Softball Rules


1. Only Walsh students, faculty, staff, and alumni are eligible to play.
2. Players must also be eligible by not currently being on the roster of the University's Softball or Baseball team.
3. Only players on the official team roster may participate in the game.
4. After 2 games, the roster is locked and no more players can be added.
5. Players are allowed to play on only one team per sport's league.
6. All players are required to have a signed waiver of liability on file with Intramurals for the current sport.
7. Each team shall field and bat ten (10) players, with a maximum of 12 players on the roster. You can sub people into the game, but they must play an entire inning before they can be subbed out.
8.  Each team is required to have at least 2 females participating in the game at all times.
9. Athletic shoes or rubber cleats can be worn. Metal cleats are prohibited.
10. The games will be played at the Vasity Softball Field and at Hoover Park, across the street.
11. Players will be expected to provide their own gloves (Intramurals will provide wooden bats).
12. The offensive team, who is batting, supplies the pitcher. Each batter will get two pitches only and must put the ball into play with the two pitches or they are out. If the pitcher is hit by a hit ball, it will count as a strike. All pitches must be underhand.
13. The games will be 7 innings, or 50 minutes. At the 45 minute mark, no new inning can begin.
14. Mercy Rule will be in effect for 15+ runs after the 5th inning.
15. No diving or sliding into bases and no leads or stealing of bases. Runners also can not run into players in the field at any point or for any reason.  Contact initiated by the runner will result in the runner being called out and possible suspension from the game.
16. Any overthrown ball that stays in bounds, runners advance at their own discretion. Any overthrown ball going out of bounds, runners get the base they were going to, plus one.
17. Teams will be allowed a maximum of 10 runs per inning.
18. Teams will be allowed a maximum of 5 home runs per game, after that, each home run will be a double.
19. Balls hit behind the cone/fence line will count as a homerun.
20. Officials on the field will make the final calls for base runners and batters.
21. Unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated and persons involved may be subject to ejection from the game or league and may also face judicial action. This behavior will be interpreted at the discretion of the officials.
22. At the completion of regular season play the top 4 teams will advance to the playoffs to be played over the next two weeks.
