FOOTBALL: 15th Ranked Cavs (5-1, 3-0) Win 5th Straight, Remain Unbeaten in MSFA Mideast/Reine' Offensive Player of the Week
NAIA No. 15 (next ranking released 10/10) Walsh University (5-1, 3-0) won its fifth straight game, defeating visiting Quincy University (2-4, 1-1) 31-26 in a Mid-States Football Association Mideast game, played on Saturday in a driving rain storm at Fawcett Stadium. The win keeps the Cavs unbeaten in the Mideast and in first place, one-half game ahead of Saint Francis (IN) (5-0, 2-0) and Urbana (5-1, 2-0). The Cavs are on the road this Saturday, at Taylor University (0-5, 0-2) for a Mideast game at 2:30 pm. The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network on 900 AM WCER and on the internet at www.wcer.us.
Walsh's Sam Cerreta (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) passed for 133 yards and three TDs and Antwain Reine' (So., Dayton, OH/Trotwood Madison) rushed for 204 yards, as Walsh held off a Quincy rally in the fourth quarter. Reine' was named MSFA Mideast Offensive Player of the Week for his performance. After Quincy took a 3-0 lead, Walsh scored twice on TD tosses from Cerreta. First, he hit Donel Durham (Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/Schenley) for a 26-yard score, then Cerreta connected with Darryl Owens (Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) for a 23-yard score to give the Cavs a 14-3 lead. Quincy and the Cavs then traded field goals and Walsh led 17-6 in the second quarter. Walsh padded their lead when Dustin Stewart (Fr., Ravenna, OH/Southeast) scored on a nine-yard run, to give the Cavs a 24-6 lead with 1:16 to go in the first half. Quincy came right back and closed the gap, driving 65 yards on nine plays, to trim the Walsh lead to 24-12 at the half.
Walsh's only score of the second half came on the opening drive, when Rob Lash (So., Shelby, OH/HS) caught a 10-yard TD pass from Cerreta giving the Cavs a 31-12. Quincy answered on their next possession, trimming the lead to 31-19, then scored in the fourth quarter on a one-yard run and trailed 31-26 with 8:58 to play. The Hawks stopped Walsh, and had a chance to win the game with 4:45 to play after Walsh missed a field goal. The Hawks drove from their own 20 to the Walsh 35-yard line, when disaster hit. Quincy quarterback Matt Wehrle fumbled a snap on second down, and then was sacked on third down for a 12-yard loss to midfield. On fourth down, Quincy elected to punt, pushing Walsh back to its own six-yard line with 1:38 to play. Walsh's Antwain Reine' then sealed the game for the Cavs, when he raced 79 yards on first down to the Quincy 15, where the Cavs then ran out the clock.
Other fine offensive performances came from Rob Lash and Darryl Owens. Lash caught four passes for 55 yards and Owens caught three passes for 52 yards. On defense, Joe Phinisee (DB, So., Warren, OH/Harding) had seven tackles and an interception. Linebackers Jon Raddish (Sr., Mogadore, OH/HS) and Brian Rogers (Sr., Kent, OH/Roosevelt) combined to make 17 tackles.
Antwain Reine' leads the MSFA in rushing with 787 yards, averaging 5.8 per carry and 131.2 yards per game. In three games as the Cavs starting quarterback, Sam Cerreta has completed 51.9 percent of his passes for 365 yards and five touchdowns and no interceptions. Rob Lash is averaging 35.2 yards each kick return, but does not lead the league because teams are kicking away from Rob. He does not have enough returns per game.
Walsh travels to Upland, Indiana to meet Taylor University on Saturday. The Trojans played well last Saturday against NAIA No. 18 Urbana, before falling 30-17. The game was close throughout, until Urbana kicked three fourth quarter field goals to provide the final margin. Walsh won 57-19 at Fawcett Stadium last year and lead the all-time series 4-1. Taylor's only win came in 1999 (33-21).
