About Cicerone Hotel
The Colosseum
One of the greatest accomplishments of Roman engineering and architecture, The Colosseum sits in the heart of Rome as the largest visible reminder of the ancient city. This elliptical amphitheater was built to give favors to successful legionnaires and to celebrate the glory of the Roman Empire. Its design concept still stands to this very day, and virtually every modern sports stadium some 2,000 years later still bears the irresistible imprint of the Colosseum’s original design. Today, through films and history books, we are even more aware of the battles and games that took place in this legendary arena, all for the joy of the spectators.
The Roman Forum
The Roman Forum is located in a valley that is between the Palatine hill and the Capitoline hill. It originally was a marsh, but the Romans drained the area and turned it into a center of political and social activity. The Forum was the marketplace of Rome and also the business district and civic center. It was expanded to include temples, a senate house and law courts. When the Roman Empire fell, the Forum became forgotten, buried and was used as a cattle pasture during the Middle Ages. The arch of Titus and the arch of Septimius Severus still stand in the Forum.
St. Peter’s Basilica
St. Peter’s Basilica is a major basilica in Vatican City, an enclave of Rome. St. Peter’s was until recently the largest church ever built covering an area of 23,000 square meters and having a capacity to fit more than 60,000 guests. It remains one of the holiest sites in Christendom. Ancient tradition has it that St. Peter’s Basilica was built at the place where Peter, the apostle who is considered the first pope, was crucified and buried; his tomb is under the main altar. Other popes are also buried in and below the basilica. Contrary to what one might reasonably assume, St. Peter’s is not a cathedral – the pope’s cathedral is St. John Lateran.
The Catacombs of St. Domitilla
A truly remarkable site, the Catacombs of St. Domitilla are spread over 15 kilometers of underground caves some of which are inaccessible – They are laid out on two levels – one on top of another and with a third level in two distinct areas. The catacombs of the Eternal City offer one of the most complete and eloquent pictures of the Christian community in Imperial Rome, and of Catholicism in the city between the 3rd and 9th centuries. Until the 3rd century, in fact, the early Christians didn’t have their own cemeteries but were buried alongside the pagans in communal burial grounds outside the city along the main consular roads. The Apostle Peter was buried on the Vatican hill and St. Paul along the road to Ostia.
Castel Gandalfo
Situated on high ground above Lake Albano, Castel Gandolfo, a small and beautiful city most notably known as the summer residence of the Pope. It is also home to Walsh University’s Rome campus and home to the Brothers of Christian Instruction. The city became a direct possession of the pope towards the end of the XVIth century. The pope’s palace built in 1624 by Carlo Maderno. Stringent environmental regulations have limited the number of modern buildings overlooking the lake keeping the quaint and historic city true to its historic roots. There are several restaurants in the town and several establishments offer you the chance to taste and buy wine, meat and other local specialties. The town is picturesque, offering good photo-opportunities and a chance to appreciate Italian small-town atmosphere.
