MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs (3-2) Open Defense of AMC South Title

Walsh (3-2) opens defense of its American Mideast Conference South Division title at home against Tiffin University on Tuesday night.  On Saturday, they travel to Saint Vincent College.  Both games can be heard live on AM 900 WCER and on the internet at www.wcer.us. The Cavs were idle last week. 

Walsh and Tiffin (3-0) open AMC South play at 8 pm on Tuesday night. The Dragons are unbeaten in three games and downed Daemen College 83-75 on the road on November 22.  The Cavs lost to Daemen 62-61 at home on November 15. Walsh took both games from Tiffin last year and leads the all-time series 47-21.  The Dragons are averaging 90.7 points and shooting .531 from the field.  Walsh and Saint Vincent (5-2) meet in a re-match of the 2005 AMC title game in Latrobe, PA on Saturday.  The Bearcats won the title game 77-75, after Walsh had won an earlier meeting 66-64.  Saint Vincent leads the all-time series 10-5. 

Walsh's balanced scoring attack has four players in double figures.  Eder Araujo (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Odete Maria de Freitas) is averaging 18.2 points and 8.2 rebounds and is shooting .642 from the field and .636 from three-point.  Corey Jones (So., Avon Lake, OH/Akron Saint Vincent-Saint Mary) is averaging 11.6 points and shooting .875 from the foul line.  Brandon Weems (So., Akron, OH/Saint Vincent-Saint Mary) is averaging 10.4 points and Jason Hicks (Jr., Cleveland, OH/Villa Angela-Saint Joseph) 10.2 points.  The Cavs are averaging 76.0 points and giving up 63.4.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Shawnee State Too Much For Cavs

Walsh (1-3, 0-1) opened the American Mideast Conference South season with a 97-57 setback at Shawnee State University last Tuesday.  This Tuesday, the Cavs are back in AMC South play, when they host Tiffin University at 6 pm.  The Cavs then play two non-league games on this four-game home stand, when they host Notre Dame College on Thursday (7 pm) and Daemen College on Saturday (2 pm).

NAIA No. 22 Shawnee State University (6-0, 1-0) outscored Walsh 53-21 in the second half, on their way to a 97-57 win.  Walsh hung with the Bears the first 20 minutes, trailing only 44-36 at the half.  But in the second half, the Cavs shot only .286 (6-21) from the field and were 0-7 from three-point, while SSU shot .500 from the field and from behind the arc.  Beth Sternberg (Sr., East Canton, OH/HS) was the only Walsh player to score in double figures, finishing with 13 points.

Walsh and Tiffin (2-2, 0-0) meet for the 38th time on Tuesday.  The Cavs lead the series 19-18, but have lost the last three games.  Walsh and Notre Dame College (4-1) meet for the 30th time, with the Cavs leading the series 27-2.  Walsh has won the last 19 meetings.  Notre Dame is much improved, with their only loss coming to Seton Hill (77-74).  Walsh and Daemen (3-3) meet for the sixth time on Saturday, with the Cavs holding a 4-1 series advantage.  Both Notre Dame and Daemen are from the AMC North.

Walsh is averaging 66.5 points and has three players in double figures.  Beth Sternberg is the top scorer, averaging 12.3 points.  Ingrid Brainard (Jr., Madison, OH/HS) is averaging 12.0 points and has dished out a team leading 17 assists.  Dionna Hammett (Sr., Warrensville Heights, OH/St. Peter Chanel) is averaging 10.8 points and a team leading 6.8 rebounds.

MEN'S SOCCER: Zeller Named NAIA Daktronics All-America Scholar Athlete 

Defender Andrew Zeller (Sr., Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) has been named to the NAIA Daktronics All-America Scholar Athlete team.  Zeller is a middle childhood education major and carries a 3.85 grade point average.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Place Three on NAIA Daktronics All-America Scholar Athlete Team

Walsh has placed three players on the NAIA Daktronics All-America Scholar Athlete team.  Julianne Boyne (Jr., Strongsville, OH/Padua Franciscan), Elise Francis (Sr., Randolph, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Stephany Quinn (Sr., Mississauga, ONT/St. Joseph) were all selected to the team.  Boyne is an early childhood education major and carries a 3.88 grade point average.  Francis is an education major and carries a 3.86 average and Quinn is a pre-med major and carries a 3.92 average.  Francis and Quinn were selected to the team last year.
