Chapel - Our Lady of Perpetual Help

The Walsh University Chapel, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, is named in honor of the patroness of the Brothers of Christian Instruction - Walsh's founders.

In 1960, The Brothers relocated their college in Maine to Ohio. LaMennais College in Alfred, Maine, became Walsh College in North Canton, Ohio, and, in 1993, Walsh University.

Since its founding, the Brothers have continued a dedicated mission to Walsh University, affirming others by assisting them to develop their intellectual and spiritual gifts so that they, in turn, can become persons who serve others.

Their vowed life, with the person of Jesus as focal point, makes them available to meet today's needs, particularly those of Christian education and related areas.

As a result of substantial personal sacrifice, the Brothers have overcome many hardships over the years, allowing Walsh University to prosper.

The time has come for a free-standing chapel on Walsh University's campus. Originally located in a meeting room in the Rannou Campus Center (Now the Barrette Business and Community Center), the Walsh Chapel is now located in that building's former snack bar space. Though functional in service, the present Walsh University Chapel is inadequate in fully serving the needs of Walsh's more than 2,000 students, faculty, and staff as well as our community. The presence of a free-standing chapel is both physically and spiritually significant, serving the Walsh community as a center of worship, sacrament and religious education.

Walsh University broke ground for the new chapel on October 1, 2004. The facility will serve as a living commitment to the Catholic Heritage of Walsh University as well as a fitting memorial to decades of service by the Brothers of Christian Instruction. The complex will offer space for mass and other liturgical services, quiet contemplation, prayer, theological formation, and Bible study. This religious center is also designed to house the Institute for Justice and Peace, The Catholic Studies Institute, community meeting space, faculty and staff offices, as well as the chaplain's office and campus ministry services.

Perhaps the oldest icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help is an enduring shrine commemorating the holy mother of Jesus. With its heavenly portrayal of the Virgin mother holding the baby Jesus as Archangels Gabriel and Michael look on in the background, the icon invites us to seek the glory of the Kingdom of God.
