Volleyball Rules
I. Field, Players, Equipment
- Only Walsh students, faculty, staff, and alumni are eligible to play.
- Players must also be eligible by not currently being on the roster of the University's Volleyball team.
- Only players on the official team roster may participate in the game.
- After 2 games, the roster is locked and no more players can be added.
- Players are allowed to play on only one team per sport's league.
- All players are required to have a signed waiver of liability on file with Intramurals for the current sport.
- Each team MUST start the game with 6 players and two of the players MUST be girls, with 12 players maximum per team roster.
- Players must wear clean athletic shoes in the gym. (If weather is bad outside, with rain, snow, or muddy conditions, please bring a second pair of shoes to wear inside)
II. The Game
- There one game played between the two teams with a rally scoring format to 35 points.
- A rally point format will be used. Teams do not have to be serving to score points.
- The team that wins the coin toss will start off serving first. That server will continue to serve until the other team wins the serve.
- There will be no timeouts. Officials may stop or pause the game for injury or other just cause.
- You can serve overhand or underhand, but both feet must be behind the back line.
- No cradling or carrying the ball with your hands when you go to hit it.
- Net serves constitute a point for the other team and the team that served the net ball, losses their serve.
- Net balls during play are considered live and playable.
- Balls touching boundary lines will be considered in.
- Volleyballs touching ceiling, lights, or other structures in the gym are considered in, except if they hit one of the 4 side walls.
- You can not spike the ball when returning a serve.
- When you go to spike a ball, you may cross over the net, but you may not hit the net with your body or arm.
- When you go to block a ball from coming over the net, you may not touch the net or cross over the net.
- Officials reserve the right to call a re-serve at their discretion for questionable calls.
- Unsportsmanlike behavior will not be tolerated and persons involved may be subject to ejection from the game or league and may also face judicial action. This behavior will be interpreted at the discretion of the officials.
