Career Opportunities

English majors pursue careers as teachers, writers (technical and creative), editors, publishers, reporters, research assistants and analysts, radio and television commentators, human resource managers, corporate special events coordinators, librarians, travel, literary and booking agents, bookstore managers, advertising copy writers, public relations directors, lobbyists and congressional aides, fundraisers, paralegals, and cryptologists. Because of its emphasis on reading and writing skills, an English major or minor complements a variety of other majors. Students with strong English backgrounds consistently perform better on law and medical school standardized tests, in a corporate setting which emphasizes text analysis and writing, in careers such as counseling where interpersonal and documentation skills are important, and in graduate programs in the humanities, library science, education, communication, business and the social sciences.
