL: Cavs Win Malone Tourney/Herr MVP, Hernandez All-Tournament Team
Walsh (2-0) opened the season by winning the Malone College Tournament on Friday and Saturday.  This week, they play at the University of Findlay Tournament, meeting Glenville State at 10 am on Friday and Wayne State at 1 pm.  The Cavs then tangle with California (PA) on Saturday at 1 pm and Bellarmine University at 3 pm.

Walsh opened the season with a win over Indiana Wesleyan College in four games (30-26, 30-20, 32-34, 30-28) on Friday.  Jamie Herr (5-9, Sr., Attica, OH/Seneca East) and Megan McDonald (5-10, So., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) paced the Cavs with 19 and 18 kills respectively.  Herr also had 16 digs, as did Heather Hernandez (5-9, Jr., Oakdale, CA/HS).  Jillian Barry (5-5, Jr., Salem, OH/HS) dished out 54 assists and Danielle Evancho (5-11, Fr., Strongsville, OH/HS) added two blocks. 

Walsh then defeated Ursuline College (0-3) and Malone College (1-2) on Saturday to win the tournament.  The Cavs downed Ursuline 30-13, 30-19, 30-24 and Malone 30-24, 30-16 and 30-22.  Herr was named Tournament MVP and Erica Parker (6-0, So., Concord, OH/Mentor) was named to the All-Tournament Team.  McDonald paced the Cavs in the Ursuline match with 11 kills, Barry dished out 28 assists and Hernandez added 15 digs.  In the Malone match, Evancho led Walsh with 14 kills, Barry handed out 44 assists and Hernandez had 32 digs.
