Walsh Team Wins 2012 Regional CFA Investment Research Challenge

What's New, 2012-03-15

The Walsh University DeVille School of Business student team recently earned first place in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society of Cleveland 2012 Regional Investment Research Challenge, an intercollegiate competition of which the original field consisted of student teams from Ashland University, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, University of Findlay, John Carroll University, Hiram College and Walsh University. During the competition, students from the participating universities work directly with an actual client on an investment research project and prepare a company analysis. Each team's final presentation is evaluated by a high profile panel consisting of heads of research, portfolio managers, and chief investment officers from area firms.

Student teams spent months to prepare and submit in February a written "sell side" analyst report on local corporate giant RPM International, Inc., a world leader in specialty coatings and sealants. On March 3 the student teams gave a slide presentation to CFA Judges and fielded numerous questions. The Walsh team, led by Adjunct Professor of Investments Michael May, included Monica Ursick, Anna Grismer, Eric Pound and Dustin Dorris.Team Walsh's CFA mentor was Nicholas E. Mitchell, CFA/CMT, Senior Vice President of Research, Northcoast Research of Cleveland Ohio. This was the third year Walsh competed in the global competition that provides hands-on experience mentored by experts in the investment profession.

Teams from Ashland University, Cleveland State University, the University of Findlay and Walsh University competed this year for the opportunity to travel to New York for the Americas Regional Finals (among 48 local societies) to be held on April 10th. The winner of the Americas Regional will compete in New York for the overall title on April 11th in the Global Final, going against the winners from the New York Region, Asia-Pacific and EMEA.

The 2012 Walsh University Team will represent the CFA Society Cleveland Region at the National Competition to be held in New York City on April 10, 2012.
