Marc Pullen (So., Akron, OH/Ellet) threw three touchdown passes and passed for 192 yards in the come-from-behind win and Rob Lash (Jr., Shelby, OH/HS) caught four passes, two for TDs, for 99 yards. Walsh fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter, before Pullen hit Lash for a 50-yard score at the 12:46 mark of the second period. Walsh then took the lead a 12-10, when Pullen hit John Rutan (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) on a 30-yard scoring strike with 4:13 to play in the half. Walsh then tacked on six more points in the second quarter, when Jeff Tallman (Fr., Canton, OH/Perry) scored on a one-yard run. The only points of the second half came on a safety, when USF tossed the ball over the punters head with 12:15 to play and when Pullen hit Lash again, this time from 33 yards out. Antwain Reine (Jr., Dayton, OH/Trotwood-Madison) rushed for over 100 yards for the second straight week with 105. Tallman gained 61 yards. For the second straight week, the Cavs lost a starter due to injury, when Rutan suffered a broken leg after catching a pass in the waning moments of the first half. The Cavs received outstanding efforts from inside linebackers Lucas Grove (Sr., Uhrichsville, OH/Claymont) and University of Akron transfer Bryan Howe (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) and outside backer Dan Dale (Sr., Canton, OH/South). Each had 13 tackles, with Grove having two tackles for a loss and Howe and Dale one each. This week, the Cavs meet West Virginia Tech (0-2) for the first time. Tech lost to NCAA DI-AA McNeese State 76-0 on Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network at 11:45 am, on 900 AM WCER. Kick-off is a 12 pm. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY (8-0): Cavs at National Catholic Meet After being idle last week, Walsh (8-0) travels to South Bend, Indiana for the annual National Catholic Meet at Notre Dame on Friday. Walsh finished fourth in the division two field last year. Two weeks ago, the Cavs opened the season with a convincing win at the Fisher Invitational at Westminster College. Brendan McKee (So., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary), a NAIA National Qualifier last year, won the race in a time of 27:20. In all, the Cavs captured four out of the top ten places. WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTY (8-3): Cavs at National Catholic Meet After being idle last week, Walsh (8-3) travels to South Bend, Indiana for the annual National Catholic meet at Notre Dame on Friday. The Cavs placed 11th at Notre Dame last year. Walsh opened the season two weeks ago with a fourth place finish at the 12-team Fisher Invitational at Westminster College. Lauren Blase (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with a 10th place in a time of 20:19 and Kristen LeFever (Fr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) was right behind Blase, with an 11th place finish in a time of 20:21. MEN'S SOCCER (3-1): Cavs Post Back-to-Back Home Wins Walsh extended its modest win streak to three games, with home wins over Daemen College (3-0) and Saint Francis (IN) (5-0). All three wins have been shutouts for the Cavs. This week, the Cavs play at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday (5 pm) and travel to Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday (1 pm). Walsh won its first home night game, with the shutout of Daemen (3-0) on Friday. The Cavs led 2-0 at the half, as Leon O'Neil (Sr., Blackburn, England/Nordan) scored on an assist from Aaron Davis (Fr., Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale) and Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) on an assist from Greg Keller (Jr., Napolean, OH/HS). Alex Birtcher (So., Napolean, OH) scored the lone goal of the second half on an assist from Alex Mogilnicki (Jr., Lakemore, OH/Springfield). Goalkeeper Ben Pflum (So., Napolean, OH/HS) recorded his second straight win, stopping six shots. Five different Cavaliers scored in the win over Saint Francis. Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) scored twice, and dished out two assists and Greg Keller and Leon O'Neil each scored and handed out an assist. Casey Eck and Aaron Davis (Fr., Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale) had the Cavs other goals. Pflum recorded his third straight shutout and lowered his goals against average to 0.75. Walsh out shot USF 22-7. The last time the Cavs recorded three shutouts in a row was 2001 (St. Vincent, Daemen, and Urbana). WOMEN'S SOCCER (1-2): Cavs Earn First Win Walsh picked up its first win of the season, defeating Saint Francis (IN) 2-1 on Saturday. The Cavs are on the road twice this week, at Saint Vincent (3 pm) on Tuesday and at Shawnee State for their American Mideast Conference South opener on Saturday (2 pm). Haley Rogers (So., Green, OH/HS) scored both Walsh goals in the first half in the win against the Cougars. The first tally, on a breakaway, came at the 21:39 mark and the second, at the 31:40 mark. Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) turned in a fine performance between the pipes, stopping ten shots. USF out shot Walsh 18-10. VOLLEYBALL (11-1): Cavs Continue Roll, Win St. Xavier Tournament Walsh (11-1) extended its winning streak to six games, with victories over Mount Union and at the Saint Xavier Tournament in Chicago. This week, the Cavs meet Notre Dame College in their home opener on Tuesday (7 pm), and then travel to the Taylor University Invitational in Upland, Indiana over the weekend. The Cavs play twice on Friday and on Saturday. Walsh handled Mount Union College in three straight games, 30-24, 30-17, 30-18 last Tuesday. The Cavaliers had three players in double digit kills. Megan McDonald (5-10, So., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) led with 17 kills and a .419 hitting percentage. Erica Parker (6-0, So., Concord, OH/Mentor) and Jamie Herr (5-9, Sr., Attica, OH/Seneca East) both added 10 kills. Jillian Barry (5-5, Jr., Salem, OH/HS) led with 39 assists and Heather Hernandez (5-9, Jr., Oakdale, CA/HS) added 24 digs. Walsh improved to 9-1, after defeating Tiffin University and Olivet Nazarene at the Saint Xavier University Tournament on Friday. The Cavs downed Tiffin in three straight games, 30-18, 30-20, and 30-26. Jamie Herr paced the Cavs with 19 kills, Jillian Barry had 44 assists and Heather Hernandez added 20 digs. Megan McDonald also added 13 kills and Amy Police contributed 11 digs. Walsh then rallied to defeat ONU in five games, 20-30, 30-18, 26-30, 30-23 and 15-13. There were three Cavaliers in double digit kills. McDonald led with 21, while Herr and Erica Parker each added 17. Barry dished out 65 assists, Hernandez had 22 digs, and Jennifer Carona (5-4, So., Canton, OH/Perry) led with three aces. Herr also had a double-double with 15 digs, while Police contributed on the defensive end with a career-high 17 digs. Walsh concluded the weekend by winning the Saint Xavier Tournament on Saturday. It marks the second tournament win for the Cavs this season. Walsh defeated Park University 30-28, 27-30, 23-30, 30-28 and 15-7 in the first match of the day. The Cavaliers had five players in double digit kills. Megan McDonald led with 24, Jamie Herr added 22, Erica Parker 11, and Danielle Evancho (5-11, Fr., Strongsville, OH/HS) and Laura Galbraith (6-0, Fr., Akron, OH/Revere) each had 10. Jillian Barry dished out 56 assists and Heather Hernandez had 27 digs. Herr also had 26 digs and Amy Police added 10. Walsh then defeated host Saint Xavier in four games, 20-30, 30-25, 30-25 and 30-12. McDonald again paced the Cavs with 18 kills, while Barry had 48 assists. Herr led with 16 digs and Caitlin Doon (5-6, Jr., Columbus, OH/DeSales) added 14. Parker recorded 11 kills. |
