Dodgeball Rules

I. General Information:

  • Only Walsh students, faculty, staff, and alumni are eligible to play.
  • Only players on the official team roster may participate in the game.
  • After 1 game, the roster is locked and no more players can be added.
  • Players are allowed to play on only one team per sports league.
  • All players are required to have a signed waiver of liability on file with Intramurals for the current sport.
  • Each team is allowed 8 players on the court at one time, with a maximum of 12 people on the roster.
  • Teams must have at least 7 players (with 2 girls) to start a game.
  • If teams only have one girl they can start the game but must start with two less players
  • Each team must start each game with 2 Girls on the floor.
  • A match consists of the best of 3 games. Each game will last a maximum of 6 minutes.
  • All jewelry must be removed.
  • Players must wear clean athletic shoes in the gym. (If weather is bad outside, with rain, snow, or muddy conditions, please bring a second pair of shoes to wear inside)

II. Objective:  Eliminate all opposing players by getting them "out". A player is declared out if:

  • You hit an opponent (anywhere on the body, including the head) with a thrown ball, before it hits the ground.
  • You catch an opponent's thrown ball before it makes contact with the ground
  • If you cross over any boundary lines, including the backline when not retrieving a ball.

III. Ways to Win:

  • Eliminate you entire opposing team before time is up.
  • Have more team players left on the court when time is up.

IV. Rules:

  • Games will be played on the basketball court in the PE Building.
  • Officials will place balls at the foul line for each team. Players must start behind their own baseline before the start of play.
  • Teams and players are confined to the lines of the court.
  • Players may intentionally leave the playing area on their own side of the playing floor to retrieve a ball. If a player goes out of bounds to avoid getting hit, they will be called out.
  • The centerline is the offside line. When throwing the ball, a player must not have either foot across the line.
  • Players will be called out if a ball they throw is caught. Every time a player catches a ball, only one of their team members may re-enter the game.
  • Deflections off the floor, wall, court dividers, rafters, bleachers, hoops, and officials do not count as an out if caught. Deflection off of a teammate does count, and both players are out, if the ball is dropped.
  • If a ball hits another ball, which a player has in their possession, it does not make either player out. If the ball is dropped as a result of contact from the thrown ball, then the player who drops the ball is out.
  • If a ball hits another ball, which a player has in their possession and that ball is caught by a teammate the person who threw the ball is out. If a ball hits another ball, which a player has in their possession and that ball hits a teammate and they do not catch it, the person who was hit is out.
  • Once a player is out, they must immediately leave the floor and sit on their teams bench.
  • In the event of a tie at the end of regulation time, there will be sudden death overtime with the whole team. The first team to eliminate an opponent is out.
Unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated and persons involved may be subject to ejection from the game or league and may also face judicial action. This behavior will be interpreted at the discretion of the officials.
