MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs (10-5, 4-1) Tied for First Place in AMC South/Host Malone Next
Walsh (10-5, 4-1) swept two American Mideast Conference South games last week and are now tied for first place with NAIA No. 3 Cedarville University (14-4, 4-1 AMC S) and Ohio Dominican University (11-3, 4-1 AMC S). This week, the Cavs renew their long-standing rivalry with Malone College, at home on Tuesday (8 pm) and travel to the University of Rio Grande (7:30 pm) on Saturday. The Cavs have won their last three games. Both games will be aired live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.
The Cavs won their second straight game, defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene 66-64 on the road last Tuesday. Walsh held the Cougars to just ten field goals in the second half and to .385 from the field for the game. The Cavs received solid nights from Rob Whaley (Sr., Benton Harbor, MI/HS) and Randy Sistrunk (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley). Whaley led all scorers with 22 points, while hauling down 13 rebounds. Sistrunk added 16 points and matched Whaley's 13 rebounds. Walsh extended its modest win streak to three games, with an 85-68 win over Wilberforce on Saturday. Everyone played in one of the Cavs most impressive performances of the year. Corey Jones (Fr., Avon Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St,. Mary) led the Cavs with 15 points. Jones averaged 12.5 points in the Cavs two wins and connected on 5-12 three-pointers. He is averaging 11.8 points and leads the team with 39 three-pointers. Rob Whaley added ten points and Randy Sistrunk pulled down eight rebounds. Sistrunk leads the Cavs in rebounding (8.5) and is second in scoring (12.3). Whaley leads the Cavs in scoring (17.0) and is second in rebounding (7.2).
Walsh and Malone (11-6, 2-3 AMC S) meet for the 89th time on Tuesday. The Cavs lead the all-time series 50-38 and have won ten of the last eleven meetings. The teams split the two games last year. They will meet in the annual Mayor's Cup game on February 8 at Malone. The Pioneers come into Tuesday's game with wins in five of their last seven games. They were defeated at Rio Grande, 94-81 on Saturday. Malone is led by the AMC's top scorer, Shane Conwell, who is averaging 23.6 points per game. Earlier in the season, Conwell exploded for 46 points against Ohio Dominican. The Pioneers also have Chris Miller averaging over 20 points per game at 20.4. Walsh and Rio Grande meet for the 73rd at Rio on Saturday. The Redmen lead the all-time series 43-29 and won both meetings last year. The Redmen are fresh off a 94-81 win over Malone on Saturday. They host Wilberforce University on Tuesday. The Redmen started the season by winning their first seven games. They have four players in double figures, led by Sean Plummer, who is averaging 11.5 points.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs (8-7, 2-3) On The Move in AMC South/Malone Next
After losing five straight games in December, the Cavs (8-7, 2-3) have rebounded to win three of their last four games, as they get ready for archrival Malone College (5:30 pm) on Tuesday. The Cavs host the Pioneers on Tuesday, and travel to the University of Rio Grande. The Cavs garnered two AMC South Division wins (Mount Vernon Nazarene, Wilberforce) last week to climb out of the cellar.
The Cavs played one of their finest games to date, in winning 84-58 at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday. The Cavs shot a blistering .583 in the second half to pull away from the Cougars. Dionna Hammett (Jr., Warrensville Hts., OH/St. Peter Chanel) recorded her second straight double double by scoring 19 points and pulling down a game-high 17 rebounds. Beth Sternberg (Jr., East Canton, OH/HS) led the Cavs with 22 points, while LeAnne Ware (Jr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) and Jessica Douglas (So., Cambridge, OH/HS) each added 12 points. The Cavs won their second straight AMC South game, with a 78-71 come-from-behind win over visiting Wilberforce on Saturday. The Cavs used a 47-point second half to record the win. Walsh trailed 36-31 at the half, but outscored the Bulldogs 47-35 in the final 20 minutes. Walsh trailed by as many as nine points (60-51) with 11:38 to play and trailed by seven points (65-58) with 6:25 to play. They took the lead for good at 69-67, with 3:20 to play on a basket from Dionna Hammett. Walsh used a balanced attack, placing five players in double figures, led by Ingrid Brainard (So., Madison, OH/HS) and Jessica Douglass, who scored 15 points each. Hammett scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Jessy Fye (Sr., Canton, OH/Perry) added 11 points.
Dionna Hammett leads the Cavs in scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg) and is shooting a team best .521 from the field. Beth Sternberg is second is scoring (11.9 ppg) and Ingrid Brainard (So., Madison, OH/HS) is third (10.1 ppg). Brainard also leads the team in assists with 61.
Walsh and Malone (9-7, 2-3 AMC S) renew their rivalry on Tuesday. Walsh has won the last four meetings, but trail 28-24 in the all-time series. Malone has won six of their last nine games, but lost 63-60 at Rio Grande on Saturday. Michelle Ling leads the Pioneers in scoring, averaging 21.5 ppg. Nikki Parson is averaging 19.0 ppg. The game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us. The Cavs travel south to meet NAIA No. 17 Rio Grande (15-4, 4-1) on Saturday. The Redwomen are tied for second place in the AMC South with Shawnee State (4-1) and are one-half game behind South leader Cedarville (5-1). Rio has won three straight and seven of their last nine games, including a 63-60 win over Malone on Saturday. They host Daemen on Tuesday. Alkia Fountain leads the team in scoring with a 10.6 ppg. Rio is allowing only 61.6 points per contest. The Cavs have won four of the last five meetings, but trail in the all-time series 26-15.
