The Br. Charles St. James Scholarship was founded in 2005 in honor of “Brother Charlie” and his dedication to Walsh University.  The scholarship originated to help those students that exemplify service to others.  This is a continued project through Residence Life, that the Resident Assistants work on to honor those students that embody the morals and values of Brother Charlie himself.

Brother Charles St. James was born on June 29, 1932 in Burlington, VT.  After his freshman year at St. Michaels’s College, Colchester, VT, Brother Charlie decided to begin his formal training as a Brother of Christian Instruction at La Mennais College.  From 1955 to 1970, Brother Charlie was a high school teacher.  From 1970-1974, Brother Charlie worked for the Archdiocese of Detroit.  Prior to coming to Walsh in 1992, he spent thirteen years at Loyola University in Chicago working with campus ministry.

From 1992 until his death on December 17, 2006, Brother Charlie served the Walsh community through his charismatic presence, ability to listen and desire to help students.  The past fourteen years of his life Brother Charlie fought the onset of Parkinson’s disease.  His illness did not deter him from his passion of helping others, especially students at Walsh.  Brother Charlie’s legacy lives on and his devotion to students will long be remembered.

Funding

The Br. Charles St. James Scholarship is funded through the Brother Charlie Bowl-A-Thon established by the Residence Life staff of Walsh University and by the memorial contributions made when Br. Charlie passed in 2006.  Currently, the scholarship is not endowed and when the funds are used, the Br. Charlie Scholarship will no longer exist.

A group of alumni volunteers who were close to Br. Charlie want to honor his commitment to service and have pledge to raise the funds necessary to endow his scholarship.  To become endowed, which means the principle funds raised are invested and only the interest is awarded, a scholarship must have a minimum of $25,000.  Once this level is reached the Brother Charles St. James Scholarship will become a permanent scholarship for Walsh University students, meaning his legacy will live on forever.

How Can I Participate?    

You can make a donation through the Annual Walsh Fund campaign by restricting your contribution to the Brother Charlie Scholarship.  You can also make a larger pledge payable over the next five years:

            $5,000                         $1,000 per year           $83.33 per month

            $2,500                         $   500 per year           $41.66 per month

            $1,000                         $   200 per year           $16.66 per month

            $   500                         $   100 per year           $  8.33 per month

As an added incentive, if you make a pledge to the Br. Charlie Scholarship, you will not be solicited again for the Walsh Fund during the length of your pledge.
