MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs (28-6, 15-3 AMC S) Cavs Fall in Sweet 16

Walsh's (28-6, 15-3 AMC S) dream of a national championship ended, when they were defeated in the second round of the NAIA National Championships last Friday in Point Lookout, MO.  After downing King College (TN) 78-69 in the opening game of the tournament on March 7, the Cavs fell 78-56 to Cornerstone University in the "Sweet 16."  The Cavs 28 wins are the most since 1995-96, when they reached the Final Four, and went 31-5 under the late Steve Loy.  The 28 wins do represent the most under current Head Coach Jeff Young.  Under Young, the Cavs won the national championship in 2005, reached the Elite 8 last year and Sweet 16 this year.  His three-year record stands at 83-25, good for a .769 winning percentage, best in Walsh history.

Brandon Weems (Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St Mary) and Corey Jones (Jr., Avon Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) combined for 28 points in Walsh's opening round win, with each scoring 14 points.  Weems also handed out 10 assists, to become Walsh's all-time single season assist leader.  He finished the year with 237, breaking the mark of 222 set by Bob Boldon in 1995-96.  Weems finishes the season as the NAIA's leader in assist per game, with 7.4 per game.  He is the first Cavalier to lead the NAIA in any offensive category.  The Cavs bench played a big part in the win scoring 25 points.  Brandon Speck (Fr., Mansfield, OH/St. Peter's) hit four three-pointers and finished with 12 points, while Derek Chappell (Sr., Cleveland, OH/Lutheran East) tallied 10 points.  Walsh shot .574 from the field and .583 from three-point.

In the Cavs second round match-up with Cornerstone, all the weapons that were so vital in game one, were non-existent in game two.  They shot just .368 from the field and only .158 (3-19) from three-point range in the loss.  It seemed to be a combination of things in game two for Walsh.  One was the fact that they were playing their second straight 8:30 am game, and other was that Cornerstone played perhaps its finest game of the season against them.  The Golden Eagles shot .536 from the field, and out-rebounded the Cavs (35-32).  The 78 points allowed by the Cavs were the most since Malone scored 79 on March 3.  In the end, the Cavs just didn't have the legs to stay with the Golden Eagles.  Adam Lesch (Sr., Newark, OH/HS) scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in his final game for the Cavs.  Lesch, the only Walsh player to earn first-team Mid-Ohio Conference honors, shot a league-leading .606 from the field and averaged 12.8 points.  The Cavs also missed the talents of guard Jason Hicks (Sr., Cleveland, OH/Villa-Angela St. Joseph), who missed the tournament due to a broken bone in his foot, suffered in Walsh's AMC Playoff win over Ohio Dominican.  With Hicks out, Weems played 79 minutes in Walsh's two games.

Corey Jones led the Cavs in scoring (14.5 ppg) and free throw percentage (.857) for the season.  Eder Araujo (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Odete de Freitas) led the Cavs in rebounding (8.6), and Brandon Speck paced the team in three-point percentage (.467).  Walsh will return eight letter winners in 2007, and will lose five.

BASEBALL: Cavs (6-8) Rebound in Florida

After starting the season 0-4 in Kentucky, Walsh won six of ten games in Florida, and stand 6-8 on the season.  Weather permitting; they hope to open the home season on Tuesday against Mount Union College in single game at 3 pm. This weekend they play back-to-back double headers at Shawnee State University on Saturday and Sunday.

Walsh finished their Southern swing winning three of their final four games and reaching the championship game of the Warner Southern Tournament.  After defeating Saint Ambrose (8-5), Thomas College (3-0) and Warner Southern (9-5), the Cavs lost the title game 10-5 to Bellevue University.  The Cavs made quite a turn around from the previous spring, when they finished dead last in the tournament.  The Cavs received some outstanding pitching performances on the trip.  Mike Dougherty (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) won twice, pitching a five hitter in a 7-4 win over Webber, and a complete game win with eight strikeouts against Warner Southern.  Dougherty is 2-1, with a 2.84 ERA.  Andy Schon (Sr., Akron, OH/Coventry) is 1-2, but has a team-best 2.41 ERA.  Schon fanned nine in seven innings, in Walsh's 2-1 win over Siena Heights.  He has fanned 19 in 18.2 innings. Freshman second baseman Paul Aslanides (Louisville, OH/HS) leads the team with a .346 average.  Shortstop Chad Campbell (Jr., Ashtabula, OH/Lakeside) hit .341 with 14 hits, while Jason Pettigrew (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) leads the team with nine RBI.

SOFTBALL: Cavs (2-10) Struggle on Trip

Walsh (2-10) struggled on their annual spring trip, winning just two out of 12 games. The Cavs had the deadly combination of a weary offensive (.203) and a struggling defense (30 errors). They were held to three runs or less nine times, and were shutout four times. They open the Ohio portion of the season with double headers at Mount Union on Wednesday (2:30 pm), and at home with Hiram College (2 pm) on Friday.

First baseman Jamie Notch (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) led the Cavs offense with two homeruns, six RBI and a .333 average in 11 games.Krystal Sherry (Fr., Brunswick, OH/Holy Name) hit .273 in 12 games, and was 0-2 on the mound with a team best 3.00 ERA.Dana Hartings (Jr., Chickasaw, OH/Marion Local) pitched in tough luck the whole trip and finished 1-5, with a 3.59 ERA.Hartings fanned 33 in 41 innings, but was victimized by 17 unearned runs. She pitched a complete game three-hitter in Walsh’s 3-1 win over Evangel.

Benedict) is also 5-1, playing five times at number two and once at number one.
