Dr. Michael Dunphy Honored as Walsh Outstanding Educator of the Year

Chair of the Division of Mathematics and Sciences Dr. Michael Dunphy was recently named "Outstanding Educator of the Year" at Walsh University's Honors Convocation on Sunday, March 25. This honor is given annually by Walsh students who vote to select the recipient.

Dr. Michael Dunphy has a remarkable and diverse background as an educator, international speaker, published author and seasoned business consultant. He inspires people to overcome obstacles, reset expectations and engage in opportunities to optimize themselves for success in business and in life.

His formal academic education includes a B.A. in Chemistry from Walsh College, an M.S in Chemistry from Youngstown State University and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Akron.

In 1981, Dr. Dunphy joined Walsh as a part-time faculty member, a position he held until 1985 when he was hired as a full-time Assistant Professor of Chemistry.

In 1988, Dr. Dunphy began his first commercial/entrepreneurial venture, opening the Center for the MartialArts in Akron, Ohio. The school was a huge success, and Dr. Dunphy learned the fundamentals of starting and running a successful and profitable business. During this time, he also began studying business strategies, leadership systems, conflict management methods and teambuilding tactics, while doing public speaking as often as possible. In 1990, Dr. Dunphy completed his doctoral studies in biochemistry, was promoted to Associate Professor of Biochemistry at Walsh, earned tenure and was promoted to Department Chair of the Natural Sciences at Walsh College. In 2000, Dr. Dunphy initiated Mike Dunphy Enterprises with his partner Dr. Dan Passerini (class of 1994) and left academia to pursue full-time speaking and facilitating. In 2004, Dr. Dunphy returned to Walsh University and was re-instated as Professor of Biochemistry and Division Chair for Math & Sciences.

Currently, Dr. Dunphy actively teaches martial arts, serves in his university teaching and leadership roles and is one of the most sought after speakers in leadership, conflict management and teambuilding in business and academia.
