BASEBALL: Cavs (9-11, 4-4) Even AMC Mark on Strength of Weekend Sweep

After losing four straight American Mideast Conference games at Shawnee State University the previous weekend, the Cavs could ill afford a similar fate against Point Park University this past weekend.  And they didn't.  Walsh swept the AMC visitors to even the AMC mark at 4-4.  The sweep also gave the Cavs five straight wins, after they out slugged Mount Union College 13-12 earlier in the week.  This week, the Cavs host rival Malone University (13-4, 0-0) in an AMC twin bill on Tuesday (1 pm), then play single games with Baldwin-Wallace College at home on Thursday (4 pm) and in Berea, Ohio on Sunday ( 1 pm).
Mike Weibley (Jr., Mentor, OH/Lake Catholic) and Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) combined to drive in seven runs in the wild affair with Mount Union.  Weibley doubled, homered and drove in four runs, while Maag hit a three-run homer.  Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) went 4-5, with a double, homer and two RBI.  Freshman Jeff Kotlar (Euclid, OH/HS) picked-up the win in relief.

In the first game of their AMC twin bill against Point Park, Walsh rallied with five runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to claim a come-from-behind 10-3 win.   Tyler Maag was 3-4, Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) went 3-3 with a double and three RBI and Duston Walter drove in a pair of runs, as did Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS).  Steve Weirich (Jr., Minerva, OH/HS) picked-up the win in relief.  Walsh's Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) hooked up with Point Park ace Addison Scherich in game two.  Each lasted eight innings, with Gura scattering six hits, allowing two runs and fanning five.  Walsh tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with two runs and won the game in the ninth, when Point Park failed to turn a game ending double play.  Kotlar (2-1) worked the ninth to earn the win.

Saturday pretty much belonged to Duston Walter, as the Cavs swept Point Park by scores of 7-2 and 15-5 (6 inn.).  Walter homered and walked three times in the opener, as Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) picked-up his first win (1-1) of the season.  Dougherty scattered five hits and walked only a batter in five innings.  Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) drove in two runs and Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) had three hits.  In game two, Walter hit a three-run homer and again walked three times as the Cavs completed the sweep.  Dustin Lancy doubled and drove in four runs and Justin Miller (Fr., Berlin, OH/Hiland) had a pinch hit three-run double.  Jared Roberts (So., Berea, OH/St. Ignatius) settled down after a four-run second to win his second (2-2) game of the season.

Marc Miller has hit safely in the last seven games and leads the Cavs in hitting (.358) and with 16 RBI.  Mike Suliks is batting .348, Dustin Lancy .345 and Rob Rose .333.  Duston Walter leads the Cavs with three homeruns, all hit last week.  Steve Weirich is 2-1, with a 2.95 ERA and Billy Gura is 1-1, with a 3.54 ERA.  Jeff Kotlar has been the staff workhorse with eight appearances.  Kotlar is 2-1, with a 3.86 ERA.  Walsh's five game win streak is the longest of the season.

SOFTBALL: Cavs' Struggles Continue

Walsh's early season struggles continue, as they dropped six of eight games last week, to stand 7-17 on the season.  This Wednesday, they open defense of their American Mideast Conference championship with a double header at Ursuline College (3 pm).

After dropping two games to Mount Union College on Thursday, the Cavs rebounded with two wins at the Indiana Wesleyan Tournament over the weekend.  Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) pitched five strong innings in Walsh's 4-2 win over the University of Saint Francis on Friday.  Virgin scattered six hits in five innings and allowed only a run.  Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) doubled and drove in two runs.  After losing a slugfest 12-11 to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday, the Cavs bounced back with a 6-4 win over St. Francis (Ill) in the second game of the day.  In the Wesleyan loss, Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) drove in three runs with a double and triple, while Sostre and Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) each homered and drove in two runs.  In the win over St. Francis, Ashley Virgin went the distance to improve to 4-5.

Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) is hitting a team-leading .368 and is second on the team with 13 RBI.  Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) has hit safely in five straight games and is batting .317.  Erica Kreiling leads the Cavs with three homeruns and 18 RBI and is batting .313.

MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs (5-4) String Together Three Straight Wins

Walsh improved to 5-4 on the season, after defeating Muskingum College (8-1) and Wittenberg University (6-3) last week.  The Cavs open American Mideast Conference action on Monday at Roberts Wesleyan College and host Malone University in another AMC match on Friday.

Mark Innes (Fr., Randburg, South Africa) has shined at third and fourth singles and is 9-0 on the season.  Diego Yung (Fr., Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires) is 6-3, with three straight wins.  Yung has played at the top four spots in the line-up.  CJ Kugler (So., Dover, OH/HS) and Corbin Eilander (Fr., Zeeland, MI/East Grand Rapids) are each 5-3.

Number one singles player, Jenamarie Ianni (Sr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) has fared well against tough competition and stands 4-4 on the season.  Hilary Rossi (Jr., Warren, OH/JFK) is 5-3 and has played all through the line-up.  Jen Yost (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) is 4-4, and has also played throughout the line-up.  Yost has teamed with Madeline Lewis (Jr., Westerville, OH/St. Francis DeSales) to form the Cavs most consistent doubles combination.  They stand 6-1 playing third doubles.
