Laura MacKenzie and Gary Rue in Concert, Nov.13

What's New, 2011-11-07

Walsh University's Artists and Lecturers Series will present the highly original duo, Laura MacKenzie and Gary Rue in concert on Sunday, November 13 at 7:30 pm in the Betzler Auditorium, 2020 East Maple Street, North Canton.Located on the Walsh University North Canton campus, Betzler Auditorium is best accessed off Market Avenue with parking directly behind Betzler Hall.

The MacKenzie and Rue performances are rooted in tradition, presenting a rich tapestry of Celtic and other folk music. MacKenzie's Scottish heritage led her to play traditional music at dances in the Minnesota Irish-American community and to become recognized by the Minnesota State Arts Board as a Master Folk Artist. She is a founding member of the Mooncoin Ceili Dancers, has been a production assistant and performer for "A Prairie Home Companion" and "Voices of Minnesota." As a solo artist, Laura has been awarded a McKnight Foundation Performing Arts Fellowship and a 2009 Bush Foundation Artists Fellowship.

Laura plays an array of wind-powered instruments, including flutes, whistles, concertina, gemshorn, unusual bagpipes both bellowed and blown, and voice. With his full-throated, melodic guitar style and vocal contributions, Gary Rue perfectly complements MacKenzie's musical prowess with his own rich background of artistry and composition.
