FOOTBALL: 15th Ranked Cavs (4-1, 2-0) Keep Gallagher Trophy With Win (34-16) Over Malone/Lash Special Teams Player of Week
NAIA No. 15 (new rankings out today) Walsh won its fourth straight game, defeating Malone College (1-3, 0-1) 34-16 in a Mid-States Football Association Mideast game at Fawcett Stadium on Saturday. The win was the seventh straight over the Pioneers for the Cavaliers and keeps the Dick Gallagher Memorial Trophy in the Walsh trophy case. Walsh is home to Quincy University (2-3, 1-0) in a MSFA Mideast game at 12 pm at Fawcett Stadium this Saturday at 12 pm.
Malone drove inside the Walsh ten-yard line on the first possession of the game, but had the drive halted when Craig McConnell (Fr., Massillon, OH/Washington) intercepted a Malone pass on the two-yard line. Walsh then marched 98 yards and scored on a two-yard run by Antwain Reine' (So., Dayton, OH/Trotwood-Madison). Reine' led the Cavs with 93 yards rushing on 22 carries. Walsh extended their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter, when Rob Lash (So., Shelby, OH/HS) returned a punt 63 yards for a TD. It was Lash's third return for a score on the season. Lash has been named the MSFA's Mideast Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season. His first two returns for TDs were on kick-offs. Malone's only score of the half came on a 34-yard field goal with one second to play in the half. Walsh led 14-3 at halftime. The Cavs took the third quarter kick-off and extended their lead to 21-3 when Ron "Rock" Johnson (Sr., Cleveland, OH/St. Peter Chanel/Kentucky) scored on a two-yard run. Malone cut the lead to 21-10 with a TD with 3:33 to play in the third, but Walsh answered at the 1:04 mark of the same period when Brad Jarrett (Sr., North Ridgeville, OH/HS) scored on a 20-yard run. The two teams traded fourth quarter TDs. Walsh's came on a 10-yard pass from Sam Cerreta (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) to Darryl Owens (Sr., Barberton, OH/HS). Cerreta, starting for the second straight week for the injured Dan Kane (Sr., Bolivar, OH/Tusky Valley), completed 8-14 passes for 97 yards. In the last two games, Cerreta has completed 18 of 32 passes for 225 yards, with two TDs and no interceptions.
Walsh and Quincy meet for the third time, all-time, this Saturday. Walsh holds the series advantage 2-0 and won 30-24 at Quincy last season. Quincy won their MSFA Mideast opener 26-19 against Taylor University last week. The Hawks erased a 12-3 halftime deficit by outscoring Taylor 23-7 in the second half. Tailback Kim Fields gained 112 yards on 21 carries and quarterback Matt Wehrle completed 20 of 32 passes for 228 yards, with a TD and an interception. Wehrle also scored on a 32-yard run. The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network on AM 900 WCER and on News-Talk 640 AM WHLO.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs (27-3) at All-Ohio Meet on Friday
Walsh (27-3) prepares for the All-Ohio Meet at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio on Friday. The Cavs finished 15th last year. The Cavs hosted a Co-Ed Invitational with Malone, Notre Dame and Lake Erie last Friday. The men won their side of the event and finished second in Co-Ed totals. Joel Dagenhardt (Sr., Marlington, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with a second place finish in a time of 16:25. Brenden McKee (Fr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) was third in a time of 16:32, Steve Mackle (Sr., Malvern, OH/HS) finished sixth (16:43), Chris Zundel (Jr., Madison, OH/HS) and John Winnyk (Fr., Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) were seventh (16:45), and Josh Rogers (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) ninth (16:48).
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs (21-14) at All-Ohio Meet on Friday
Walsh (21-14) prepares for the All-Ohio Meet at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio on Friday. The Cavs finished 30th last year. The Cavs hosted a Co-Ed Invitational last Friday. The women finished second to Malone and second in the co-ed race. Katie Wirtz (So., Lakewood, OH/HS) led the Cavs with a sixth place finish in a time of 20:45. Andrea DiNinno (Fr., Harrison, PA/Greensburg CC) was next for the Cavs with a seventh place finish (21:12). Lindsay Cooper (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) was eighth (21:28) and Tess Francis (Jr., Waterloo, OH/Randolph) eleventh (21:37).
WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs (10-17) Second at Ohio Dominican Invitational/Schumacher, Foster and Haver Earn
All-Tourney Honors
Walsh (10-17) finished second in the six-team Ohio Dominican University Invitational in Columbus, Ohio last Friday and Saturday. Seton Hill University won the event. Tammy Schumacher (So., Whitney Point, NY/HS), Kaley Foster (Fr., Manchester, OH/HS) and Christine Haver (Jr., Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Schumacher led the Cavs and finished with a two-day total of 177 (91-86). Foster shot 179 (93-86) and Haver finished with a 181 (87-94).
Walsh will host a two-day invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Sanctuary Golf Club in North Canton.
MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (7-2-1, 1-2) Drop Two AMC Games
NAIA No. 20 Walsh lost two heartbreakers in American Mideast Conference South Division play last week. The Cavs lost 1-0 at Tiffin on Tuesday, then fell 2-1 in overtime to NAIA No. 2 University of Rio Grande on Saturday. This week the Cavs look to bounce back against Malone College at home in an AMC contest on Tuesday, then travel to Houghton for a non conference game on Saturday.
Tiffin University (5-3-1, 2-1) continues to be a thorn in the side of the Cavs, as they handed Walsh its first loss of the season on Tuesday, 1-0, in an AMC South match. The Dragons scored the only goal of the game off a free kick, that deflected off a Cavalier at the 86:25 mark. Tiffin out shot the Cavs 12-5. Walsh had seven corner kicks to the Dragons six . Walsh's Eric Brockmeier (Sr., Marietta, OH/HS) had seven saves.
Walsh and the University of Rio Grande staged a classic battle last Saturday at Walsh. The Cavaliers led for 83 minutes, but fell 2-1 in overtime. Walsh's Leon O'Neill (Jr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan) scored an unassisted goal to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead 36-minutes into the contest. The lead held until the 83-minute mark when the Redmen tied the game on a goal from Conar Dawson. Rio's Milan Partenjevic then scored five minutes into overtime to give the Redmen the win. Eric Brockmeier stopped eleven shots in goal for the Cavs. Rio out shot Walsh 22-8. The Cavs gave a brilliant effort in defeat.
Walsh renews its rivalry with Malone (3-8-1, 0-2), at Walsh, on Tuesday (4 pm). The Cavs lead the all-time series 29-10, with one tie and have won the last two meetings. Walsh travels to Houghton College, NY (1-9) on Saturday (4 pm). Houghton leads the all-time series 9-2 and won 2-1 in overtime last season.
Senior goalie Eric Brockmeier has allowed just six goals in ten games, with three shutouts in 900 minutes and has an 0.60 goals against average. Sam Hayes (So., Blackburn, ENG/St. Augestines) leads the team in scoring with seven goals and 17 points. Ryan Inama (Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) is second in scoring with 12 points and leads the team in assists with six.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (6-3-1, 3-0) Start 3-0 in AMC South
Walsh (6-3-1, 3-0) continued its fine start in American Mideast Conference South play by defeating Ohio Dominican University 3-1 last week. The Cavs are tied with Tiffin University (3-0) for first place and one-half game ahead of Mount Vernon Nazarene (2-0). The Cavs only loss last week was a 1-0 overtime defeat at Roberts Wesleyan. This week the Cavs renew their cross-town rivalry with Malone College and play host to Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday.
Walsh remained unbeaten in conference play after downing Ohio Dominican University 3-1 last Tuesday. The win was the third straight for Walsh.. Walsh led 2-1 at the half on goals from Abby Swope (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) and Leya Spence (Fr., Mansfield, OH/Madison). Amanda Waltz (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) assisted on Swope's tally and Chrissy Perna (Fr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) on the Spence goal. Stephany Quinn (Sr., Mississsauga, ONT/St. Joseph) closed the scoring on a penalty kick in the second half. Kathy Stuck (So., Uniontown, OH/Lake) played the entire 90 minutes and stopped five shots. Roberts Wesleyan snapped Walsh's mini win streak, 1-0 in overtime on Saturday. Wesleyan scored the games only tally five minutes into the first overtime.
Abby Swope leads the Cavs in scoring with nine goals and four assists for 22 points. Amanda Waltz is second with six goals and four assists for 16 points and Chrissy Perna is next with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Audra Smail (So., Navarre, OH/Central Catholic) has an 0.79 goals against average in six games and Kathy Stuck has a 1.73 average in seven games.
Walsh and Malone (4-7, 1-2) meet for the tenth time, all-time, on Wednesday at Malone at 4 pm. The game was
changed from its original 7 pm start. Malone leads the all-time series 5-4 and won 2-1 last season. Walsh and Mount Vernon Nazarene (8-3, 2-0) meet for the sixth time, with the Cougars holding a 3-2 advantage. Mount Vernon won 2-1 last season.
VOLLEYBALL: Cavs (14-6, 3-2) Upset Mount Vernon Nazarene, Start Win Streak/Herr Player of Week
Walsh (14-6, 3-2) bounced back from a disappointing loss at Urbana University to upset Mount Vernon Nazarene University on the road last Tuesday. The Cavs then defeated Shawnee State and Mount Union to close out a 3-0 week. This Tuesday, they renew their rivalry with Malone College on Tuesday (7 pm) and host defending American Mideast Conference South champion Cedarville University (22-1, 7-0) on Friday night (7 pm).
Walsh rallied to down Mount Vernon Nazarene University three games to two. Mount Vernon took game one 30-28. Walsh came back to even the match with a 30-22 win in game two. The Cougars regained the advantage, with a 30-28 win in the third game. Walsh then rallied, winning game four 30-27 and the deciding game 17-15. Jamie Herr (5-9, Jr., Attica, OH/Seneca East) led the attack with 26 kills and 26 digs. Jillian Barry (5-5, So, Salem, OH/HS) dished out 75 assists and added 11 digs. Erica Parker (6-0, Fr., Concord, OH/Mentor) had four aces and 16 kills, while hitting .360 and Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Fr., Mason, OH/HS) had two blocks along with 19 kills. Megan McDonald (5-10, Fr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) also added 19 kills.
Walsh defeated conference rival, Shawnee State University in three games on Friday. Walsh won 30-18, 30-20, and 30-18. The Cavaliers were led by Jamie Herr's 14 kills and 11 digs. Heather Hernandez (5-9, So., Oakdale, CA/HS) also chipped in 11 digs, with Megan McDonald adding 11 kills and Erica Parker 13 kills. Jillian Barry led with 38 assists and four aces and had 10 digs.
Walsh stretched their win streak to three matches with a four-game win over Mount Union College at home on Saturday . The Cavs were led by Jamie Herr, who had a career-high 30 kills and 20 digs. Erica Parker added 14 kills and Megan McDonald 11. Jillian Barry had 59 assists and 14 digs and Heather Hernandez added 12 digs. Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Fr., Mason, OH/HS) pitched in four block assists.
Walsh and Malone meet for the 57th time, all-time, with Walsh leading the series 38-17, with one tie. Walsh has won the last seven matches between the two teams. Walsh and Cedarville meet for the 33rd time, all-time, with Walsh holding a 22-10 series advantage. The Yellow Jackets, however, have won the last three meetings.
Jamie Herr leads the Cavs with a 4.27 kills per game average. She has 282 kills and this past week was named AMC Position Player of the Week. Herr averaged 5.83 kills, with a .307 attack percentage and 4.50 digs in the Cavs 3-0 week. Megan McDonald is second in total kills and is averaging 3.81 per game. Jillian Barry is dishing out 12.94 kills per game and Heather Hernandez is averaging 3.44 digs per game.
