BASEBALL: Cavs (6-12) Swept in Portsmouth, Open AMC North Play This Week

Walsh (6-12) looks to break a five-game losing streak, when they open American Mideast Conference North Division play this weekend.  The Cavs play two AMC North double headers with Geneva College.  The Cavs open the home season with Geneva on Thursday (1pm) and then play at Geneva on Saturday (1 pm).  Walsh is at Baldwin-Wallace College for a single game on Sunday (1 pm).

Walsh lost three one-run games at Shawnee State this past week.  The Cavs lost 3-2 and 10-4 on Saturday, and then 2-1 and 3-2 on Sunday.  The team has just not hit through the first 18 games, batting only .229.  Shortstop Chad Campbell (Jr., Ashtabula, OH/Lakeside) has been the Cavs most consistent hitter.  Campbell is batting a team-best .327, with four multi-hit games and a team-best 11-game hitting streak.  Andy Schon (Sr., Akron, OH/Coventry) is 1-2 in four starts, but has a sparkling 2.19 ERA.  Schon worked six strong innings in Walsh's 3-2 loss at Shawnee on Sunday, but did not get a decision.  Alan Frame (Jr., Atwater, OH/Waterloo) fanned nine, but was charged with loss at Shawnee State (3-2) on Sunday.  Mike Dougherty (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) went the distance, but was the losing pitcher in game two (3-2) on Sunday.

SOFTBALL: Cavs (3-13) Offensive Struggles Continue, Hope to Right Ship in AMC Play

Walsh's (3-13) offensive woes continued, as they scored 13 runs in going 1-3 this past week.  The Cavs are hitting just .210 and have been out scored 98-40 in the first 16 games.  The Cavs did snap a six-game losing streak, when they won the second game of a double header on Sunday.  This week they play eight games, including their American Mideast Conference South Division opener at Urbana University (1 pm) on Saturday.  The Cavs play non-league games with Ursuline College (3 pm) at home on Tuesday, Myers University (3 pm) at home on Wednesday, and Saint Vincent College (3 pm) at home on Friday.

The Cavs lost 3-2 and 6-1 to Mount Union College on Wednesday.  First baseman Jamie Notch (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) was 3-4 with a double and two RBI in game one.  In game two, all of Mount Union's runs were unearned, as the Cavs made three errors.  Walsh committed a season-high eight errors in their 14-4 loss to Hiram College in game one on Sunday.  The team has committed 42 errors for the season.  Dana Hartings (Jr., Chickasaw, OH/Marion Local) went the distance as Walsh gained a split with a 6-4 win in game two.  Hartings is 2-6 on the season.  Krystal Sherry (Fr., Brunswick, OH/Holy Name) and Laura Schmidt (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) each homered in the win.  Walsh lost outfielder Shannon Spellacy (Fr., Brunswick, OH/HS) for the season with a broken clavicle.
