"Bedard, Berry and Seaman Earn AMC South Post Season Honors"

Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr, Waterloo, OH/Atwater), Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) and Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) have been selected honorable mention on the American Mideast Conference's All-South Division Team. Bedard and Berry were also selected to the All-Freshman Team.

Bedard played in 27 of 28 games and averaged 11.6 points and a team-leading 6.4 rebounds.  She also led the Cavs in field goal percentage (.521) and tied for the team lead in blocked shots (22) with Berry.  Berry played in all 28 games and started 27.  She led the Cavs in scoring (13.8 points), steals (61), minutes per game (30.5), free throw percentage (.811) and was second in rebounding (4.1).  Berry shot .475 from the field, .329 from three-point and .811 from the foul line.  Seaman was the only Cavalier to start all 28 games.  She ran the point and led the Cavs with 88 assists (3.1) and with 40 three-point goals.  She averaged 11.8 points and was second on the team from the foul line (.806).

"Cavs (13-15, 5-9 AMC S) Close Regular Season with Win/Show Marked Improvement"

Even though the Walsh University Women's Basketball Team did not reach their ultimate goal of the post season, they definitely are headed in the right direction. After winning only five games last season, the Cavs improved their win total by eight games (13) and narrowly missed a post season berth. After falling to Urbana University (73-54) in their final road game, the Cavs closed the home season with a 88-66 rout of Wilberforce University at home on Saturday. Second year Head Coach Laurel Wartluft will lose only senior (Damoniq'e Askew) from this year's roster.

Walsh was eliminated from the post season, 73-54, at Urbana University on Tuesday. Turnovers and poor shooting led to the Cavs undoing. Walsh turned the ball over 20 times in the first half and trailed 32-23 at halftime. In the second half, the Cavs shot .389 (14-36) and committed eight more turnovers, and were outscored 41-31. Behind Leah Seaman's (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) four second half three-pointers, Walsh pulled to within ten points twice, but would get no closer. Seaman led the Cavs with 20 points. Dianca Gordon (5-8, So., Akron, OH/Central-Hower) and Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) each ten points. Gordon led the Cavs with eight rebounds.

Freshman standout Katie Berry (5-11, Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in the first half in in the Wilberforce win, as the Cavs built a 46-26 halftime lead. Walsh then out scored Wilberforce 42-40 in the second half and led by as many as 28 points. Berry finished 6-10 from the floor, with 3 three-pointers and six assists. Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr, Waterloo, OH/Atwater) added 15 points off the bench, with Leah Seaman scoring 12 points and handing out 7 assists. Dianca Gordon tallied 10 points and Callie Brutcher (6-0, Fr., Amherst, OH/Marion Steele) scored 10 points and grabbed 8 rebounds off the bench.

Katie Berry completed an outstanding freshman season, leading the Cavs in scoring (13.8 ppg), minutes per game (30.5), steals (61) and tying for the team lead in free throw percentage (.811) and blocked shots (22). She also handed out 76 assists. Leah Seaman emerged and led the team in three-point goals (40) and assists (88), while averaging 11.8 points and shooting .806 from the foul line. Freshman Cara Bedard led the team in field goal percentage (.521) and rebounding (6.4), while averaging 11.6 points.

"Cavs Rout Bulldogs in Season Finale"

Walsh closed the season with an 88-66 rout of Wilberforce University (5-21, 1-13 AMC S) in an American Mideast Conference South game.  The Cavs finish the season 13-15 and 5-9 in the AMC. . Walsh's win total is eight better than last year, when the finished 5-21.

"Cavs Eliminated From Playoff Contention"

(Urbana, OH) Walsh (12-15, 4-9 AMC S) fell from contention for the post season, after falling 73-54 at Urbana University (16-9, 7-6 AMC S) in an American Mideast Conference South Division game tonight.  The Cavs, who suffered their third straight loss, close the season at home against Wilberforce University on Saturday at 2 pm.

"Rio Beats Cavs for Third Time"

The third time was not the charm for Walsh (12-14, 4-8 AMC S), as they fell to NAIA No. 24 University of Rio Grande (20-6, 8-4) AMC S) for the third time this season, 72-53 in an American Mideast Conference South game.  The loss was the second in a row for Walsh and put them in must win situations in their final two games to even have a chance at an AMC Playoff berth.  The Cavs are at Urbana University on Tuesday (5:30 pm) and at home to Wilberforce University on Saturday (2 pm).  The Urbana game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

24th ranked Rio Grande led from start to finish in the win.  Walsh fell behind 15-2 in the first 4:48 of the game and trailed 40-20 at the half.  The Cavs made a charge midway through the second half and trimmed the Rio lead to 50-43 with 9:28 to play, before Rio regrouped for an 11 point run to settle the issue.

Dianca Gordon (5-8, So., Akron, OH/Central-Hower) led the Cavs with 10 points and 6 rebounds off the bench.  Britney Walker led Rio Grande with 19 points.

"Cavs Dig Early Hole, Fall at Mount Vernon"

(Mount Vernon, OH) A double digit deficit proved to be too much for Walsh (11-13, 4-7 AMC S) tonight, as they fell 59-49 to Mount Vernon Nazarene University (16-9, 4-7 AMC S) in an American Mideast Conference South game tonight.  The loss snapped the Cavs three-game winning streak and dropped them into a sixth place tie with the Cougars in the South.  Walsh looks to bounce at home against the University of Rio Grande on Saturday at 2 pm.

Mount Vernon built a 16-point (32-16) first half lead and led 39-25 at the half.  Walsh began to whittle away in the final five minutes of game and trailed 52-47 with 1:31 to play.  Turnovers plagued the throughout, as the turned the ball over 23 times.  Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) led the Cavs with 12 points. Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr, Waterloo, OH/Atwater) added ten.

"Katie Berry Named AMC Player of the Week"

Walsh University freshman standout Katie Berry is the American Mideast Conference women’s basketball Player of the Week for games played on Feb. 4-10.

Berry, a 5-foot-11 forward from Cleveland, Ohio/St. Joseph Academy HS, posted averages of 20.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in guiding the Cavaliers to a 3-0 week.

Berry opened with 12 points, nine rebounds, and four assists in a 65-64 upset of NAIA Division II No. 16 Ohio Dominican. She followed that effort with 24 points and three assists in an 83-64 decision over Canton rival Malone. She completed her performance with 25 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 showing at the free throw line, with five rebounds during an 80-71 win versus Cedarville.

For the week, Berry shot 58 percent from the field and hit 18-of-21 free throws for 86 percent. She totaled 16 rebounds, eight assists, four steals, and three blocked shots for Walsh, 12-12 overall and 4-6 AMC.

"Basketball Games at Mount Vernon Nazarene Postponed Until Thursday"

Tonight's scheduled men's and women's basketball double header at Mount Vernon Nazarene University has been postponed until Thursday, January 14.  The women's game will start at 5:30 pm, followed by the men's game at 7:30 pm.  Both games will be aired live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

"Cavs (12-12, 4-6 AMC S) Post Three-Game Sweep/Back in AMC South Playoff Picture/Return Mayor's Cup to Campus"

Walsh (11-12, 4-6 AMC S) responded to their biggest challenge of the season, by sweeping three games and climbing back into the AMC playoff race.  With American Mideast Conference South Division wins against 16th ranked Ohio Dominican University (65-64) and Cedarville University (80-71), Walsh pulled even with Urbana University (4-6 AMC S) and is tied with the Blue Knights for the final playoff spot in the South. Walsh also recaptured the Mayor's Cup with an 83-64 win over Malone College.  This week they travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene (15-9, 3-7 AMC S) on Tuesday (5:30 pm) and host the University of Rio Grande on Saturday (4 pm).  The Mount Vernon game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.  

Walsh stunned 16th ranked Ohio Dominican University 65-64 on Tuesday night.  Despite shooting just 28% from the field in the first half, the Cavs held a 26-20 halftime lead.  The Cavs offense came to life in the second half, connecting on 14-23 (.609) from the floor.  Walsh led the entire half and stretched the lead to 61-51 with 3:10 to play.  But in less than two minutes, ODU trimmed the lead to 63-61 with 1:17 to play.  Two free throws by Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) at the 1:03 mark gave the Cavs a 65-61 lead.  ODU's Cassidy Wertman then nailed a 3 to cut the Walsh lead to 65-64 with 52 seconds to play.  ODU had two chances to win the game in the final 26 seconds; the final time when Jessie Carmack’s shot was blocked by Walsh’s Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr, Waterloo, OH/Atwater) in the final seconds.  Bedard led all scorers with 20 points.  Berry added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Walsh and Mount Vernon Nazarene (15-9, 3-7 AMC S) meet for the second time on Tuesday.  Walsh won 75-59 at Alumni Arena on January 15 and lead the all-time series 33-17.  The Cougars have dropped two straight, including a 70-59 decision to Shawnee State on Saturday.

Walsh and NAIA No. 23 Rio Grande (18-6, 6-4 AMC S) meet for the third time this season on Saturday.  The Cavs are hoping the third time is the charm, after falling 58-50 in November at the Bevo Francis Classic and 72-50 at Rio on January 26.  Rio defeated Wilberforce 84-70 on Saturday and host Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday. The Cavs have lost the last five games played between the two schools and trail 33-16 in the all-time series.

Katie Berry leads the Cavs in scoring, averaging 14.1 points.  Berry is shooting .468 from the floor, .805 from the foul line and leads the team with 21 blocked shots and 52 steals.  Leah Seaman is averaging 12.0 ppg and is shooting .794 from the foul line.  Cara Bedard is averaging 12.0 points, a team leading 6.8 rebounds and is shooting .509 from the floor.

"Cavs Win 3rd Straight, Down Jackets 80-71"

Walsh (12-12, 4-6 AMC S) won its third straight game, defeating Cedarville University (12-11, 5-5 AMC S) 80-71 in an American Mideast Conference South game today.  The win keeps the Cavs hopes alive for an AMC Tournament berth.  Walsh is at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Tuesday (5:30 pm).  The game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

"Cavs Recapture Cup"

Walsh University (11-12) regained possession of the Mayor’s Cup with an 83-64 win over Malone College (6-15) tonight.  The win, Walsh’s second straight, gives the Cavs the season’s sweep of the Pioneers.  Walsh is home Saturday, for an American Mideast Conference South game against Cedarville University at 2 pm.

Walsh opened up a tight game in the first half with 14-2 run, to take a 28-13 lead at the 7:28 mark. “Cavs’ Women Stun 16th Ranked Ohio Dominican”

Walsh University (10-12, 3-6 AMC S) stunned 16th ranked Ohio Dominican University (16-7, 6-3 AMC S) 65-64 in an American Mideast Conference South Division game tonight.  Walsh will host Malone College in the Annual Mayor’s Cup game on Thursday at 6 pm.  The game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

"Cavs (9-12, 2-6 AMC S) Split AMC South Games, Host Malone in Mayor's Cup Game on Thursday"

Walsh (9-12, 2-6 AMC S) split a pair of American Mideast Conference South Division games last week, winning at Wilberforce University and losing at NAIA No. 9 Shawnee State University.  Walsh now returns home for a three-game week, which includes the annual Mayor's Cup game with Malone College on Thursday night (6 pm).  The Cavs also host AMC South games with Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday (6 pm) and Cedarville University on Saturday (2 pm).  The Malone game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us

Ciera Burkes (5-3, Fr., Shaker Heights, OH/HS) scored a career-high 18 points in Walsh's 59-54 win at Wilberforce University (5-14, 1-6 AMC S) on Tuesday night.  The win snapped Walsh's three-game losing streak.  Burkes scored all of her 18 points in the second half, as the Cavs out scored Wilberforce 31-28.  Walsh built a 54-40 lead with 5:28 to play, but had to hang on as the Bulldogs trimmed the lead to 57-54 in the final minute.  Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph) hit two free throws with 14 seconds left to ice the win.  Berry finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.  Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) and Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) also grabbed eight rebounds each. 

NAIA No. 9 Shawnee State University (20-2, 8-0) remained perfect in the AMC South Division, after romping 80-45 over the Cavs on Saturday.  The Bears jumped to a 21-3 lead and never looked back.  Walsh could manage only 7-32 (.219) from the floor in the first half, and trailed 43-17 at the half.  Shawnee shot .577 (15-26) from the floor in the first half and a blistering .615 (8-13) from behind the arc.  Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) hit four three-pointers and led the Cavs with 12 points.  

Walsh opens its three-game home week against Ohio Dominican University (16-6, 6-2 AMC S) on Tuesday.  The Panthers won the first meeting 75-66 in Columbus on January 8.  Walsh leads the all-time series 36-13.  The Panthers are coming off a 68-52 win over Cedarville University on Saturday.

Walsh and Malone College (6-14, 4-4 AMC N) meet in the 12th Annual Mayor's Cup game at Alumni Arena on Thursday night (6 pm).  Walsh won the first meeting 72-70, in overtime, at Malone's Osborne Hall on November 29.  Malone leads the all-time series 31-28 and the Cup series 7-4.  The Pioneers are coming off a 76-70 upset win over Notre Dame College last Saturday.

Walsh and Cedarville University (11-10, 4-4 AMC S) close the week on Saturday (2 pm).  The Yellow Jackets won the first meeting 79-74 at Cedarville on January 19, and lead the all-time series 18-13.  They play at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday.

Katie Berry leads the Cavs in scoring, averaging 13.2 points.  Berry is shooting .451 from the floor, .787 from the foul line and leads the team with 19 blocked shots and 45 steals.  Leah Seaman is averaging 12.3 ppg and is shooting .786 from the foul line.  Cara Bedard is averaging 11.5 points, a team leading 6.9 rebounds and is shooting .503 from the floor.

"Ninth Ranked Bears Too Much for Cavs"

(Portsmouth, OH) NAIA No. 9 Shawnee State University (20-2, 8-0) remained perfect in the American Mideast Conference South Division, after romping 80-45 over the Cavs (9-12, 2-6 AMC S) today.  The Bears jumped to a 21-3 lead and never looked back.  Walsh could manage only 7-32 (.219) from the floor in the first half, and trailed 43-17 at the half.  Shawnee shot .577 (15-26) from the floor in the first half and a blistering .615 (8-13) from behind the arc. 

Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) hit 4 three-pointers and led the Cavs with 12.  She was the only player in double figures. 

Walsh is home to Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday at 6 pm.

"Burkes Scores Career-best 18 in Road Win over Wilberforce"

(Wilberforce, OH) Ciera Burkes (5-3, Fr., Shaker Heights, OH/HS) scored a career-high 18 points, in Walsh's (9-11, 2-5 AMC S) 59-54 win at Wilberforce University (5-14, 1-6 AMC S), in an American Mideast Conference South Division game tonight.  The win snapped Walsh's three-game losing streak.  The Cavs complete a three-game road trip at NAIA No. 9, and AMC South leader Shawnee State University (19-2, 7-0 AMC S) on Saturday.   The game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

"20th Ranked Rio Grande Too Much For Cavs"

(Rio Grande, OH) Walsh (8-10, 1-5 AMC S) committed 31 turnovers in a 72-50 American Mideast Conference South Division loss to NAIA No. 20 University of Rio Grande (15-4, 4-2 AMC S) today.  The loss was the third straight for the Cavs.  Walsh is at Wilberforce University on Tuesday for an AMC South game at 5:30 pm.  The game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

Walsh shot 45% in the first half and trailed by just three points at 34-31.  The second half was all Rio, as the defensive minded Redwomen held the Cavs to just 19 points.  Walsh managed just 8-25 from the field in the second half.   Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) led Walsh with 11 points, with Darlene Woolf (5-7, Fr., East Rochester, OH/United) adding 10 off the bench.

"Cavs Falter in Second Half"

Urbana University (11-5, 3-2 AMC S) outscored Walsh 43-26 in the second half, on their way to a 68-55 American Mideast Conference South Division win tonight.  The loss drops the Cavs to 8-10 overall and to 1-4 in the AMC South.  Walsh travels to the University of Rio Grande for an AMC South game at 2 pm on Saturday.  The game will be aired live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

Each team shot below .300 in the first half, as Walsh held a 29-25 lead.  The Cavs held the lead until Urbana's Enisa Curry tied the game at 43 with 10:58 to play.  After a steal and basket by Urbana's Haley Fannon, 
the Blue Knights took the lead for good at 45-43.  Fannon then nailed a 3-ball to put the Knights up 48-43 with 9:39 to play.  Walsh would cut the lead to three points at 55-52, but would get no closer.

Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) led the Cavs with 19 points.  Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) added 11 points and Dianca Gordon (5-8, So., Akron, OH/Central-Hower) had 10 rebounds.  Fannon led Urbana with 19 points and Tia Simms 15.

"Cavs (8-9, 1-3 AMC S) Split AMC South Games"

Walsh (8-9, 1-3 AMC S) lost a golden chance to even their American Mideast Conference South Division record last week, when they spilt games with Mount Vernon Nazarene and Cedarville University.  After downing the much improved Cougars at Alumni Arena on Tuesday, Walsh let a big second half lead slip away at Cedarville before falling to the Yellow Jackets.  This week, the Cavs host Urbana University on Tuesday (6 pm) and play at the University of Rio Grande on Saturday (2 pm).  The Rio Grande game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.  

Behind Leah Seaman’s (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) 19 second half points, Walsh University won its first AMC South Division game, defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene University (13-4, 1-2 AMC S) 75-59 on Tuesday.  After just scoring just two points in the first half, Seaman carried the Cavs, after Mount Vernon rallied to take the lead at 43-41 with 11:27 to play.  Seaman then scored five straight points, as Walsh took the lead for good at 46-43 with 9:37 to play.  Walsh led by as many as 17 points, as Seaman finished with a game-high 21 points.  Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph) added 15 points and 6 assists and Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) tallied 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.  Dianca Gordon (5-8, So., Akron, OH/Central-Hower) provided a spark off the bench with 6 points and 7 rebounds.

Walsh wasted a 16-point second half lead, and fell 79-74 in an AMC South Division game at Cedarville University (10-7, 3-1 AMC S) on Saturday.  The loss was the 12th straight to the Yellow Jackets.  The Cavs played some of its best basketball of the season in building a 45-32 halftime lead.  Walsh shot .567 (17-30) from the floor in the first half.  The Cavs quickly stretched the lead to 16 points (48-32) 58 seconds into the second half, and kept the lead until the Yellow Jackets whittled away and tied the game at 62 on an Rachel Hurley 3-pointer with 7:52 to play.  Walsh took its final lead at 67-65 on a 3-pointer from Katie Berry.  After the Yellow Jackets regained the lead, Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) tied the game at 69 on a layup with 3:54 left.  The Jackets regained the lead on the next possession and outscored the Cavs 10-5 down the stretch.  Berry led the Cavs with 24 points, shooting 10-15 from the field and 2-3 from 3-point.  Berry also had 5 assists and 4 steals.  Cara Bedard was the only other Cavalier to reach double figures with 11 points.  The Cavs had one of their finest games from the floor in defeat, shooting .527 on 29-55 from the floor.  The Cavs were also 6-10 (.600) from 3-point.  The Yellow Jackets were just as sharp from the floor, shooting .588, which included .654 (17-26) in the second half when they outscored the games 47-29.

Walsh plays host to Urbana University (10-5, 2-2 AMC S) on Tuesday.  The Blue Knights are coming off a 52-51 win over Ohio Dominican University on Saturday and are led by Tia Simms' 13.7 ppg.  Walsh leads the all-time series 24-15.  Walsh is at Rio Grande (14-4, 2-2 AMC S) on Saturday.  The two teams played at Rio Grande on November 17 in the Bevo Francis Tournament, with Rio winning 58-50.  Rio leads the all-time series 16-32.  Rio bested Wilberforce 76-56 on Saturday and are led by Britney Walker's 14.3 points.  They play at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday. 

Katie Berry leads the Cavs in scoring, averaging 14.6 points.  She is shooting .497 from the field (6th-AMC) and .772 from the foul line (6th-AMC).  Leah Seaman is averaging 12.9 ppg and Cara Bedard is averaging 11.9 points, a team leading 6.8 rebounds and is shooting .533 from the floor.

"Cavs Lose Lead, Game at Cedarville"

(Cedarville, OH) Walsh (8-9, 1-3 AMC S) wasted a 16-point second half lead, and fell 79-74 in an American Mideast Conference South Divivsion game at Cedarville University (10-7, 3-1 AMC S) tonight.  The loss was the 12th straight to the Yellow Jackets.  Walsh returns home on Tuesday night to meet Urbana University at 6 pm in an AMC South game.

The Cavs played some of its best basketball of the season in building a 45-32 halftime lead.  Walsh shot .567 (17-30) from the floor in the first half.  The Cavs quickly stretched the lead to 16 points (48-32) 58 seconds into the second half, and kept the lead until the Yellow Jackets whittled away and tied the game at 62 on an Rachel Hurley 3-pointer with 7:52 to play.  Walsh took its final lead at 67-65 on a 3-pointer from Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph).   After the Yellow Jackets regained the lead, Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) tied the game at 69 on a layup with 3:54 left.  The Jackets regained the lead on the next possession and outscored the Cavs 10-5 down the stretch.

Berry led the Cavs with 24 points, shooting 10-15 from the field and 2-3 from 3-point.  Berry also had five assists and four steals.  Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) was the only other Cavalier to reach double figures with 11 points.  The Cavs had one of their finest games from the floor in defeat, shooting .527 on 29-55 from the floor.  The Cavs were also 6-10 (.600) from 3-point.  The Yellow Jackets were just as sharp from the floor, shooting .588, which included .654 (17-26) in the second half when they outscored the games 47-29.

"Seaman Sparks Cavs to First AMC Win"

"Cavs Look to Rebound"

Walsh (7-8, 0-2 AMC S) fell below the .500 mark and to 0-2 in the American Mideast Conference South Division, after losing to a pair of NAIA ranked teams last week.  The Cavs lost 75-66 to NAIA No. 8 Ohio Dominican University last Tuesday, and then fell 73-61 to 11th ranked Shawnee State University on Saturday.  This Tuesday, the Cavs host Mount Vernon Nazarene University at Alumni Arena at 6 pm and play at Cedarville University on Saturday at 5:30 pm.  Both are AMC South games.  The Cedarville game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.   

Ohio Dominican outscored Walsh 21-11 in the final 4:27 of the second half, on their way to a 75-66 win in the American Mideast Conference South opener for both teams in Columbus on Tuesday night.  Despite shooting 46% in the first half, the Cavs trailed 30-24 at the break. The Cavs would rally in the second half and take their final lead at 55-54 with 4:27 to play on a Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) lay-up.  The Panthers regained the lead at 58-55, when Seaman drained a three-pointer with 3:46 to play to knot the game for the final time.  The Panthers then took the lead for good on the next possession.  Seaman paced the Cavs with 18 points.  Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) added 13 points and eight rebounds and Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy) added ten points. 

Shawnee State rallied to defeat Walsh 73-61 on Wall of Fame Saturday.  Shawnee erased a seven-point second half deficit to record the win.  Behind Becky Babione’s 13 first half points, Shawnee led 38-33 at halftime. Walsh then erased the five point deficit in the first five minutes of the second half and built a 47-40 lead with 15:01 to play. The Bears used an 8-0 run to regain the lead at 48-47 with 13:27 to play, when Walsh took their final lead at 50-48 on a three-pointer from Leah Seaman. Seaman finished with 18 points. The Bears tied the game at 50 on a jumper from Jennifer Grandy and took the lead for good (53-50) at the 10:49 mark on a three-pointer from Mallory Albers. Shawnee outscored the Cavs 20-11 in the final ten minutes.  Katie Berry led the Cavs and all scorers with 20 points. Cara Bedard led Walsh with 12 rebounds.

Katie Berry leads the Cavs in scoring, averaging 13.9 points.  She is shooting .494 from the field and is averaging 3.9 rebounds.  Leah Seaman is averaging 12.7 ppg and is shooting .795 from the foul line.  Cara Bedard is averaging 12.0 points, a team leading 6.7 rebounds and is shooting .518 from the floor. 

Walsh battles Mount Vernon Nazarene University (13-3, 1-1 AMC S) in an AMC South contest on Tuesday. The Cougars have won two straight games and defeated Wilberforce University 90-57 on Saturday.  The Cougars are 8-1 away from home and are led by Amanda Hines, who is scoring 16.6 points and averaging 6.9 rpg.  Walsh leads the all-time series 32-17.  Walsh travels to Cedarville (8-7, 1-1 AMC S) on Saturday.  The Yellow Jackets lost at home to Ohio Dominican University 63-54 on Saturday.  They play at Urbana University on Tuesday night.  Alison Lemon leads the Jackets in scoring, averaging 16.5 ppg.  Cedarville has won the last 11 games with the Cavs and lead the all-time series 17-13.

"Cavs Play Hard, but Fall to 11th Ranked Shawnee State

NAIA No. 11 Shawnee State (14-2, 2-0 AMC S) rallied to defeat Walsh University (7-8, 0-2 AMC S) 73-61 in an American Mideast Conference South Division game today. Shawnee erased a seven-point second half deficit to record the win.

Behind Becky Babione’s 13 first half points, Shawnee led 38-33 at halftime. Walsh erased the five point deficit in the first five minutes of the half and built a 47-40 lead with 15:01 to play. "Cavs Fall in AMC South Opener"

(Columbus, OH) NAIA No. 8 Ohio Dominican University (11-4, 1-0 AMC S) outscored Walsh (7-7, 0-1 AMC S) 21-11 in the final 4:27 of the second half, on their way to a 75-66 win in the American Mideast Conference South opener for both teams tonight.  The Cavs return to action at home on Saturday, when they host Shawnee State University in an AMC South contest at 2 pm.

Despite shooting 46% in the first half, the Cavs trailed 30-24 at the break.  The Cavs would rally in the second half and take their final lead at 55-54 with 4:27 to play on a Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) lay-up.  The Panthers regained the lead at 58-55, when Seaman drained a three-pointer with 3:46 to play to knot the game for the final time.  The Panthers then took the lead for good on the next possession on a basket from Katalin Beck.  Beck led all scorers with 25 points.

Seaman paced the Cavs with 18 points.  Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) added 13 points and eight rebounds and Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy) added ten points.  Walsh shot 40% (25-51) for the night, but turned the ball over 20 times.

"Cavs Meet Pair of AMC Ranked Teams"

Walsh (7-6), winners of their last two games, open American Mideast Conference South play against two NAIA ranked teams this week.  The Cavs travel to Columbus on Tuesday to meet NAIA No. 8 Ohio Dominican University, then host 16th ranked Shawnee State University on Saturday at  Alumni Arena.  The Ohio Dominican game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.  At halftime of Saturday's Shawnee State game, Walsh will introduce their 2008 Wall of Fame class, which includes all-time scoring scoring leader Melanie Scheetz. 

Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy), Brittani Maddox (5-11, So., Cleveland Heights, OH/HS) and Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) combined for 54 points in Walsh's 89-70 win over the University of Northwestern Ohio last Wednesday night.  Walsh shot .645 (20-31) from the floor in the first half, and built a 44-26 halftime lead.  Berry connected on 11-12 from the floor to lead all scorers with a career-high 26 points.  She also added seven rebounds.  Maddox, starting in place of the injured Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS), scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  She was 7-10 from the field.  Bedard also tallied 14 points, connecting on 7-9 from the floor.  The Cavs continued their hot shooting in the second half, hitting on 18-27 (.667) to finish the night 38-58 for .655.

Katie Berry leads the Cavs in scoring, averaging 13.8 points.  She is shooting .526 from the field and is averaging 4.2 rebounds.  Cara Bedard is averaging 12.5 points and a team leading 6.2 rebounds.  Bedard is shooting .533 from the floor.  Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) is also in double figures at 11.9 points and is shooting .806 from the free throw line.   Walsh, which has already eclipsed last year's win total of five, is allowing only 64.5 points per game.  The Cavs allowed 71.8 last season.  Walsh is holding opponents to .390 from the field and .272 from three-point. 

Walsh and eighth ranked Ohio Dominican University (10-4) meet at Alumni Hall on Tuesday night.  The Panthers were upset 83-75 at Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday.  Krissy Haines is one of four players in double figures and is averaging 17.5 points and 7.9 rebounds.  Walsh lost both games last year, but lead the all-time series 36-12.  Walsh will host 16th ranked Shawnee State (12-2) on Saturday.  The Bears have returned to the national limelight, after finishing 19-13 last season.  Becky Babione is one of four players in double figures and is averaging 12.2 points and 8.7 rebounds.  Shawnee is home on Wednesday to the University of Rio Grande.  Walsh dropped both games last season and trail the all-time series 31-4.

"Berry, Maddox, Bedard Lead Cavs to Second Straight Win"

Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy), Brittani Maddox (5-11, So., Cleveland Heights, OH/HS) and Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) combined for 54 points in Walsh's (7-6) 89-70 win over the University of Northwestern Ohio tonight.  Walsh shot .645 (20-31) from the floor in the first half, and built a 44-26 halftime lead.

Berry connected on 11-12 from the floor to lead all scorers with a career-high 26 points.  She also added seven rebounds.  Maddox, starting in place of the injured Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS), scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  She was 7-10 from the field.  Bedard also tallied 14 points, connecting on 7-9 from the floor. 

The Cavs continued their hot shooting in the second half, hitting on 18-27 (.667) to finish the night 38-58 for .655.

"Cavs Romp over Trinity 75-47"

(Orlando, FL) Walsh evened its record at 6-6 with a 75-47 romp over Trinity International in their final game at the NAIA Disney Challenge this morning.  The win also snapped Walsh's two-game losing streak.

Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) led the Cavs' offensive attack with 21 points and ten rebounds.  Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) added 11 points and four assists and Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy) scored 10 points and had four assists.  The Cavs also received another strong effort from Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS).  Askew led everyone with 15 rebounds, while also adding eight points and four assists.  Angie Eickelman (5-9, So., Akron, OH/Hoban) added nine points on three three-pointers.

"Cavs Play Well, But Fall 69-65 at Disney Challenge"

(Orlando, FL) Walsh (5-6) played well, but lost 69-65 to King College at the NAIA Disney Challenge in Orlando, Florida today.  The Cavs close their trip to Florida against Trinity International at 8 am tomorrow morning.

Walsh shot well the entire game (.527) and led 35-30 at the half.  The second half was tight, with King finally pulling away in the final minutes.  Brittani Maddox (5-11, So., Cleveland Heights, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with 16 points.  Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy) tallied 15 points and Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) added 13 points and seven rebounds.

"Poor Shooting Dooms Cavs at Siena Heights"

(Adrian, MI) Walsh shot only .230 from the field, in losing 51-39 at Siena Heights University (7-5) this afternoon.  The Cavs were only 14-61 from the field, in falling back to the .500 mark at 5-5.  Walsh now heads to Orlando, Florida for the NAIA Disney Challenge on Tuesday and Wednesday. 

Despite the poor shooting, the Cavs trailed by only five points at halftime (26-21).   In the second half, Walsh would connect on only 6-30 from the field.  Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) continued to be a monster on the glass, pulling down a career high 18 rebounds.  She had 15 rebounds on Thursday in the Cavs win over Point Park.  She added nine points.  Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) led the Cavs with 10 points.

"Berry, Askew Key Cavs Win over Point Park"

Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) and Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy) combined for 36 points in Walsh's 79-68 come from behind win over Point Park College tonight.  The win improves the Cavs record to 5-4, while the Pioneers fall to 2-7. Walsh is at Siena Heights on Saturday at 1 pm.

Brittney Wilson scored 17 first half for Point Park, as the Pioneers led 34-32 at the break.  Walsh clamped down on Wilson and Pioneers in the second half, holding Wilson scoreless and Point Park to just 34 points.  Walsh took the lead for good at 39-38 with 16:32 to play on three-pointer by  Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS).  Seaman finished with 13 points.  Berry shot 7-12 from the field and 8-9 from the foul line in scoring a game-high 22 points.  Askew added 12 points, 10 in the second half, and a game-high 15 rebounds.  The Cavs shot .520 (13-25) from the floor in the second half and 18-21 (.857) from the line in the second half.  Point Park was led by Ashleigh Hays 18 points.

"Cavs No Match For Unbeaten Crimson Hawks"

(Indiana, PA) Walsh (4-4) was no match for the undefeated Indiana University Crimson Hawks (9-0), falling 78-47 tonight.  The loss snapped the Cavs three-game win streak.   Walsh will host Point Park Collge at Alumni Arena on Thursday at 7 pm.

Walsh led three times in the contest, at  3-2, 4-2 and 5-2.  After a 6-6 tie at the 17:04 mark on a jumper by Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy), the Crimson Hawks led the rest of the way.  The Cavs trailed 45-30 at the half, as Indiana shot .515 in the first half, compared to the Cavs .385.  Walsh never challenged in the second half and trailed by as many as 33 points (78-45).  Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) led Walsh with 16 points, shooting 6-11 from the field.  Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) added 10 points, Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, Ciera Burkes 5-3, Fr., Shaker Heights, OH/HS) dished out eight assists and Ciera Burkes 5-3, Fr., Shaker Heights, OH/HS) dished out eight assists.

"Cavs (4-3) Back in Action After Layoff"

Walsh (4-3) resumes action on Monday, in the first of three games this week.  The Cavs last played on November 29.  Walsh travels to Indiana University (PA) on Monday (5:30 pm), host Point Park in a make-up game on Thursday (7 pm) and travel to Siena Heights University (MI) on Saturday (1 pm).

Walsh lost 78-70 to Indiana (PA) last year in the only meeting with the Crimson Hawks.  Indiana is off to an 8-0 start and is ranked sixth in NCAA lll.  The Cavs and Point Park will played their postponed game from December 1 on Thursday at Alumni Arena.  Point Park is 2-6 on the season.  Walsh leads the all-time series 5-0.  The Cavs and Siena Heights meet for the second time.  The Saints won 87-51 last year and stand 6-4.

Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) leads the team in scoring, with a 13.6 per game average.  The Cavs guard is also averaging 3.7 assists per game.  Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland Heights, OH/St. Joseph Academy) is averaging 13.0 points and 4.9 rebounds and is shooting .493 from the field.    Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) is averaging 12.4 points and leads the team in rebounding (6.3 RPG).   Bedard is shooting .567 from the floor.  The Cavs have been outstanding defensively, allowing only 65.0 points per contest.

"Cavs Over .500 with OT Win at Malone"

Walsh moved over the .500 mark, at 4-3, after posting back-to-back wins over Houghton College and Malone College last week.  This is the first time that Walsh has been over the .500 mark since the 2005-06 season.  The Cavs scheduled game with Point Park, at home, last Saturday was cancelled due to travel problems for the Pioneers.  The teams are working on a new date.  The Cavs are idle this week.

Walsh reached the .500 mark (3-3) with a 74-59 won over visiting Houghton College last Tuesday. After trailing 3-2, Walsh took the lead for good on a three-point basket by Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS). Seaman finished with 12 points and five rebounds. The Cavs shot .586 (17-29) from the floor in the first half in building a 44-30 lead at the break. Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) scored 12 of her game-high 19 points in the first half. Walsh led by as many as 25 points (61-36, 70-45) in the second half. Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) was the only other Cavalier to reach double figures, scoring 11 points off the bench. Walsh shot .536 (30-56) from the field and .500 (6-12) from three-point.

Leah Seaman's 10-footer with under five seconds to play in overtime lifted Walsh to a 72-70 win over Malone College (1-7) last Thursday.  Behind Angie Eickelman's (5-9, So., Akron, OH/Hoban) 8 first half points, Walsh built a 34-24 halftime lead.  The Cavs led 50-40 late in the second half, when Malone's Kellyn Murphy took over to pull the Pioneers back into the game.  Murphy scored 16 of her game-high 26 points in the second half, as Malone out scored the Cavs 41-31 to tie the game at 65 at the of regulation.  Walsh out scored the Pioneers 7-5 in the extra session.  Seaman led the Cavs with a career-high 22 points, while adding five steals, four assists and three rebounds.  Katie Berry added 14 points and Eickleman 10.  Walsh was 23-30 (.767) from the foul line.

Leah Seaman leads the team in scoring, with a 13.6 per game average.  The Cavs guard is also averaging 3.7 assists per game.  Katie Berry is averaging 13.0 points and 4.9 rebounds.  She is shooting .493 from the field.    Cara Bedard is averaging 12.4 points and leads the team in rebounding (6.3 RPG).   Bedard is shooting .567 from the floor.  The Cavs have been outstanding defensively, allowing only 65.0 points per contest.

Today’s scheduled women’s basketball game between Walsh University and Point Park University, at Walsh, has been postponed.  The two teams are looking to reschedule and will announce the date next week.

"Seaman's OT Basket Lifts Cavs over Malone"

Leah Seaman's (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) 10-footer with under five seconds to play in overtime lifted Walsh to a 72-70 win over Malone College (1-7) tonight.  The win also lifted the Cavs over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 4-3.  The win was the third straight for the surging Cavs.  Walsh is home to Point Park College on Saturday at 2 pm.

Cavs Edge Closer to .500 with Home Win/Host Houghton on Tuesday/at Malone on Thursday

Walsh (2-3) closed to within one game of the .500 mark, after an impressive 82-66 win over Roberts Wesleyan College last Tuesday.  This week the Cavs are home to Houghton College on Tuesday (6 pm) and to Point Park University on Saturday (2 pm).  Walsh and Malone renew their rivalry on Thursday at Osborne Hall at 5:30 pm.  The game will be aired live on AM 900 WCER and on the internet at www.wcer.us.

Walsh led from start to finish in defeating Roberts Wesleyan 82-66 last Tuesday.  The Cavs led 36-28 at halftime, and then exploded for 46 second half points in the win.  Walsh placed four players in double figures, led by Katie Berry's (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) 21 points, five assists and three steals.  Berry was 9-13 from the field.  The Cavs received another strong performance from Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS).  Seaman tallied 16 points, dished out seven assists and had two steals.  Natalie Houdek (6-0, Fr., Brunswick, OH/HS) added 11 points and Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench.  Walsh shot .492 from the field and a blistering .593 (16-27) in the second half.  The Cavs out rebounded the Raiders 43-37.

Katie Berry leads the team in scoring, with a 13.2 per game average.  Berry is shooting .500 (27-54) from the field.  She is also averaging 5.8 rebounds.  Cara Bedard is averaging 12.2 points and leads the team in rebounding (7.0 RPG).  Leah Seaman is also in double figures, averaging 12.2 points.  Seaman also leads the team with 19 assists. 

Walsh leads the all-time series 4-0 with Houghton and 5-0 with Point Park.  Walsh and Malone (1-5) meet for the 59th time on Thursday, with Malone holding a 31-27 series edge.  The Pioneers have won the last three meetings.  The Mayor's Cup game will be played on February 7 at Walsh.

"Walsh Best Roberts Wesleyan 82-66"

Cavs Fall in Title Game at Rio Grande Tournament

Walsh (1-3) lost two out of three games last week, but reached the championship game of the Bevo Francis Tournament at the University of Rio Grande.  This week, the Cavs host Roberts Wesleyan College on Tuesday, November 20 at 6 pm.

Walsh fell to 0-2, losing 70-64 to the University of Northwestern Ohio (2-1) in their home opener last Tuesday.  The Cavs turned the ball over 15 times in the first half and trailed 38-29 at halftime.  After falling behind by ten points (44-34) in the second half, the Cavs came back in a flurry.  They would go on a 16-7 run in the next six minutes and take their first lead of the game at 51-49 on a Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) three-pointer.  After UNOH tied the game at 51 at the 9:33 mark, the Cavs took their final lead at 53-51 on a Callie Brutcher (6-0, Fr., Amherst, OH/Marion Steele) basket.  The Racers regained the lead at 55-53, and were never headed.  Seaman led all scorers with a career-high 16 points.  Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench and Brutcher tallied ten points.  Walsh's Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) led all rebounders with 13.

"Cavs Fall 58-50 in Title Game"

(Rio Grande, OH) Despite a fine defensive effort, Walsh (1-3) fell 58-50 to the University of Rio Grande (4-0) in the championship game of the Bevo Francis Tournament today.  Despite shooting just .280 (7-25) in the first half, Walsh trailed by only one point (22-21) at the break.  The second half was close throughout, with Walsh holding its final lead at 45-44 with 7:19 left.   

Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) sparkled off the bench, leading the Cavs with 18 points and eight reboounds.  She was 8-16 from the floor.  Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) was the only other Cavalier to reach double figures with 10 points.  Damoniq'e Askew (5-8, Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) came off the bench and grabbed seven rebounds in 13 minutes.

Walsh is home on Tuesday to Roberts Wesleyan at 6 pm.

"Youngsters Propel Cavs to First Win"

(Rio Grande, OH) Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) and Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) combined for 36 points, as Walsh (1-2) won its first game of the season, 77-74 against Milligan College (1-4) at the Bevo Francis Tournament at the University of Rio Grande.  The Cavs will meet host Rio Grande in the championship game at 6 pm on Saturday.  Rio defeated Houghton College 70-57.

"Cavs Fall in Home Opener"

Walsh fell to 0-2, losing 70-64 to the University of Northwestern Ohio (2-1) tonight.  The Cavs are on the road this weekend, at the Bevo Francis Classic at the University of Rio Grande.  They meet Milligan College on Friday.

The Racers shot 43.8 from three-point in the first half; in building a 38-29 lead.  Their largest lead was 34-21, at the 4:16 mark. The Cavs turned the ball over 15 times in the first half.  After falling behind by ten points (44-34) at the 16:34 mark of the second half, the Cavs began to whittle away.  They would go on a 16-7 run in the next six minutes and take their first lead of the game at 51-49 on a Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS) three-pointer.  After UNOH's Alexa Kennedy tied the game at 51 at the 9:33 mark, the Cavs took their final lead at 53-51 on a Callie Brutcher (6-0, Fr., Amherst, OH/Marion Steele) basket.  The Racers regained the lead at 55-53 on a Molly French jumper with 6:57 to play, and were never headed. 

Leah Seaman led all scorers with a career-high 16 points.  Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench and Brutcher tallied ten points.  Walsh's Katie Berry (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) led all rebounders with 13.  Kristy Koester led the Racers' attack with 13 points.

"Cavs Drop Opener at Cornerstone"

(Grand Rapids, MI) Walsh (0-1) fell 63-56 in their season opener at Cornerstone University (3-0) today.  Walsh opens the home season, on Tuesday, November 10 against the University of Northwestern Ohio at 7 pm. 

Walsh shot just .50 (6-24) in the first half, but trailed only 27-23 at the half.  The Cavs then rallied, and led by four points in the second half, when Jessie Miller (5-10, So., Strasburg, OH/HS) left the game with an injury to her left knee.  Miller finished as the Cavs' top scorer with 15 points.  She hit 6-11 from the field and 3-5 from three point range.  Freshmen Cara Bedard (6-0, Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) and Ciera Burkes (5-3, Shaker Heights, OH/HS) each added ten points.  Bedard also led the Cavs with eight rebounds.  Brittany Bailey (5-11, Fr., Coshocton, OH/HS) added six rebounds off the bench and Dianca Gordon (5-8, So., Akron, OH/Central-Hower) five.

"Cavs Open the Season at Cornerstone on Saturday"

Walsh opens the season at Cornerstone University on Saturday. The game time is still to be determined, depending on whether Cornerstone hosts the NAIA Regional Volleyball Tournament.

Head Coach Laurel Wartluft (233-253, 18th yr./5-21 2nd yr. at Walsh) returns six letter winners from 2006-07. Walsh finished 5-21 overall last year and 3-15 in the American Mideast Conference. For a complete basketball preview, log onto the Walsh University website at www.walsh.edu.

"Wartluft Announces Remainder of Recruiting Class"
 
Walsh University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Laurel Wartluft has announced the remainder of her 2007 recruiting class.  Wartluft will begin her second season at Walsh this coming fall.
 
Center Brittany Bailey (5-11, Fr.,Coshocton, OH/River View) earned three letters under Coach Caroline Daugherty at River View High School.  Bailey averaged 5.2 points and 5.4 rebounds as a member of the two-time state champion Black Bears.  She was a member of National Honor Society and achieved Honor and Merit Roll. Bailey is the daughter of Jim and Sandi Bailey and will major in education.
 
Center Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo), a First Team All-Ohio honoree, averaged 25.3 points and 12.1 rebounds for Bob Hamilton at Waterloo High School.  She was PTC and Akron Touchdown Club Player of the Year, District III Player of the Year, and holds the school record in scoring, blocks and field goal percentage.  She earned 12 letters at Waterloo, four each for basketball, volleyball and track.  Bedard was also a member of National Honor Society, a Portage county teen of the month, and Valedictorian.  Bedard is the daughter of Paul and Karla Bedard and will major in Pre-Pharmacy
 
Callie Brutcher (6-1, Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) comes to Walsh after lettering four times for John Rositano at Amherst Steele.  Brutcher averaged 14 points and 7.3 rebounds her senior year and 8.5 points and 7.1 rebounds her junior year to help lead her team to a District Championship and Regional Championship appearance.  She was Third Team All-District , First Team All Lorain County and First Team All SWC.  Brutcher is the daughter of Dale and Ellen Brutcher and will major in Psychology.
 
Ciera Burks (5-3, Fr., Shaker Heights, OH/HS) earned four letters at the point guard position for Don Readance.  Burks  was a two-time All League selection, averaging 14 points and two rebounds her senior year. Burks is the daughter of Roosevelt Burks and Krishna McDonald and is a Physical Education/Business major.
 
Guard Ashley Ciarrochi (5-7, Fr., Akron, OH/Field) comes to Walsh after lettering for Jeff Kidd and the Falcons at Field High School.  Ciarrochi tallied 14 points and three rebounds per game her senior year. Ciarrochi is the daughter of Joe and Dawn Ciarrochi and is a Liberal Arts Major.
 
Forward Natalie Houdek (6-1, Fr., Brunswick, OH/HS) earned three letters for Paul Gerycz at Brunswick High School.  Houdek averaged 11 points and 4.3 rebounds per game her senior year, achieving First Team Pioneer Conference and team MVP.  In the classroom, she attained a 3.5 GPA and All-Academic Team Pioneer Conference.  Houdek is the daughter of Gayle Houdek and is an education major.
 
Kristen Pallozzi (5-6, Fr., Lowellville, OH/HS), an honorable mention All-Ohio honoree, lettered four times for Anthony Matisi and the Rockets of Lowellville High School.  She averaged 14 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, leading her team to two Regional Finals and three league championships.  Pallozzi set the three-point shooting record and earned First Team honors her senior year, Second Team Northeast Ohio.  Pallozzi is the daughter of Bob and Renette Pallozzi and will major in Nursing.
 
Point guard Laura Schiele (5-7, Fr., Atwater, OH/Waterloo) earned four letters for Todd Wise and Bob Hamilton at Waterloo High School.  Schiele scored 1,000 career points in helping the Vikings achieve two District Championships and six straight PTC championships.  Her senior year Schiele averaged 16 points and 1.8 rebounds, earning her special mention All-Ohio and Team MVP.  Schiele is the daughter of Aaron and Jennie Schiele and is a Liberal Arts major.
 
Darlene Woolf (5-7, Fr., East Rochester, OH/United) lettered three times for Roger Ziegler at United High School.  Woolf earned Second Team All League and Second Team All District honors, averaging 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds her senior year.  She was a member of National Honor Society and on the Honor Roll.  Woolf is the daughter of William and Jeanne Woolf and will major in Pre-Physical Therapy.

"Walsh University Names Kevin Longanecker as Head Women’s Golf Coach and Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach"

Walsh University Director of Athletics, Dale Howard, has announced the hiring of Kevin Longanecker as Head Women’s Golf Coach and Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach.  Longanecker replaces Karley Mohler, who resigned in May.  Longanecker will assume his duties on July 1, 2007.

Longanecker is a 1985 graduate of Kent State University, who most recently taught at Stow High School (OH) and was junior varsity boys’ basketball coach.  He is being reunited with Walsh University Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Laurel Wartluft, whom he served under as a student assistant coach at Kent State in 1984-85. 

He has served as a head high school coach at Kent Roosevelt High School (OH) (2001-2005), Salem High School (OH) (1994-1998) and Big Spring High School (PA) (1991-1994).  Longanecker was a basketball assistant coach at Cloverdale High School (IN) (1987-1989), Bristol High School (OH) (1985-87, 1983-84).  He was also the Head Golf at Cloverdale.  He has also coached track and football at Cloverleaf.

Longanecker played varsity basketball, football and track at Astoria High School (1978-1980) and played basketball at Kent State-Trumbull (1982-83).  He graduated from Kent State University with a B.S. in secondary education (1985).

“Walsh University Signs Katie Berry to NAIA Women’s Basketball Letter of Intent”

Walsh University Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Laurel Wartluft, has announced that Katie Berry has signed a NAIA National Letter of Intent to continue her education and play intercollegiate basketball for the Cavaliers.  Berry is a 5-10 guard from St. Joseph Academy in Cleveland, Ohio.  Berry lettered four years for Head Coach Jill Garlock.

“I am excited to have Katie as a Walsh Cavalier,” exclaimed Coach Wartluft.  “She possesses the skills and basketball savvy that will assist our women’s basketball program to reach greater heights in the future.  Katie has a passion for the game, and a work ethic that will motivate her teammates and all who watch.”

Katie averaged 19.1 points per game and scored 421 points her senior year.  She led the team in rebounding (9.1 pg), assists (3.6 pg), steals (4.5 pg) and blocks (2.3 pg) and was named Team MVP.  Berry was named to the AP Northeast Lakes All-Star District Team, Cleveland Plain Dealer Player of the Week, a Sun Newspaper All-Star and honorable mention All-Ohio. 

Berry led St. Joseph in steals, assists and blocked shots all four years.  She totaled 350 career steals, for a 4.3 per game average. 

Berry is the daughter of Michael and Charlene Berry and will major in special education.
