"Cavs Upset by Northwood"

Fourth seeded Walsh University (OH) became the first seed to fall, when they were upset 66-59 by Northwood University (FL) in quarterfinals of the 17th annual NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball Championships. For Walsh, it marked the second straight year that they were eliminated in the quarterfinals.  Northwood, in just their second NAIA championship appearance, advances to the Elite 8 for the first time.

Walsh, the NAIA’s top three-point shooting team, never found the range, but led 30-28 at halftime, after erasing an eight-point (18-10) deficit.  Walsh would shoot only .296 (8-27) from the behind the arc.

Walsh appeared to take control in the second half, when they snapped a 36-36 tie with a 12-4 run, keyed by back-to-back three pointers from freshman Jeremy Shardo (6-3, Yorkshire, OH/versailles).  Walsh led 48-40 with 11:34 to play when the Seahawks came to life.

Northwood would hold Walsh without a basket for 6:46 and take a 56-49 lead on the strength of a 16-1 run. Marvin Owens’ three-pointer with 6:32 to play snapped a 49-49 tie and gave Northwood the lead for good at 52-49.

Walsh would rally and cut the lead to two points at 61-59 on basket by Eder Araujo (7-0, Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Odete de Freitas) with 1:03 play.  It appeared Walsh would catch a break when Seven Ezumba missed a open dunk, but Brad Haugabrook tapped the rebound back and was fouled with 40 seconds to play.  He stepped to the line and knocked down two foul shots to give Northwood a 63-59 lead.  Northwood’s Tim Clark would then rebound an Araujo miss to seal the win.

Northwood’s Seven Ezumba led all scorers with 20 points and 9 rebounds.  Owens added 17.  Eder Araujo led Walsh with 19 points and 8 rebounds.

Northwood improves to 27-7 and plays the winner of the Northwestern (Iowa)/Oklahoma Wesleyan game at 3 pm on Saturday.  Walsh finishes their season at 26-5.

Walsh held Urbana to .344 (11-32) from the field in the first half and led 35-23 at the break. Walsh and Malone College meet for the third time this season in the AMC Championship on Tuesday night. Walsh won 70-56 on November 29 at Malone and 81-76 at Walsh on February 7. The Cavs lead the all-time series 57-39. The two teams are no stranger to meeting three times in a single season, having done so 14 times, including four meetings in in 1984-85. This will also be their 14th playoff meeting, with Walsh holding a 10-3 advantage. But this is only their second meeting in a championship game. Walsh won the only other championship game between the crosstown rivals, 81-42, in 1997-98 in the then Mid-Ohio Conference. Walsh also won the last playoff battle, 76-64, in 2000-01.

Eder Araujo leads the Cavs in scoring (14.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg). Araujo is shooting .503 from the field and .707 from the foul line. Corey Jones is averaging 13.9 points and is shooting an AMC and NAIA leading .583 from three-point range. Jones was 11-15 (.733) from the behind the arc this past week and averaged 18.0 ppg. For the season he is shooting .540 from the field and .870 from the foul line. Brandon Weems is averaging 11.4 points and an AMC leading 6.2 assists. Josh Johnson is averaging 10.5 ppg and 5.1 rebounds. The Cavs head into the post season on three-game win streak and with wins in eight of their last nine games. This is the first time since the 1995-96 season that the Cavs have not lost back-to-back games. The Cavs reached the NAIA Final Four that season under the late Steve Loy. Walsh's 24-4 regular season mark is their finest under Head Coach Jeff Young and best since their 26-6 regular season record in 1995-96. The Cavs have lost only two regular season games at home the last two years (27-2).

It was a record breaking week for the NAIA No. 2 Cavs.  After suffering a tough loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Thursday night, Walsh (22-4, 10-21 AMC S) bounced back on Saturday and ran roughshod over the University of Rio Grande to secure a berth in the American Mideast Conference championship game on Tuesday, February 26, against the winner of the North Division.  With Saturday's win, the Cavs also became the first team in 53 years to win the conference championship four consecutive years.  Findlay College, now the University of Findlay, won Mid-Ohio Conference championships in 1951-52, 1952-53, 1953-54 and 1954-55.

Walsh leads Cedarville University and Mount Vernon by two games and hold tie breakers against both, thus earning the title game appearance.  Walsh also claimed a piece of the AMC South regular season crown, and can clinch the division outright with one win in their final two games.  The Cavs travel to Urbana University on Tuesday (7:30 pm) and host Wilberforce University on Saturday (4 pm).  Both games will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

After snow postponed the Cavs trip to Mount Vernon last Tuesday, the two teams waited until Thursday for their second meeting of the season.  After posting a win in the first meeting in January, it looked like the Cavs would sweep the season series when they vaulted to a 16-point first half lead (42-26), as Corey Jones (6-3, Sr., Avon Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) poured in 16 first half points.  But the Cougars would put on a furious rally in the final eight minutes of the game to come away with a 78-72 win.  The loss snapped Walsh's six-game winning streak and kept Mount Vernon's playoff hopes alive.

Walsh held a double-digit lead through the first 11 minutes of the second half, when the Cougars cut the lead to nine points at 58-49 with 9:11 to play.  The turning point in the game came with Walsh leading 66-61 with 5:20 to play, when Brandon Weems (5-10, Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) was called for an offensive foul on a drive to the basket.  Mount Vernon's Ben Falkenberg then scored on a three-point play on the next possession to trim the lead to 66-64 with 4:20 to play.  After a Walsh turnover on the next possession, Falkenberg nailed a three-ball to give the Cougars their first lead since 16-15, at 67-66, with 3:52 to play.   Walsh regained the lead for the final time at 67-66 on the next possession on a lay-up by Eder Araujo (7-0, Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Odete de Freitas).  Falkenberg then scored his seventh straight point as MVNU took the lead back at 68-67 with 3:30 to play.  Corey Jones then hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 69 with 2:23 to play.  After MVNU regained the lead at 71-69, Walsh's Josh Johnson (6-4, Jr., Warren, OH/Harding) hit two free throws to tie the game for the final time at 71 with 1:56 left.  Falkenberg then struck again with a three-ball to put MVNU up 74-71 with 1:34 to play.  Johnson then split a pair of free throws with 1:16 to play to pull Walsh to within two points at 74-72.  After a Connor Gregg miss, Walsh had a chance to take the lead with 42 seconds to play.  With the clocking running down, Josh Johnson's three-ball from the corner was blocked by Jadin Thomas with 16 seconds to play.  The Cougars then hit four free throws for the final margin.  Jones led the Cavs with 17 points.  Johnson added 15 points and Araujo 13.   The Cougars shot .600 in the second half, after shooting only .353 in the first half.  Walsh shot .571 in the first half, but only .348 in the second half.

Walsh shook off the effects of the loss at Mount Vernon with a record breaking performance at home against the University of Rio Grande on Saturday.  The Cavs set two other records in their 110-72 win over the Redmen.  First they dropped in a team-record 19 three-pointers, with Corey Jones draining a record nine from the behind the arc.  For Jones, he also tied a career high with 30 points, set earlier this season.  It was also their eighth straight win over the Redmen.  Walsh trailed 4-2 early in the game, when they went on a 13-0 run to take control.  Jones hit 5 three's in the first half, as the Cavs led 54-31 at halftime. Josh Johnson added 12 first half points and Eder Araujo 10.  Walsh then blitzed the Redmen for 56 second half points, in scoring 110 points for the third time this season.  Walsh held its largest lead at 106-64 with 1:59 to play. The Cavs shot .552 (37-67) from the field and .487 (19-39) from three-point.  Brandon Speck (6-0, So., Mansfield, OH/St. Peter's) came off the bench and hit 4 three's and finished with 17 points.  Johnson added 16 points and Araujo 15.

Walsh looks for revenge when they travel to Urbana University (5-21, 3-9 AMC S) on Tuesday.  Urbana handed Walsh their only home loss of the season, when they upset the Cavs 70-64 on January 22.  Urbana enters the games with three straight losses, including an 87-69 loss to Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday.  The Cavs lead the all-time series 48-30.  Wilberforce University (8-17, 2-10 AMC S) comes to Alumni Arena for the regular season finale on Saturday.  The Cavs beat the Bulldogs 55-48 at Wilberforce on January 29 and lead the all-time series 15-3 with 8 straight wins.  The Bulldogs have lost two straight and were bounced 101-71 at Cedarville on Saturday.  It's a three-game week for the Bulldogs, as they host Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday and play at rival Central State on Thursday before coming to Walsh on Saturday.

Eder Araujo leads the Cavs in scoring (14.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.9 rpg).  Corey Jones is averaging 13.5 points and is shooting an AMC and NAIA best .566 from three-point range.  Jones 13-20 (.650) from the behind the arc this past week and averaged 23.5 ppg.  He is also shooting .530 from the field and .870 from the foul line.  Brandon Weems is averaging 11.2 points and an AMC leading 6.2 assists.   Josh Johnson is averaging 10.8 ppg and 5.3 rebounds.

Both games will be aired live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.  Walsh is also assured of playing in the AMC North-South championship game, at Walsh, on Tuesday, February 28.  At this point, there is a strong possibility of a Walsh-Malone College rematch.

The Cavs also set two other records in the win over the Redmen.  First they dropped in a team-record 19 three-pointers, with Corey Jones (6-3, Sr., Avon Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) draining a record nine from the behind the arc.  For Jones, he also tied a career high with 30 points, set earlier this season.

Walsh's three-game week starts with Ohio Dominican University (13-9, 4-4 AMC S) at Alumni Arena on Tuesday night.  The Bears fell out of second place tie, after losing 82-80 to Cedarville University on Saturday.  Walsh won the first meeting in Columbus, 76-70, on January 8 and leads the all-time series 60-20.  The Cavs have posted wins in the last eight meetings.

Walsh and 23rd ranked Malone College (16-5, 4-1 AMC N) meet in the 44th Annual Mayor's Cup game at Alumni Arena on Thursday night (8 pm).  Walsh won the first meeting 70-56 at Malone's Osborne Hall on November 29 and lead the all-time series 56-39.  The Cavs also lead the Cup series 24-19, but were denied a chance to retire the Cup last year when Malone came away with a 79-72 upset win.  It takes three consecutive wins in the designated game to retire the Mayor's Cup.  Walsh last retired the Cup in 2004-05 and has done it four times, while the Pioneers have done it three times, the last time in 1980-81.  Malone, now a member of the AMC North, comes into the contest with wins in their last four games and in 11 of their last 12.  They defeated Notre Dame College 67-65 on Saturday night and are tied with Daemen College for first place in the North.

Walsh and Cedarville University (15-6, 5-3 AMC S) complete the home stand on Saturday.  The Cavs won the first meeting 77-55 at Cedarville on January 19 and lead the all-time series 37-36.  The Yellow Jackets, who play at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday, defeated Ohio Dominican 82-80 in Columbus last Saturday.

"Basket at Buzzer Lifts Wooster over Cavs"

(Wooster, OH) Brandon Johnson's 14-footer, as time expired, lifted the College of Wooster (5-2) over the NAIA third ranked Cavs (8-2) 89-88 at Timken Gymnasium in Wooster tonight.  The loss snapped the Cavs six-game winning streak, and gave the NCAA III 23rd ranked Scots their second win over Walsh in two years.

Johnson's game-winner came after Walsh's Josh Johnson (6-4, Jr., Warren, OH/Harding) scored a three-point play to give the Cavs a 88-87 lead with 4.8 seconds to play.  Johnson took a missed shot and scored on a lay-up down the left side of the lane.  He was fouled, and then made the pressure packed free throw to give the Cavs just their second lead of the half.

Wooster then elected not to call time, as Brandon Johnson took the in-bounds pass down the left side and then to middle, where he nailed the game-winner just inside the foul line.

The loss spoiled a splendid comeback effort from the Cavs, who trailed by as many as nine points (63-54) in the second half.  The game featured 11 ties and seven lead changes.

Walsh trailed 86-81, with just under a minute to play, when Brandon Weems (5-10, Jr., Akron, OH/Saint Vincent-Saint Mary) scored on lay-up to trim the lead to 86-83.  Josh Johnson then stole the in-bounds pass, and scored on a lay-up to pull the Cavs to within a point at 86-85.

Walsh would foul on the next possession, sending Wooster's Jason Cooper to line.  Cooper hit the first free throw, but missed the second (87-85), giving the Cavs a chance to tie or win the game.  Weems then penetrated and missed a shot, but Corey Jones (6-3, Sr., Avon Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) rebounded the miss in the lane, and passed to Johnson, who gave the Cavs the lead.

Both teams shot extremely well the entire game.  Wooster shot .554 (31-56) from the floor and were led by Cooper's 32 points.  He hit every shot down the stretch, connecting on 12-17 from the floor and 7-9 from three point.  The Scots were 13-24 from beyond the arc.  The Cavs matched the Scots effort, shooting .523 (34-65) from the field and 11-19 (.579) from three-point.  Joe Shardo (6-5, Jr., Yorkshire, OH/Versailles/Univ. MO-Rolla) was 5-5 from three-point and finished with 21 points.  Weems added 16 points, six assists and five rebounds.  Eder Araujo (7-0, Sr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Odete Maria de Freitas) tallied 14 points and seven rebounds, with Johnson and Jones each adding 11 points.  All five Walsh starters reached double figures.

The only noticeable difference came at the foul line.  The Cavs were perfect 9-9, while the Scots were 14-17.

Walsh now heads to the Hoop-n-Surf Classic in Hawaii, where they meet Westminster College on Wednesday at 3 pm and Eastern College on Thursday at 3 pm.
