MEN'S BASKETBALL: 10th Ranked Cavs (7-2, 3-0) Extend Win Streak to Five; Remain Perfect in AMC

NAIA No. 10 and defending national champion Walsh (7-2, 3-0) extended its winning streak to five games, and remained perfect in the American Mideast Conference South Division with two wins last week.  First, Walsh defeated Shawnee State University in an AMC South Division contest on Wednesday and then dumped Urbana University in another AMC battle on Saturday.   This week the Cavs travel to Malone College for the annual Hoops for Healing Classic.  All proceeds benefit the American Liver Foundation.  Tickets are available at the door.

Walsh won its fourth straight game defeating Shawnee State University 81-70 last Wednesday.  Walsh fell behind early at 12-5, but went on a 15-point run to take a 22-12 lead with 6:33 to play in the half.  The Cavs held the Bears scoreless for 8:03 during the run, but would lead only 31-29 at the half.  Walsh extended its lead to 41-34 early in the second half, but Shawnee rallied and tied the game at 45 with 12:09 to play. There would be three ties in the second half, with the last coming at 52.  The Bears only lead of the half came at 54-52 with 9:11 to play.  Walsh regained the lead for good on a Corey Jones (So., Avon Lake, OH/Akron Saint Vincent-Saint Mary) three-pointer at 55-54 with 8:41 left.  The Bears would close to within three-points at 62-59 with 5:26 to play, but would get no closer.  Walsh placed five players in double figures and shot .692 from the field in the second half.  Jones led the Cavs with 20 points.  Adam Lesch (Jr., Newark, OH/HS) and Eder Araujo (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Odete Maria de Freitas) each tallied 16 points and Cleiton Sebastiao (Sr., Santa Luzia, Brazil/Colegio Brasieleiro Dia) posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Jason Hicks (Jr., Cleveland, OH/Villa Angela St. Joseph) added 12 points and five assists.  Shawnee's Terrence Davison led all scorers with 32 points.

Walsh won its fifth straight game, defeating Urbana University (5-6, 2-1) 91-75 on Saturday.  After trailing 5-0, and 7-2, Walsh rallied and took the lead for good at 19-18 on a Brandon Weems (So., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) jumper with 8:44 left in the first half and led 44-33 at halftime.  The second half was all Walsh, as they out scored the Blue Knights 47-42.  The Cavs scored the first ten points of the second half and led 54-33, before the Blue Knights scored at the 15:24 mark.  Walsh would lead by as many as 23 points (62-39, 64-41) in the final 20 minutes.  The Cavs balanced attack placed five players in double figures.  Jason Hicks led the Cavs with 17 points.  Corey Jones added 16, Adam Lesch 12 and Eder Araujo and Cleiton Sebastiao each scored 11 points.  Weems dished out eight assists and had eight rebounds, as Walsh out rebounded Urbana 42-30.  

The Cavs meet King College, out of Bristol, TN on Friday in the first game of the Hoops for Healing Classic at Malone College.  It is the first meeting between the two teams.  King is a member of the NAIA and the Appalachian Athletic Conference.  They stand 7-6 overall and have lost their last two games.  Game time is 6 pm.  Walsh meets AMC North Division foe Seton Hill on Saturday.  The Griffins are 5-3 and beat Geneva 75-54 on Saturday.  This is also Walsh's first meeting ever with Seton Hill (PA).  Game time is 1 pm.

Walsh's balanced scoring attack has three players in double figures.  Eder Araujo is averaging 16.2 points and 7.0 rebounds and is shooting .635 from the field and .591 from three-point.  Corey Jones is averaging 14.2 points and shooting .929 from the foul line and .481 from three-point.  Jason Hicks is averaging 12.8 points.  The Cavs are averaging 77.8 points and giving up 64.9 points per game.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Walsh Evens Overall Mark with Two-Game Win Streak

Walsh extended its modest winning streak to two games, with an 88-80 American Mideast Conference South Division win over Urbana University.  In the process, the Cavs pulled even at 4-4 overall and to 2-1 in the AMC South.  This week, in their only game, they travel to Georgetown College (KY) on Tuesday for a 6 pm tip-off.

Walsh shot .621 from the field in the first half in building a 40-30 halftime lead in their win over Urbana.   In the second half, the Cavs led by as many as 19 points (65-46).  Urbana would cut the lead four points at 84-80 with 27 seconds left, but would get no closer.  Walsh placed four players in double figures, led by Dionna Hammett's (Sr., Warrensville Heights, OH/St. Peter Chanel) 23 points.  LeAnne Ware (Sr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) scored 16 points, Ingrid Brainard (Jr., Madison, OH/HS) 14 and Lindsay Becherucci (Sr., Massillon, OH/Washington) 10.  Brainard also added nine rebounds and seven assists. 

Walsh and Georgetown meet in the Blue Grass state on Tuesday.  The Tigers are 7-2 and have won their last three games.  They have beaten AMC South powers Shawnee State (92-84) and Cedarville (97-93).  This will be the fifth meeting between the schools, with Georgetown holding a 3-1 advantage.  Walsh won the last game played between the two schools, 68-64, in 2003-04.

Walsh is averaging 74.6 points and has four players in double figures.   Dionna Hammett has taken over the scoring lead and is averaging 13.2 points and a team leading 8.0 rebounds.  Beth Sternberg (Sr., East Canton, OH/HS) is averaging 13.1 points.  LeAnne Ware is averaging 11.1 points, as is Ingrid Brainard.  Brainard also leads the team in assists with 43.
