Majors/Minors

The English major is a 36-semester hour program with an emphasis on literary studies, although nine hours are devoted specifically to writing and language development. The program emphasizes the analysis and the production of texts. Students develop the ability to produce effective work independently (such as essays, research and position papers, professional or technical reports, short fiction or poetry) and to interpret the novels, plays, poetry, and short stories that comprise the literature of the U.S. and the world. To complement other fields of study, English offers two 18-semester hour minors, one in literature and one in writing where students may concentrate on professional, technical or creative writing.
