Internships at Walsh

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) 2012 survey, approximately 63 percent of college graduates who took part in paid internships received at least one job offer. In addition, in a survey from Marketplace and The Chronicle of Higher Education, employers said that internships are the most important thing they look for when evaluating a recent college graduate. In fact, internship experience ranks higher than where students went to college, their major or their grade point average.

Experiential learning has long been a valuable component of a Walsh education, but the University is taking it to the next level with increased emphasis on internships and practical experience across all majors. Numerous internships and other workforce preparedness opportunities are available through Walsh's Career Center located in the David Campus Center.

Examples of the hands-on work in which Walsh students are participating include:

Education
All Education majors complete structured in-classroom training in the form of field and clinical experiences (student teaching) with our school district partners.

Museum Studies
In addition to the on-campus experience of curating shows at Walsh's Birk Center for the Arts, Museum Studies students take a two-semester sequence of supervised museum internships off-campus during their Junior year. Recent placement include the Canton Museum of Art, Massillon Museum, Professional Football Hall of Fame and the McKinley Museum and Library, just to name a few.

Chemistry
Through the newly redesigned Chemistry curriculum at Walsh, students explore post-graduation work opportunities through integrated lab experiences. The department has developed relationships with more than 70 regional companies to provide students internship and experiential learning opportunities.

Biology and Biochemisty
Walsh has a strong undergraduate research program for Biology and Biochemistry majors. Students have gained experience working with Walsh faculty to research everything from cancer to the effects of the hormone relaxin on coronary artery dysfunction. In addition, Walsh students have completed a variety of internships , including the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in the Center for Conservation and Biodiversity.

Nursing
Clinical experience is a vital component of the Byers School of Nursing. Walsh students complete their clinical practice in a variety of hospitals and community-based healthcare facilities in the Canton-Akron area, and many of them find employment at the site of their clinical experience after graduation.

Business
The DeVille School of Business offers students a variety of mentoring programs, including one program that pairs students with business professionals who provide guidance and support. Many times these relationships lead to business internships and potential jobs post-graduation.

Government and Foreign Affairs
Government and Foreign Affairs students are encouraged to apply for internships within a department of local, state or national government. In addition, there are opportunities to work and learn in Washington, D.C., through the Washington Center. Most recently, the department has launched the James B. Renacci Government Scholars Program. Through scholarships and internships, the program provides students greater access to learn how the U.S. government operates.

International Relations
In addition to requiring students to participate in a global learning experience, the International Relations major also includes an internship in Washington, D.C. at a government agency or an internship with an international organization or embassy.

Psychology
Psychology internships are arranged on an individual basis by an internship advisor. Psychology majors often intern in group homes, domestic violence shelters, drug and rehabilitation centers, schools, child and adolescent service agencies and other types of intervention centers.

Sociology
Sociology majors gain hands-on experience during their senior year through either an internship or original research project.

Counseling and Human Development
In addition to seeing community clients at Walsh's on-site counseling center, students in the Master of Arts in Counseling and Human Development program also have the opportunity to gain international experience in Uganda or to intern in different areas such as community service/mental health agencies, school-based intervention and treatment settings, crisis intervention centers, and more.
