Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What majors are offered in the Communication program?
The Program offers majors in communication and corporate communication. The communication major is designed as a pre-professional program, and offers three loosely organized tracks-advertising and public relations, broadcasting, and print journalism. The corporate communication major is a joint program with the Business Department and includes coursework in both communication and business.
Q2: What is the difference between the corporate communication major and the communication major?
The corporate communication major is a unique program that prepares students to perform communication functions within business organizations. It offers students an opportunity to gain skills in both business and communication. While both programs place a heavy stress on writing and professional skills, the communication major is designed to be more flexible, and can include coursework that would be applicable to a number of different vocations.
Q3: What can I do with a communication major?
Graduates of Walsh's communication program can be found working as newspaper reporters and television journalists. Many work in advertising or public relations. Our curriculum is designed to foster a diverse skill set, and many of our majors who have chosen not work in the field have found success in other areas, including sales, marketing, teaching and coaching, and restaurant management.
Q4: How can Walsh students gain professional experience?
We offer both practicums and internships. The Communication Department sponsors two co-curricular activities-The Spectator student newspaper, and WCAV Campus radio where students can hone their skills. Both communication and corporate communication students are strongly encouraged to get at least one professional internship in their junior or senior year.
