Bryan Whittaker takes over the reins of the Cavs’ Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs. Whittaker replaces Sherry Bossart who coached the men’s team for 32 years and women’s team for 27 years. Bossart, who coached Whittaker at Walsh, will remain as an assistant.
Whittaker returned to the program this past year as a graduate assistant coach. He played for Walsh from 1988-92 when he earned four team MVP awards and was an NAIA Academic All-American in 1991 and 1992. He currently holds the all-time record in wins at the first singles position with 56. He was inducted into the Walsh Wall of Fame in 2007. He was also a two-time first-team All-District 22 selection and was Walsh’s co-Male Athlete of the Year in 1992. He earned his BA in accounting from Walsh in 1992 and is completing work for his master’s in education.
Whittaker served as Lake High School’s boys’ tennis coach since 2005. He has worked in manufacturing and service industries for the past 20 years. This past season he led the Blue Streaks to their first ever Federal League championship and was voted Stark County Coach of the Year by the Stark County Coaches Association.
"We are very fortunate to have a coach of Bryan’s credentials and abilities agree to take over our men’s and women’s tennis programs from Sherry Bossart," said Dale Howard. "Under Sherry’s leadership, both of our programs flourished and become national known for their consistency and competitiveness, earning numerous conference championships and trips to the national tournaments. With Sherry remaining on board as a full time assistant coach, coupled with Bryan’s vision and passion, I am confident that the program is now well positioned to make a successful transition into the NCAA II."
“I'm very excited to have the opportunity to inherit such a respected and tradition rich program from Coach Bossart,” exclaimed Whittaker. “Her record of accomplishment speaks for itself and I'm very pleased she has agreed to stay on as an assistant coach this coming year. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach at the high school I graduated from, and now the college. My time coaching the boys’ tennis team at Lake High School was a dream. Obviously having the opportunity to coach my son, as well as being a part of the school’s first Federal League Championship in tennis this year was very special. I'm looking forward to carrying on the winning tradition at Walsh University as they transition into the NCAA II and a very competitive conference in the GLIAC.”
Bryan resides in Lake Township with his son Ross (senior at Lake).
