Self Assessment - If you are having trouble making a decision about what you want to do after graduation:

  • Schedule an appointment with the Career Center to take the Holland Skills Assessment 
  • Research Reading Materials like "What Color is Your Parachute?"
  • Occupational Outlook Handbook  good resource for assessment to find what you would like to be)
  • Job Search http://online.onetcenter.org (good resource for the section ONET) 
  • Link to the Vault Reports to get the scoop on internships, company information, hot career options and job search questions.

FRESHMAN YEAR - RECOMMENDED

  • Participate in career exploration events.
  • Explore new subjects and activities.
  • Begin establishing good rapport with professors.
  • Focus on getting the grades you'll need to compete for jobs and graduate school.
  • Investigate career fields that interest you through the Career Center or other resources (e.g. internet).
  • Join organizations - seek a variety of volunteer and leadership opportunities.
  • Begin compiling your list of contacts.
  • Begin to formulate a resume
  • Investigate experiential learning opportunities (e.g. internships, externships). 

SOPHOMORE YEAR - MANDATORY

  • Select your major (if you haven't already)
  • Revisit assessments (if needed)
  • Begin compiling professional portfolio
  • Attend interviewing workshops if you interview at on-campus recruiting events
  • Develop your reference file
  • Update resume and cover letter
  • Establish a FREE account with the Career Center resume and referral system (Walsh Career Network)
  • When requesting Career Center assistance with experiential learning, be familiar with the process

RECOMMENDED

  • Update contact list
  • Commit to your major field
  • Continue various shadowing experiences
  • Research and apply for internships or summer/part time jobs
  • Explore opportunities for Global Learning
  • Continue maintaining contact with professors
  • Check Career Center Database (Walsh Career Network)

JUNIOR YEAR - MANDATORY

  • Continue updating resume and cover letter
  • Attend interviewing workshops if you plan to interview at on-campus recruiting events
  • Update professional portfolio
  • Update professor reference list for portfolio

RECOMMENDED

  • Update contact list
  • Research and apply for career related internships and summer jobs
  • Attend job fairs for practice
  • Become a leader in a student or volunteer organization
  • Continue to develop rapport with professors
  • Network with professors, employers, alumni, friends, and family
  • Check the Career Center database for upcoming events and updates

If Applicable:

  • Explore Graduate School options
  • Attend Grad School Fairs
  • Begin  Grad School testing process

SENIOR YEAR - MANDATORY

  • Continue to update your resume and professional portfolio
  • Continue to evaluate your values, interests, skills and goals
  • View mid-year and final GPA (major and overall) on Cavalier Center website

RECOMMENDED

  • Buy interview attire (or put on your Christmas list)
  • Continue networking with new and former contact
  • Become familiar with reference letter protocol
  • Schedule as many recruiting interviews to meet your professional goals
  • Narrow your graduate school choices (by fall of senior year)
  • Apply to graduate schools (may require references, tests, personal statements, or applications)
  • Apply for jobs and yearlong internships and fellowship
  • Attend advertised job fairs
  • Check with the Career Center for opportunity updates
