FOOTBALL: Cavs Roll at Trinity

NAIA No. 23 Walsh (7-3, 4-2) bounced back from their tough loss to unbeaten Saint Xavier University, with a 38-7 thrashing of Trinity International in a Mid-States Football Association Mideast road encounter last Saturday.  This week the Cavs close the regular season at home with MSFA Mideast foe Marian University at 12 pm at Fawcett Stadium.  The game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER (www.wcer.us) and on NewsTalk 640 WHLO (www.640whlo.com) at 11:45 am.

Toba Olarewaju (R-Fr., Youngstown, OH/Christian) rushed for a career-high 202 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns in the lopsided win.  Olarewaju scored on runs of 15-yards and two one-yard carries.  Kevin Beichler (Jr., Orrville, OH/Smithville) came off the bench to add two TDs on runs of six and four yards.  Beichler rushed for 94 yards on 12 carries.  Walsh rolled-up 422 yards total offense, with 315 yards coming on the ground.  The Cavs defense limited Trinity to 188 yards total offense.

Walsh closes the home season with Marian University (6-4, 3-3) on Saturday.  The Knights scored with ten seconds to play to beat Malone University 28-24 in Indianapolis, IN on Saturday.  Marian quarterback Matt Rogers passed for 272 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Chris Rutherford caught six passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns.  The all-time series between the teams is tied at 1-1.  Marian won 34-31 in overtime in Indianapolis last year.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Play First Game in New Alumni Arena on Tuesday

Walsh opens its 48th season of intercollegiate basketball at home on Tuesday night.  The Cavs play their first game in the new Alumni Arena against first-year program Cincinnati Christian College (0-1).  Then on Friday, the Cavs have a stiff test when they welcome Goshen College (2-1) at 7:30 pm.  Both games will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER (www.wcer.us).

Ricky Jackson (6-7, Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley/West Virginia State) led Walsh with 14 points and six rebounds in their 86-48 exhibition loss at Ohio State University last Wednesday night.  He was the only Cavalier to reach double figures.  OSU shot 61% (17-28) from the floor in the first half and led 40-24.  The Buckeyes shot even better in the second half at 65% (20-31) and outscored Walsh 46-24.  The Cavs shot only 29% (16-55) for the night. 

Walsh and Cincinnati Christian College (0-1) meet for the first time.  The Crusaders lost their first game 100-40 at Olivet Nazarene last Friday night.  Antonio Price led CCC with 12 points.

Walsh meets Goshen College (2-1) on Friday.  The Maple Leafs stunned NAIA No. 7 Grand View College to win the Maple City Hoopfest at Goshen.  Walsh and Goshen are meeting for the first time.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Open 30th Season and New Building with Back-to-Back Wins

Walsh opened its 30th season with back-to-back wins at the new Alumni Arena.  The Cavs downed Concordia College (MI) 94-76 in the first basketball game in the new 2,000 seat Alumni Arena on Friday night.  Then on Saturday, they bested Marian College 77-64 in the final game of the Walsh Classic.  This week they host Malone University (1-0) on Tuesday in the 14th Annual Mayors' Cup game, and then travel to Kentucky for a pair of games this weekend.  The Cavs meet Berea College on Friday night (6 pm) and St. Catharine College on Saturday (2 pm).  The Walsh/Malone game will be broadcast on AM 900 WCER (www.wcer.us) at 7:50 pm.

Walsh's balanced attack produced five double figure scorers in the win over Concordia.  Kayla Kovach (So., 6-0, Lakewood, OH/HS/IPFW) led with a team-high 16 points in her first game in a Walsh uniform.  The Indiana-Purdue Ft. Wayne transfer shot 6-8 from the floor.  Walsh shot a blistering 60% (35-68) for the game and handed out 29 assists.  Cara Bedard (Jr., 6-0, Randolph, OH/Waterloo) and Jessie Miller (Sr., 5-10 Strasburg, OH/HS) each scored 15 points.  Bedard pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.  Kristi Yoder (So., 6-1, Millersburg, OH/Hiland) chipped in 14 points and Darlene Woolf (Jr., 5-7, East Rochester, OH/United) 10. Katie Berry (5-11, Jr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph) handed out a game-high nine assists.

Walsh then improved to 2-0 under Wartluft for the first time, and first time since 2004, with a 77-64 win over Marian University.  Leah Seaman (5-8, Sr., Louisville, OH/HS) came off the bench to lead all scorers with 17 points.  Bedard added 15 points, Miller 14, and Berry 13 and seven assists.  Walsh shot 50% (29-58) from the floor and 78% from the line, and for the second straight game recorded more assists than turnovers.  The Cavs Cara Bedard was named Classic MVP.

Walsh and Malone meet in the 14th annual Mayors' Cup game on Tuesday.  Malone leads the Cup Series 7-6.  Walsh has won the last two Cup games and can retire the Cup for the first time with a win on Tuesday.  The all-time series is tied at 31.  Overall, the Cavs have won the last four games played between the two schools.

CROSS COUNTRY:

MEN: Cavs Fourth at AMC Meet

Walsh (38-39) finished an impressive fourth place in the AMC cross country championships at Cedarville University today. Running away with the competition was Malone University, with Shawnee State University and Cedarville University a distant second and third, respectively.

Most of the Cavs runners were in a pack, with those earning team points finishing between 27th and 39th. Overall they finished between 36th and 52nd. Leading the way was Jordan Groubert (Fr., Hartville, OH/Lake) (27th) with a time of 27:52 and a pace of 5:37, followed immediately by teammate Matt Long (Sr., Mogadore, OH/HS) a second later (28th). Finishing third for the team was Dan Bauman (So., Paris, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) (32nd) at 28:22. Fourth was Luke Immel (Jr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) at 28:46 (36th) and fifth was Phil Kress (So., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) at 29:10 (39th). Also participating for the Cavs were Bob Fay (Jr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) at 29:27 and Kevin Sellers (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) at 30:15.

WOMEN: Cavs 5th at AMC/Laughlin Earns All-AMC Honors

Walsh finished fifth (138) at the AMC championships held at Cedarville University on Saturday.  Malone University won the AMC title.

The Cavaliers were paced by Katie Laughlin (So, Malvern, OH/Canton South) with a time of 20:14 and pace of 6:32, good for 21st. Laughlin was named honorable mention All-AMC.  She was followed by Nicole Culler (So., Beloit, OH/West Branch) at 20:33 (24th). Other earning points for Walsh were Kim Swartz (Fr., Tiffin, OH/Tiffin Calvert) with a time of 20:48 (28th), Lissa Yoder (Fr., Cortland, OH/Maplewood) 10 seconds later at 20:58 (31st), and Megan Case (Jr., Louisville, OH/HS) at 21:13 (34th). Also running for the Cavs were Amber Cross (Fr., Mineral Ridge, OH/HS), who finished at 21:48, and Emily Depalmo (Fr., Minerva, OH/HS), who finished at 21:57.

Laughlin’s finish earned her an honorable mention for the All-AMC Women’s Cross Country Team.

MEN'S SOCCER: Mt. Vernon Blanks Cavs 3-0 in AMC Playoff

Walsh (11-7) fell 3-0 at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University (13-5-1) on Saturday in the opening round of the AMC playoffs.

After a scoreless first half, Mt. Vernon Nazarene scored at 49:10 and again at 51:31 on a 40-yard free kick to stun the Cavaliers. In the 66th minute, Mt. Vernon Nazarene added an insurance goal for the final tally.
Walsh outshot the Cougars 7-2 in the first half, but were outshot in the second half 11-4.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Fall 2-0 at Notre Dame in AMC Playoff

Walsh (6-9-3) fell 2-0 to Notre Dame College in a first round AMC Playoff game.  The third-seeded Falcons (12-6) scored two first half goals, then made them stand up at Brush High School in Lyndhurst, Ohio on Sunday night.

Notre Dame's Morgan Lichtinger scored 4:49 into the game to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.  Katie Christensen then tallied the final goal at the 34:53 mark of the half. 

Walsh outshot the Falcons 13-8.

VOLLEYBALL: Cavs Close Regular Season with loss at Mt. Vernon/Meet Cedarville in AMC Playoff

Walsh fell to 26-8 and to 8-4 in the AMC after losing their regular season finale at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (32-7, 10-2) last Thursday.  Walsh is the third seed for the AMC Tournament and will meet Cedarville at 1 pm at Mount Vernon on Saturday in the AMC Tournament, with the winner advancing to the championship match.

Walsh fell to Mt. Vernon Nazarene University in four sets (25-23, 23-25, 13-25, 29-31).  Hannah Duran (5-9, Fr., Grafton, OH/Midview) paced the Cavs with 52 assists and 21 digs.  Julianne O'Donnell (5-10, Fr., Willowick, OH/Lake Catholic) led with 15 kills, Brittany Morris (5-11, Fr., North Royalton, OH/Padua) added 11 kills and Natalie Borland (6-0, Sr., Kent, OH/HS) contributed 10 kills and two aces. 

Jenna Golic (5-10, Fr., Mentor, OH/HS) led the team with 30 digs, Natalie Phillips (5-10, So., Wooster, OH/HS) added 24 and Amy Police (5-5, Sr., Perry, OH/HS) 23.
