Location: Stay at our beautiful campus in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, a historic and picturesque town overlooking gorgeous Lake Albano. Castel Gandolfo is home to the Pope’s summer residence and the village's cobblestone streets are filled with cafes and shops. The enchanting "Eternal City" of Rome is only 15 miles away.

Course Descriptions


Rome: Stories and Traditions  3 credit hours

Satisfies Tier II, Heritage 2b requirement

“All roads lead to Rome;” this course asks: why? Why had a small group of shepherd’s hamlets

 

The Art and Culture of Rome  3 credit hours

Satisfies Tier I Fine Arts requirement 

Surveys the art and culture of Rome from ancient to contemporary periods. The course examines many aspects of artistic and cultural expression, but focuses especially on visual arts, architecture and music.

 

Italian Myths: A Philosophical Reading  3 credit hours

The course addresses seven questions: 1. What is a myth? 2. What are myths for?  3. What are the principal Etruscan myths and what do they mean? 4. What are the principal Roman myths and what do they mean? 5. What happened to Etruscan and Roman myths during the Italian Middle Ages? 6. What happened to Etruscan, Roman and Medieval Italian myths during the Italian Renaissance? 7. What happened to the history of Italian myths in the Modern and Contemporary age? In an effort to address these questions, this course examines select Etruscan, Roman, Italian Medieval, Italian Renaissance, modern Italian and contemporary Italian myths and legends in light of  the New Science of the 18th century Italian philosopher, Giambattista Vico (1668-1744).  

Elementary Italian (101 or 102 level) 3 credit hours

 

Independent Study (optional)  3 credit hours

*Tuition, room, board, and general fees for Fall 2008 are subject to final approval by the Board of Directors. Rome Program Fee is subject to change depending on currency fluctuations and site visits planned for each session.

Eligibility Criteria

  • At least 21 Walsh credit hours earned at the time of application
  • 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Good social standing

Students requesting an exception must follow these steps:

  • Write a formal letter to Dr. Mark Rogers, Director of International Learning, requesting an exception and explaining how the program will benefit the student academically and personally
  • Obtain a letter from the faculty advisor or another professor in support of the student’s participation and vouching for the student’s ability to complete the coursework

 The Director of International Learning will inform you if your exception has been granted.
