FOOTBALL: Cavs (6-1, 4-0) Win 6th Straight, Remain Unbeaten in MSFA Mideast with 45-14 Win at Taylor/Lash Sets Return Record
NAIA No. 15 (next ranking released 10/17) Walsh University (6-1, 4-0) won its sixth straight game, defeating Taylor University 45-14 in a Mid-States Football Association Mideast game played Saturday in Upland, Indiana. The win keeps the Cavs unbeaten in the Mideast, and in first place, one-half game ahead of Saint Francis (IN) (6-0, 3-0). The Cavs are home this Saturday, for a Mideast game with Geneva College (4-3- 1-2) at 12 pm. The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network on 900 AM WCER, 1350 AM WARF and on the internet at www.wcer.us.
Rob Lash (So., Shelby, OH/HS) led the Cavs offensive attack at Taylor, returning a kick and a punt for touchdowns. Lash was named Mid-States Football Association Mideast Special Teams Player of the Week for the second straight week and for the third time this season. Lash has returned three kick-offs and two punts for touchdowns this season. Lash returned a kick-off, a Walsh record 95 yards for a score, and a punt return 69 yards (one-yard shy of a Walsh record) for a score, as the Cavs scored in every quarter. Walsh scored the first ten points and led 10-0 after one quarter. The Cavs scored 14 points in the second and third quarters, and led 38-7 after three quarters. Antwain Reine' (So., Dayton, OH/Trotwood Madison) rushed for 138 yards and scored twice. Quarterback Sam Cerreta (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) passed for 98 yards on 6-13 with a TD, tossing a 16-yard TD pass to Darryl Owens (Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) in the fourth quarter.
Antwain Reine' leads the MSFA in rushing with 925 yards, averaging 5.8 per carry and 132.1 yards per game. Rob Lash is averaging 40.6 yards each kick return, but fails to qualify among the leaders because he lacks the required number of returns per game. Teams have been kicking away from Lash. Lash does, however, lead the MSFA in all purpose yards, averaging 150.9 yards per game.
Walsh has won six games in a row on two other occasions, 1995 and 2001. They have never won seven straight games.
Walsh returns home to Fawcett Stadium to meet Geneva College on Saturday. Geneva blanked Quincy University 24-0 in the second half, on their way to a 52-21 win at home last Saturday. The game was tied 14-14 after one quarter and Geneva led 28-21 at the half. The Golden Tornadoes had three TDs of more than 38 yards. They scored on pass plays of 49 and 43 yards and returned a punt 72 yards for a score. Geneva running back Brandon Nathan rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Justin Sciarro passed for 153 yards and three TDs. Geneva is averaging 26.1 points per game and allowing 22.6 per game. Geneva leads the all-time series with Walsh 6-4, but the Cavs have won the last four meetings and won 14-7 at Geneva last year.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (8-4-2, 4-1-1) Win Twice/Tied For Second in AMC South
Walsh (8-4-2, 4-1-1) won twice last week and are one win away from clinching an American Mideast Conference playoff berth, with two AMC matches left. This week, the Cavs host Tiffin University in an AMC match on Tuesday (3 pm), play a non-conference match at Geneva College on Thursday (7 pm) and play at Urbana University in an AMC contest on Saturday (1 pm). A Cavalier win against either Tiffin or Urbana will put the Cavs in the post season.
Walsh put forth its most explosive offensive performance of the season, in a 10-0 win over visiting Myers University. The win snapped a string of three matches without a win for the Cavs. Amanda Waltz (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) scored two of her four goals in the first half, as the Cavs built a 5-0 halftime lead. Walsh will host Mount Vernon Nazarene on Tuesday. The Cavs beat the Cougars at Mount Vernon on October 1, and a win would elevate the Cavs into a tie with the Cougars and give them the tie-breaker.
