Examine Ugandan history, traditions, social institutions, and present challenges for development in this serivce and relection-oriented immersion experience.

 

Dates: May 8- May 26, 2010 (tentative)

 

Program Cost: $3,000 (This covers program fee, airfare, lodging, meanls, and ground transportation). *As part of the Global Learning Summer Tuition Policy, students may earn 6 credits at no additional cost as long as these credits are assumed as part of their fall 2010 semester 18-credit course load.

 

Faculty Director: Dr. Penny Bove (Sociology), Dr. Jo Anne Kelly (Sociology), and Dean Amay Malska (Student Affairs)

 

Courses offered:
SOC 490-1 Uganda Experience (H2b and Diversity)

SOC 206-A Cross-Cultural Issues in Education (T1, Diversity, and Service Learning)

 

Students may enroll in two 3-credit courses while in Uganda. Walsh students will take classes alongside Ugandan students in the mornings, while spending afternoons on site visits.

 

Site Visits: Meeting Point International, Shrine of the Partyrs, Kasubi Tombs, Source of the Nile, African Craft Village, Kisubi Hospital, MildMay AIDS Treatment Center, Mbabaali Memorial School, and Ndere Troupe  

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Successfully completed one semester at Walsh (12 credit hours)
  • 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Good standing with Student Affairs and Academic Affairs

 

Students requesting an exception must follow these steps:

  • Write a formal letter to Dr. Mark Rogers, Director of International Learning, requesting an exception and explaining how the program will benefit the student academically and personally
  • Obtain a letter from the faculty advisor or another professor in support of the student’s participation and vouching for the student’s ability to complete the coursework

 

The Director of Global Learning will inform you if your exception has been granted.
