Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference - "Save World History in Ohio"

Date(s): Mar. 23, 2013 - Mar. 23, 2013
Event Time: 12 PM - 1:30 PM

The Walsh Honor Society of History Alpha Nu Sigma will host the annual 2013 Ohio Phi Alpha Theta Regional Conference at Walsh University's Barrette Business and Community Center. This year's conference theme will focus on the movement to "Save World History in Ohio's Schools" and will feature Dr. Brad Maguth, Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education from The University of Akron.

The public is invited to attend the conference luncheon from 12 noon until 1:30 pm that will focus on the controversial decision by the Ohio State Legislature and the Ohio Department of Education to not include World History as a required course for high school graduation beginning in 2014. Tickets are $15 per person for the luncheon and registration is required online at http://walshphialphatheta.eventbrite.com/ by March 15.

As a part of the conference, all local K-12 Social Studies teachers are invited to attend a teaching session from 1:45- 2:45 pm.

Dr. Maguth was featured in the National Council for the Social Studies' The Social Studies Professional and on WKYC Ch. 3 Newsin leading the petition "to ensure that World History is an essential part of the social studies curriculum in schools, and a required course for high school graduation in the State of Ohio." In support of the movement, Ohio Senator Frank LaRose announced on February 28 that he will introduce legislation to add a World History requirement for Ohio High School graduation.
