Miguel Chavez Named Walsh University 2013 Mentor of the Year

Director of Campus Ministry Miguel Chavez was named this year's Terrance Portis Mentor of the Year. The recipient in nominated by the senior class for their outstanding guidance, education outside the classroom and significant contributions to their college experience.

Appointed in the summer of 2004, Miguel has been active with Walsh University as a student and now continues in Campus Ministry in service to holistically enriching students, staff and faculty. Miguel is a resident of Stark County and has been very active in area church, ministry, and educational programs. As a 2009 Mentor of the Year, this is the second time he has been selected for this honor by a Walsh senior class. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Walsh University in Theology and Pastoral Ministry and at the 2013 Spring commencement will receive his MBA. Miguel also serves as an adjunct professor in Theology.

Miguel works closely with Walsh students on a daily basis, getting to know them on a personal level. He uses his acquired knowledge to guide them in areas where they can excel. Students are quoted as saying the following about this year's recipient, "He is a role model who has taken special interest in the development of each student" and "His open door policy goes beyond what most people would consider 'open."

In 2012, Walsh University dedicated the Mentor of the Year Award in Memory of Recipient Terrance Portis. Terrance Portis passed away on January 25, 2012 at the young age of 27. A 2008 Walsh University alum, Terrance served as the manager of the Academic Resource Center and as one of the advisors for the Black Student Union. Known for his outreach to all students, Terrance was nominated as the 2011 Mentor of the Year for "constantly communicating with students and encouraging them to better their studies." The Walsh University Student Government and senior class have honored his memory and legacy on campus by formally naming the award as the Terrance Portis Mentor of the Year Award.
