MEN'S BASKETBALL: (3-1) Cavs Back on Track, Down Roberts Wesleyan

After a disappointing loss to the University of Scranton in the championship game of the Alvernia College Tip-Off Tournament, NAIA No. 6 Walsh (3-1) bounced back with a 73-63 win over Roberts Wesleyan College last Tuesday.  This Tuesday, the Cavs meet another New York State team when Houghton College comes to Alumni Arena for an 8 pm start.  On Thursday, the Cavs renew their rivalry with Malone College at Osborne Hall at 7:30 pm.  Both games will be aired live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

Eder Araujo (Sr., 7-0, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Odete Maria de Freitas) scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in Walsh's start to finish victory.  Araujo scored 12 first half points, as Walsh bolted to a 20-4 lead.  The Cavs then led 29-15, when Roberts went on an 11-2 run to close the half and the lead to 31-26 at the break.  Walsh put the game away in the first ten minutes of the second half, and led 55-33 with 10:05 to play.   Lamar Skeeter (5-10, Fr., Dayton, OH/Fairmont Kettering) was the only other Cavalier to reach double figures, scoring 11 points off the bench.

Corey Jones (Sr., 6-3, Avon Lake, OH/Akron Saint Vincent-Saint Mary) leads the Cavs in scoring, averaging 15.2 points per game.  Freshman standout Lamar Skeeter has come off the bench and provided instant offense and is averaging 14.8 points.  Araujo is averaging 13.8 points and 8.0 rebounds and Brandon Weems (Sr., 5-10, Akron, OH/Saint Vincent-Saint Mary) is averaging 11.5 points and 6.0 assists.  The Cavs are averaging 88.5 points per games

Walsh leads the all-time series 11-0 with Houghton.  The Cavs won 63-54 at Houghton last year.  This year the Highlanders are 2-1. 

Walsh and Malone (5-2) meet in a non-conference game at Osborne Hall on Thursday at 7:30 pm.  Malone joined the American Mideast Conference North this season.  The Pioneers are 5-2 on the season.  Walsh leads the all-time series 55-39.  Malone snapped Walsh's six-game win streak last year, with a 79-72 win.  The Mayor's Cup game will be played on February 7 at Walsh.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Edge Closer to .500 with Home Win

Walsh (2-3) closed to within one game of the .500 mark, after an impressive 82-66 win over Roberts Wesleyan College last Tuesday.  This week the Cavs are home to Houghton College on Tuesday (6 pm) and to Point Park University on Saturday (2 pm). On Thursday, Walsh travels across town to renew their rivalry with Malone College at 5:30 pm.  The game will be aired live on AM 900 WCER and on the Internet at www.wcer.us.

Walsh led from start to finish in defeating Roberts Wesleyan 82-66 last Tuesday.  The Cavs led 36-28 at halftime, and then exploded for 46 second half points in the win.  Walsh placed four players in double figures, led by Katie Berry's (5-11, Fr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) 21 points, five assists and three steals.  Berry was 9-13 from the field.  The Cavs received another strong performance from Leah Seaman (5-8, So., Louisville, OH/HS).  Seaman tallied 16 points, dished out seven assists and had two steals.  Natalie Houdek (6-0, Fr., Brunswick, OH/HS) added 11 points and Cara Bedard (6-0, Fr., Mogadore, OH/Waterloo) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench.  Walsh shot .492 from the field and a blistering .593 (16-27) in the second half.  The Cavs out rebounded the Raiders 43-37.

Katie Berry leads the team in scoring, with a 13.2 per game average.  Berry is shooting .500 (27-54) from the field.  She is also averaging 5.8 rebounds.  Cara Bedard is averaging 12.2 points and leads the team in rebounding (7.0 RPG).  Leah Seaman is also in double figures, averaging 12.2 points.  Seaman also leads the team with 19 assists. 

Walsh leads the all-time series 4-0 with Houghton and 5-0 with Point Park.  Walsh and Malone (1-5) meet for the 59th time on Thursday, with Malone holding a 31-27 series edge.  The Pioneers have won the last three meetings.  The Mayor's Cup game will be played on February 7 at Walsh.

MEN'S SOCCER: Keller, Lindesmith Named to the NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete Team

Greg Keller (Sr., Napoleon, OH/HS) and Jason Lindesmith (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) have been named to the NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete Team.  Keller, who also earned the honor last year, is finance major and carries a 3.51 grade point average.  Lindesmith is a corporate communications major and carries a 4.00 GPA. 

WOMEN'S SOCCER: McDermitt, Swope Named First Team All-Region/ Perna, Sullivan Named to the NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete Team

Walsh placed four players on the NAIA All-Region IX Team and two on the NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete Team. Shayna McDermitt (So., Green, OH/HS) and Abby Swope (Sr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) were named to the All-Region IX First Team and Leya Spence (Jr., Mansfield, OH/Madison) and Chrissy Summers (So., Doylestown, OH/Chippewa) were each named to the second team.  Christine Perna (Jr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) and Abbie Sullivan (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) were named NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes.

McDermitt, who also earned First Team All-AMC South honors at defender, was a mainstay on a defense that allowed only 22 goals in 18 games. She played in all 18 games and scored one goal and had one assist and was twice named AMC Defensive Player of the Week.  Swope, who was named Second Team All-AMC South at midfield, led the team with 11 goals and 26 points.  She also had four assists in 18 games.  The talented senior is third in career goals (32) and points (80).

Spence, a First Team All-AMC South selection at midfield, finished second on the team with 10 goals and third with 24 points.  She played in 16 games and also had four assists.  Summers earned First Team All-AMC South honors at forward in her first season on the field.  The Cavs’ leader in assists with seven, Summers played basketball last year for the Cavs.  Chrissy had nine goals and finished second on the team with 25 points.  She was an AMC Offensive Player of the Week in September.

Perna and Sullivan are each earning scholar-athlete honors for the first time.  Perna is an accounting major and carries a 3.58 grade point average, while Sullivan is a business management major with a 3.53 grade point average.
