BASEBALL: Cavs (8-11, 3-1 AMC N) Cavs Snap Six-Game Skid/Take Weekend Series from Saint Vincent

Walsh (8-11, 3-1 AMC N) opened American Mideast Conference North Division play by taking three out of four games from Saint Vincent College this past weekend, and in the process snapped a six-game losing streak.  The Cavs are back in action on Tuesday, when they host Baldwin-Wallace College in a single game. The Cavs then play two AMC North double headers with Malone College on Thursday and Saturday.  The Cavs host Malone on Thursday (1 pm) and play at Malone on Saturday (1 pm).

Walsh opened AMC North with a double header sweep at Saint Vincent College on Saturday.  The Cavs won both games by identical 4-0 scores, with each starting pitcher tossing a one-hit shutout.   Kyle Lynn (Jr., Massillon, OH/Tuslaw) turned the trick in game one and Andy Schon (Jr., Akron, OH/Coventry) matched the effort in game two.  Lynn had a perfect game for five and two-thirds innings, before surrendering a two-out walk, which was followed by a single.  Lynn is now 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA.  Andy Scritchfield (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) doubled and drove in two runs in game one and had two singles in the night cap.  Pat Conley (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) drove in a run with two singles in game one and Ryan Inama (Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) drove in a run.  Inama also drove in two runs with a double in game two.  Schon walked only a batter in improving to 2-1.

It was a long day of baseball for Walsh and Saint Vincent College on Sunday.  The two teams split an AMC North double header, in which both games went into extra innings.  After Walsh had rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one to tie the score at 5-5, Saint Vincent led-off the eighth with a homerun to win 6-5.  Andrew Tighe (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) gave up the solo homer and was tagged with the loss.  Ben Botbyl (Sr., Willard, OH/HS) drove in two runs in the opener for the Cavs.  Walsh had to rally in the seventh inning of game two in order to send the nightcap to extra innings, before winning 7-6 in eight innings.  Rollin Matsui (Jr., Thornhill, ONT/Westmount), who slugged a two-run homer earlier in the game, delivered a two-out single, on a 1-2 pitch to tie the game at 6-6.  In the eighth, Ryan Indorf (So., Massillon, OH/HS) had a pinch-hit double and was driven in by an Andy Scritchfield (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) single to end the ball game.  Duane Kaley (Sr., Deerfield, OH/Southeast) also doubled and drove in three runs.  Chris Norris (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) came on in the relief of Alan Frame (So., Atwater, OH/Waterloo) in the fifth inning, and picked up his third win (3-0) of the season.

The Cavs are hitting .306 as a team, with Rollin Matsui hitting .520.  Indorf is hitting 3.93 and Botbyl .360, with 10 RBI.  Jeff Nicholas (So., Navarre, OH/Perry) leads the team with 17 RBI.  Norris (1.74), Lynn (2.08) and Tighe (2.95) all have ERA's under 3.00.  The Cavs team ERA stands at 4.75.

SOFTBALL: Cavs (3-9) Split with Mount Union in First Games back North

After struggling through a 2-8 spring trip, Walsh came home a split and twin bill with Mount Union College last Tuesday.  This week, the Cavs hit the road three times, playing at Saint Vincent on Monday (3 pm), at Gannon on Wednesday (3 pm) and at Cedarville for their AMC South opener on Saturday (1 pm).  All dates are double headers.

Walsh split a non-league double header with Mount Union College and snapped a six-game skid with their 2-0 win in the opener.  Walsh then dropped the nightcap 11-3.  Kelly Sasavicz (Sr., Massillon, OH/Washington) provided the offensive power in game one with a game-wining two-run homer in the fifth inning.  Megan Pisciotta (So., Uniontown, OH/Akron Saint Vincent-St. Mary) took care of the rest, tossing a four-hit shutout to even her record at 2-2.  Nicole Offenbecher (Fr., Massillon, OH/Washington) also went 2-2 with a double.  In the second game, Mount Union scored in bunches to gain the split.  The Purple Raiders scored two runs in the first inning and three in the third, fourth and fifth.  Kelly Jackson (So., Akron, OH/Ellet) drove in two of Walsh's three runs with a single and Sasavicz was 2-2 with a triple.

Nicole Offenbecher leads the Cavs with a .393 average.  Kendra Shoup (Sr., Willard, OH/HS) is batting .382 and Jessica Edmunds (So., Uniontown, OH/Green) .375.  Kelly Jackson leads the team with seven RBI and Jamie Notch (So., Suffield, OH/Field) with two homeruns. Megan Pisciotta is 2-2 on the mound with a 3.00 ERA.

SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING: Cavs (9-9) Head to Nationals

After a fourth place finish at Zone Regionals at Wheaton College two weeks ago, the Cavs are headed to the United States Synchronized Swimming Championships, held at Stanford University.  The championships begin on Wednesday the 23rd and conclude on Saturday the 25th.  Walsh finished 15th last year.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (6-3) Blank Myers/Face Case Western Reserve Next

Walsh improved to 6-3, and won for the fifth time in six tries, when they blanked Myers University 9-0 last Tuesday.  This week, the Cavs host Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday (3:30 pm) and play Aquinas College at Hall of Fame Courts on Friday (6 pm).

Number one singles player Stephen Webster (So., Lexington, OH/HS) is 6-3 on the season, as is Sean Smith (Jr., Edgewater, NY/Bradenton Academy) at second singles.  The pair is also 6-1 at first doubles.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (3-2) Trip Ashland

Walsh improved to 3-2, after defeating Ashland University 7-2 on the road last Friday.  The Cavs swept the three doubles matches and won four of six singles matches.  Number one singles player Kristen Cady (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) won 6-2, 6-0, and won at first doubles with freshman Jenamarie Ianni (North Canton, OH/Hoover), 8-4.  Ianni also won at second singles, 6-0, 6-2.

Walsh will host Case Western Reserve University on Thursday (3:30 pm) and play in the Kenyon College Invitational on Saturday.
