BASEBALL: Cavs at Malone, Host Mount Vernon in Key AMC Games

Walsh (9-14, 4-6) looks to snap a three-game losing streak, when they take the field on Monday (3/30) in an American Mideast Conference double header against rival Malone University.  The games will be played at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium at 3:30 pm.  The Cavs are looking for revenge, after they were swept by Malone last week at home.  On Thursday, the Cavs play the first of two AMC twin bills with Mount Vernon Nazarene University.  The Cougars are at Walsh on Thursday (1 pm), with the Cavs traveling to Mount Vernon on Saturday (1 pm).  The Cavs are fifth in the AMC.

Malone swept the Cavs 13-0 (6 inn) and 8-6 last Tuesday.  Mike Shaeffer (So., Waynesburg, OH/Sandy Valley) was tagged with the loss (1-3) in game one and Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) (1-2) in the nightcap.  Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) and Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) each had two hits for Walsh and Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) drove in two runs in the second game.

Walsh used eight pitchers in a 7-5 non-conference loss to Baldwin-Wallace College on Friday.  Tyler Maag had three hits for the Cavs and Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) and Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) each had two hits.  Mike Shaeffer took the loss in relief (1-4).

Shortstop Mike Suliks lead the Cavs in hitting with a .372 average.  Suliks also leads the attack with five doubles.  Outfielder Dustin Lancy is hitting .353 with 14 RBI and designated hitter Mark Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) is hitting .351 with a team-leading 16 RBI.  Tyler Maag is hitting .338.  Freshman pitcher, Jeff Kotlar (Euclid, OH/HS) leads the team in appearances (10) and has the lowest ERA at 2.79.  He is one of three pitchers with two wins and has worked exclusively out of the bullpen.  He also has two saves.

MEN'S GOLF: Cavs Third at Kenyon

Walsh (14-19-1) shot a final round 331 and finished third at the 36-hole Kenyon College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.  Walsh finished with a two-day total of 666, just six strokes behind tournament winner College of Wooster (660) and two strokes back of second place Mercyhurst College (662). 

Sam Troyer (Sr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) finished fourth, with a two-day total of 160 (77-83).  Cody Cutright (Fr., Akron, OH/Springfield) tied for fifth at 163 (82-81), Collin Mottice (Fr., Manchester, OH/Green) tied for 20th at 169 (89-80), Jesse Green (Sr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) and Nick Gallo (Sr., Wickliffe, OH/HS) tied for 38th (87-90=177).  The Cavs also had three players competing as individuals.  Pat Moro (Sr., Warren, OH/JFK) tied for 32nd (84-94+175), Brant Harbert (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Green) tied for 44th (88-93+181) and Dominic Reolfi (Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) placed 52nd (97-90+187).

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs Win ODU Ice Breaker, Kulasa Medalist

Walsh (45-20) shot a final round 338, to win the six-team Ohio Dominican University Ice Breaker by 64 strokes over second place Ohio Dominican University (739).  The Cavs carded a two-day total of 675 (337-338).  The University of Northwestern Ohio was third (744), Urbana University fourth (753), Capital University fifth (754) and Malone University sixth (774).  The Cavs are idle this week.

Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) fired a final round 81 and was tourney medalist, with a two-day total of (84-81) 165.  Kulasa was one of four Cavs to be named to the all-tournament team.  Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) shot 82 for a total of 167 (85-82), Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) came in at 171 (83-88) and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) 175 (88-87), as they joined Kulasa on the all-tourney team.  Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) finished at 179 (85-94).

MEN'S TENNIS: Cavs Open AMC Play with Two Wins

Walsh (7-4, 2-0) opened American Mideast Conference play with back-to-back wins over Roberts Wesleyan University (9-0) and Malone University (5-4) last week.  This week, the Cavs are home to Notre Dame College (2-5, 0-0) on Tuesday (4 pm) and play at Ohio Dominican University (1 pm) on Wednesday.

Mark Innes (Fr., Randburg, South Africa), who has shined at third and fourth singles, is now playing first singles and is 11-0 on the season.  Diego Yung (Fr., Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires) is 8-3, with five straight wins.  Yung has played at the top four spots in the line-up.  CJ Kugler (So., Dover, OH/HS) is 6-4 at number five singles and Corbin Eilander (Fr., Zeeland, MI/East Grand Rapids) stands 6-4 at number six.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cavs Win AMC Opener

Walsh (4-6, 1-0) won its American Mideast Conference opener at Roberts Wesleyan University 8-1 last Monday.  The Cavs then lost a non-conference match at Wittenberg University (6-3) on Friday.  This week, the Cavs play an AMC match at Northwestern Ohio (3-4, 0-0) on Monday and at Carlow University (0-1, 0-1) on Wednesday.

Number one singles player, Jenamarie Ianni (Sr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) has fared well against tough competition and stands 6-4 on the season.  Hilary Rossi (Jr., Warren, OH/JFK) is 5-4 and has played all through the line-up.  Jen Yost (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) is 5-5, and has also played throughout the line-up.  Yost has teamed with Madeline Lewis (Jr., Westerville, OH/St. Francis DeSales) to form the Cavs most consistent doubles combination.  They stand 7-2 playing third doubles.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL: Cavs Open AMC Season with Sweep

Walsh (9-17, 2-0) opened defense of their American Mideast Conference championship with a double header sweep of Ursuline College last week.  This week, the Cavs play a non-conference double header at Urbana University (12-15) on Tuesday and host Cedarville University (11-17, 1-3). 

Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) fanned nine in Walsh's 5-2 win against Ursuline in the first game of their AMC twin bill.  Ford is 4-8 on the year.  Shortstop Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) was 2 for 4 with a double and designated hitter Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) was 3 for 4, as was third baseman Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge), who hit her second home run of the season.  Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) pitched a shutout with six strikeouts in Walsh's 7-0 win in game two.   Megan Allen was 3 for 4 with an RBI, and first baseman Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/HS) drove in the winning run with a double in the fourth inning.  Rosso was 3 for 4 in both games.

Megan Allen has hit safely in seven straight games and is batting a team-leading .368.  Second baseman Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) is second on the team with 14 RBI and a .356 average and has hit safely in the last six games.   Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) leads the Cavs with three homeruns and 18 RBI and is batting .313.  Laura Schmidt is hitting .324 with five doubles and 11 RBI.

MEN'S TRACK: Cavs Third at Wooster

Walsh finished a strong second (108) at the College of Wooster Invitational on Saturday.  The Scots won the meet with 116.50 points.  Edinboro University placed third with 88 points.  This Saturday, they compete at the Jack Hazen Open at Malone University.

Brian Williams (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) and Andrew Saris (Sr., Smithville, OH/HS) each had second place finishes.  Williams finished second in the 110m hurdles (14.84), and Saris in the triple jump (12.07).  Saris was also a part of the Cavs' 4x100m relay team that finished second in a time of 43.87.  He was joined by Jeff Tallman (Jr., Canton, OH/Perry), Dan Harsh (Fr., Perry, OH/HS) and Kevin Beichler (So., Smithville, OH/HS).  Harsh also grabbed a third place finish in the long jump (19-02.75).  Joe Paulenich (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) finished third in the shot (44-04.00).

WOMEN'S TRACK: Cavs Win at Wooster

For the second straight week, the Cavs (16-0) won a big meet, winning the nine-team College of Wooster Invitational on Saturday.  The Cavs finished with 135 points, 11 more than second place Ursuline College (124).  The College of Wooster finished third.  This Saturday, they compete at the Jack Hazen Open at Malone University.

Danielle Cofojohn (Jr., Diamond, OH/Southeast) was a double winner for the Cavs, winning the discus (134-09) and the shot put (40-11.75).  Jackie Misiak (Sr., North Royalton, OH/HS) placed second in the 400m hurdles (1:09.66) and third in the 100m hurdles (16.42).  Natalie Borland (So., Kent Roosevelt, OH/HS) tied for second in the high jump (4-11.75) and was third in discus (34.82).  Walsh's 4x100m relay team, comprised of Ashley Lewis (So., Louisville, OH/HS), Allie Simmons (Fr., Toledo, OH/Central Catholic), Jessica Swihart (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) and Elizabeth Emmanuel (Fr., Hubbard, OH/Ursuline) finished second in a time of 52.38.  Abbie Sullivan (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak), Chantelle Richards (So., Akron, OH/East), Erin Koppel (Sr., McDonald, OH/HS) and Denise Sahli (Jr., East Canton, OH/HS) placed third in the 4x400m relay (4:21.11).  Andrea DiNinno (Sr., Greensburg, PA/Central Catholic) finished second in the 5000m run (18:45.31), with Kristen LeFever (Jr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) third (19:44.15).
