C.H.D. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION

BSC 560 Introduction to Counseling and the Counseling Profession 3 sem. hrs.
Introduction to counseling and interviewing techniques and processes. Examines stages and strategies in the counseling process; application of selected counseling theories to case situations; counseling specialty areas; and legal, ethical and professional issues in counseling and interviewing. Includes an intensive laboratory focused on developing interviewing skills and mastering coun sel ing procedures. This is a foundational course. It must be taken within the first 2 semesters following admission.

CHD 602 Research Methods and Program Evaluation 3 sem. hrs.
An overview of statistical concepts and methods used in the behavioral sciences. Included are descriptive and inferential statistics with particular reference to hypothesis testing, analysis, evaluation and interpretation of statistical data, and use of computers to analyze the data. This is a beginning level course.

CHD 603 Interpretation of Psychological Testing 3 sem. hrs.
The use and interpretation of standardized psychometric instruments in counseling. Analysis of clients in counseling interviews and of students in group situations through the integration of test scores, cumulative record data, and other sources of information. Practice in the administration and interpretation of standardized instruments appraising intelligence, aptitude, vocational interest, achievement, and adjustment. Introduction to basic statistical methods for interpreting scores, constructing local norms, and predicting client success. This is a beginning level course.

CHD 605 Foundations and Dimensions of School Counseling 3 sem. hrs.
This foundational course provides both a historical perspective on the career of school counseling as well as an overview of the dimensions of the guidance and counseling services offered in a comprehensive developmental guidance program. Through both didactic and experiential methods, students will be exposed to the fundamentals required of school counselors. This is a beginning level course.

CHD 610 Principles, Techniques, and Theories of Counseling and Development 3 sem. hrs.
A study of selected theories of counseling and psychotherapy. Application of specific techniques to human problems. Development of a personal philosophy of counseling and the use of that philosophy in applied settings. This is a beginning level course.

CHD 612 Lifespan Development and Adjustment 3 sem. hrs.
Lifespan development and analysis of predictable conflicts and crises associated with various stages in life. Physical, psychosexual, cognitive, emotional, and social development from conception to death. This is a beginning level course.

CHD 624 Career Counseling 3 sem. hrs.
Types and sources of information about careers and education. Selected theories of career development, appraisal, and counseling that aid the process of vocationalization. Use of information for intelligent vocational exploration on the part of the student, self-system and career, life stages and developmental choices in career patterns. Personal, family, social, and educational factors which bear upon the psychological development of a career. CHD 603 recommended.

CHD 626 Group Process 3 sem. hrs.
The group as a unique medium of implementing the counseling process. An introduction to the basic issues of group leadership, group membership, group dynamics and process, and the application of group theory as related to counseling and development. Learning is facilitated through an experiential model and an interpersonal lab is required.Prerequisite: CHD 610.This is an intermediate level course.

CHD 633 Marriage and Family Counseling 3 sem. hrs.
An overview of theories and treatment strategies in marriage and family therapy. Course provides an introduction to the field of family therapy and to the application of systems theory to the understanding and treatment of human problems. Also considers family development and cultural and gender issues in the practice of family counseling. CHD 610 and 612 strongly recommended.This is an intermediate level course.

CHD 635 Dynamics of Chemical Dependency 3 sem. hrs.
Course presents the bio-psycho-social approach to the etiology, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of substance abuse/dependence. Includes application of counseling theories and techniques in chemical dependency counseling as well as an overview of treatment stages and environments. Examines the impact of chemical dependency on the family and the role of self-help groups in the recovery process. CHD 610 and 612 strongly recommended. This is an intermediate level course.

CHD 662 Individual Study: Counseling and Development 1-3 sem. hrs.
Individually tailored library research, laboratory research, or field research undertaken by the student under the supervision of an appropriate faculty member(s). Intended for the student whose research interests are so specialized as to warrant a separate course specifically oriented around those interests. Offered every semester.

CHD 730 Social and Cultural Diversity in Counseling 3 sem. hrs.
Topics covered include discussions on the importance of the counselor's awareness of the client's background. Racial/ethnic as well as socioeconomic diversity and its implications in the counseling situation will be considered. Several currently used models will be presented to help counselors face their ethnocentricity and develop competencies needed to work with a wide variety of clients. Prerequisite:CHD 602.This is an advanced level course.

CHD 740 Ethics and Issues in Counseling and Development 3 sem. hrs.
Topics or trends of critical concern to the counselor are covered as well as ethical codes for counseling and school counseling. Standards for professional practice and issues related to delivery of counseling services are emphasized in this course. Prerequisite: CHD602. This is an advanced level course.

CLINICAL INTERVENTION COURSES (CHD 751-770)
Courses specifically designed as in-depth study of particular methods/strategies in clinical counseling with close study of a specific approach or population.

CHD 751 Grief Therapy 3 sem. hrs.
The goal of this course is to foster an intellectual and personal encounter with the subject of loss and grief and to enhance counseling skills and teach intervention strategies for specific populations experiencing death, dying and other losses. Next offering TBA.

CHD 752 Trauma Assessment/Treatment 3 sem. hrs.
The focus of this course is on abused populations and treatment processes. Students will learn the dynamics displayed by all members of an abusive system. Using families in which child abuse occurs as a model, similarities and differences between the model and other trauma populations will be explored. Such populations include physical abuse and neglect, domestic violence, and rape. Students will learn to recognize indicators which might suggest abuse and be introduced to a variety of intervention components and modalities. Legal proceedings and concerns will also be addressed. CHD 753 Relational Cultural Therapy 3 sem. hrs.
This interactive format course will explore assessment and application of The Women's Relational Development Model developed by the Stone Center at Wellesley College to clinical practice. Students will read primary sources of information such as articles and books. Lecture, case presentations, class discussions and applications for the model will be covered. Class assignments have been designed to provide students with an opportunity to experience using the model. Next offering TBA.

CHD 754 Psychopharmacology 3 sem. hrs.
This course is designed for the non-medical therapist who is interested in learning more about how psychoactive medications work within the human body. Major groups of drugs covered include those typically prescribed in psychiatric medicine, commonly abused drugs including: street drugs, over the counter drugs, and others (coffee, nicotine, alcohol, etc.). The foci of the course are mechanisms of action, behavioral effects, and side effects of psychotropic drugs. Next offering TBA.

CHD 755 Supervision and Consultation 3 sem. hrs.
This course provides students with the opportunity to explore supervision theories, develop supervision skills, and explore ethical issues of supervision. The course will utilize both didactic and experiential instructional methods and provide major resources of the supervision field to assist students in becoming supervisors. Ethical issues in supervision will also be addressed. Next offering TBA.

CHD 756 Art Therapy 3 sem. hrs.
This course covers the history and philosophy of Art Therapy and its relationship to other therapies. The power, strength and practicality of the therapeutic use of art will be discovered through experiential ("hands-on") art experiences. The ability to apply the basic principles will be gained through this course. Next offering TBA.

CHD 757 Couples Therapy 3 sem. hrs.
This course has been designed to teach skills in identifying and tracking patterns of interaction in a dyad. Students will become familiar with effective interventions for changing couple interaction. Current literature in couples therapy will be reviewed, including theory, research and techniques. Students will learn to identify links between learning in the family of origin and functioning in current relationships. Next offering TBA.

CHD 758 Childhood and Adolescent Treatment Approaches 3 sem. hrs.
The course covers clinical management of common problems with children and adolescents. Issues such as suicide, sex offending, child abuse and neglect, oppositional/conduct disorders, developmental tasks, as well as legal/ethical issues, will be covered. Assessment, service planning and building a community-based system of care will be described based on current research literature. Lecture, journal articles, videotape and role-play are all used as part of instruction. Next offering TBA.

CHD 759 Gestalt Methods of Intervention 3 sem. hrs.
This course is designed for clinicians who want to learn the uses of Gestalt methods in their counseling practice. Conceptual issues are covered, but the main focus of the course will be the design and application of interventions based on Gestalt therapy and therapeutic methodology. Students are expected to apply information from this course to themselves or to suitable clients from their caseload. Next offering TBA.

CHD 760 School Counseling in the 21st Century 3 sem. hrs.
Topics and trends in response to current social changes, socioeconomic pressures, and world events which influence the changing direction of school counseling programs will be addressed. This course is designed as a useful source of information for students pursuing school counseling licensure as well as a resource for professional school counselors in the process of self-renewal.

CHD 761 Play Therapy 3 sem. hrs.
This course provides students with the basic assumptions underlying play therapy as a therapeutic intervention, symbolic meaning of toys, and therapeutic value of their use; child intake skills with an emphasis on play sessions, stages of play therapy, and issues for each stage, construction and use of a herapeutic metaphor with children in a play context. Ethical issues in play therapy with children are also addressed. Next offering TBA.

CHD 762 Eating Disorders 3 sem. hrs
This course will prepare clinicians to recognize, diagnose, and treat eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and related disorders. Societal, biological, familial, trauma, and psychological factors contributing to eating disorders will be examined. Societal pressure for thinness that contributes to eating disorders will be discussed. Next offering TBA.

CHD 763 Wellness 3 sem. hrs.
This course provides an overview of a holistic approach to health and the effects of stress on the mind and body. Wellness models are presented. Students are expected to determine their own level of wellness, explore sources of stress, and develop more effective coping responses. Techniques are presented for treatment of stress symptoms. CHD 764 Motivational Counseling 3 sem. hrs.
Provides an introduction to the basic principles and interventions of motivational interviewing and stages of change theory; and explores counseling applications with substance abusers, difficult-to-treat and delinquent teens, criminal justice clients, and dual diagnosis clients. Incorporates experiential practice of techniques. Next offering TBA.

CHD 766 Management of School Guidance 3 sem. hrs.
This course is designed to prepare for the organization, implementation, coordination, and administration of counseling, testing, consulting, and guidance services provided in single and/or multiple school assignments by school counselors. Legal and ethical issues related to school counselor decisions and guidance functions will be studied.

CHD 772 Advanced Abnormal Behavior 3 sem. hrs.
Survey of all forms of abnormal behavior with each group of disorders covered from various theoretical viewpoints, including psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic/existential, and biological. Further coverage includes delineation of symptoms, etiology, developmental course of the disorders, treatment modalities, and prognosis. Prerequisites: At least eight CHD 600 level courses.

CHD 775 Diagnosis of Mental and Emotional Behavior 3 sem. hrs.
Course is designed to help students with knowledge of abnormal behavior develop skills in making diagnostic decisions. In-depth study of diagnostic categories listed in the DSM III is the focus. Students are expected to develop detailed knowledge of symptoms for the diagnostic categories and become familiar with research on clinical diagnosis. In addition, the student
learns necessary interviewing skills for conducting mental status evaluations. Prerequisite: CHD 771 or 772.

CHD 777 Treatment of Mental and Emotional Disorders 3 sem. hrs.
This course is designed to help students with knowledge of diagnosis of abnormal behavior is designed to help them develop skills in planning and implementing appropriate treatment. Focus is on in-depth study of research literature on effective treatment for diagnostic groups. Students are responsible for literature review and preparation of treatment plans for diagnostic groups to prepare them for independent practice. Prerequisite: CHD 775.

CHD 780 Personality Assessment 3 sem. hrs.
Use and interpretation of standardized psychometric instruments in evaluation of individuals. Individual and group administration of assessment instruments measuring mental ability, aptitude, interest, and personality. Use of assessment batteries, their scoring and interpretation, and the application of results to explain individual functioning. Prerequisites: CHD 602, CHD 603, and 772.

CHD 790A (790 B and 790 C Dual Specialization) ) Practicum: School Counseling 3 sem. hrs.
Intensive counseling experiences with individual and group supervision. Emphasis is on developing the therapeutic relationship, counseling procedures, ethical practice and the application of counseling theories to various client concerns. Course focuses on assisting counselor trainees to improve individual and group counseling skills. Prerequisites: CHD 610, 626, 740, and eight additional CHD courses. School counselors may not need CHD 772, 775, 777 & 780. Offered every semester.

CHD 795 Internship in School Counseling 3 sem. hrs.
Supervised field assignment in application of theory to counseling practice with individuals, groups, children, or adolescents in a school setting. This is an advanced level course. Prerequisites: CHD 790 and its prerequisites.

CHD 796 I & 796 II Internship in Mental Health Counseling I & II 3 sem. hrs. each
Designed as capstone of clinical training, this is a performance-based course in which students must demonstrate their competence in diagnosis and treatment planning in an approved clinical setting (clinic, private practice, hospital, etc.). Emphasis is on the application of academic training and skills with clients. Evaluation of demonstrated skills is made through close supervision by an on-site supervisor and the instructor. Prerequisite CHD 790 and its prerequisites.
