FOOTBALL: Cavs (1-1, 1-0) Open MSFA Season With Road Win

NAIA No. 21 ranked Walsh (1-1, 1-0) opened the Mid-States Football Association season with a 35-17 Mideast League win at Ohio Dominican University (1-1, 0-1) on Saturday.  This Saturday, Walsh opens the home season against Olivet Nazarene University at 11 am at Fawcett Stadium.  Free tickets are available at the Giant Eagle store at Washington Square, right across from Walsh.  Magnet schedules will be given out to the first 1,000 fans. At halftime, Walsh will honor its champions from the 2004-05 academic year.  Walsh will honor its championship teams, which include Baseball, Men's Tennis, Women's Golf and the 2004-05 NAIA National Champion Men's Basketball Team.  Also being recognized are the top student-athletes from each individual sport from the 2005 spring semester and the Female (Ruth Kucklick - Volleyball) and Male (Chad Lahna - Baseball) Athletes of the Year.  The Hudson High School Band will also be on hand.

Walsh jumped to a 12-0 first quarter lead on a pair of one-yard runs from Antwain Reine' (So., Dayton, OH/Trotwood Madison).  Reine' led the Cavs ground attack with 114 yards on 24 carries.  Ohio Dominican then scored twice to trim the Cavs lead to 12-10.  Walsh would add two more scores in the first half, one on a 10-yard pass from Dan Kane (Sr., Bolivar, OH/Tusky Valley) to Rob Lash (So., Shelby, OH/HS) and the other on a 25-yard field goal from Arthur Zurcher (Fr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) and led 22-10 at halftime. Ohio Dominican closed to within 22-17 on a score at the end of the third quarter, but Walsh's Rob Lash returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a score to open the final period.  Walsh then added an insurance TD on a 17-yard pass from Kane to Donel Durham (Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/Schenley).  Kane completed 9-13 for 92 yards.  Durham had four catches for 42 yards.

Walsh and Olivet Nazarene University will be meeting for the fourth time.  Walsh won 27-19 at Olivet last season and lead the all-time series 2-1.  The Tigers have opened the season with back-to-back wins.  They defeated Anderson University 33-18 in their season opener and downed Lindenwood University 23-7 last Saturday. ONU tailback Billy Lawrence has rushed for 222 yards in the first two games on 44 carries and scored five touchdowns.  Quarterback Joe Boseo has completed 37-59 passes for 379 yards and two scores.  The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network on stations 900 AM WCER and News-Talk 640 AM WHLO at 10:45 am.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs (1-8) Compete at Youngstown State Invitational

The Cavs (1-8) have a busy week coming up.  They will be in Youngstown, Ohio on Monday and Tuesday for the Penguins Invitational.  The play will tee off at 1 pm on Monday and 9 am on Tuesday at the Avalon South Golf Course.  Then on Friday, they travel to Urbana University for the Blue Knights Invitational, with tee off set for 10 am at Woodlands Golf Course.  The Cavs were idle last week and finishing ninth at the Robert Morris Invitational in Chicago, Ill. on September 2.  

MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (3-0-1) Remain Unbeaten

Walsh (3-0-1) remained unbeaten after defeating Siena Heights University and battling NAIA ranked Judson University to an overtime tie in the Walsh Invitational this past weekend.  The Cavs hit the road for the first time this week.  They plat at Daemen College on Wednesday (4 pm) and in Indiana over the weekend.  Walsh battles Grace College at 2 pm on Saturday and St. Francis at 4 pm on Sunday.

Walsh improved to 3-0 after shutting out Siena Heights University 3-0 on Friday.  Kevin Hadley (Sr., Norton, OH/HS) gave the Cavs a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season at the 23-minute mark of the first half.  Zeljko Vasiljevic (So., Akron, OH/Walsh Jesuit) then gave Walsh a 2-0 with at the 48-minute mark of the second half and Ryan Inama (Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) scored the games final goal on an assist from Alex Moglinicki (So., Lakemore, OH/Springfield) at the 80-minute mark.  For Walsh, it was their second shutout in three games.

Walsh and Judson College (3-2-1) battled to a hard-fought 1-1 double overtime tie on Saturday.  The  Cavs Ryan Inama (Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) gave the Cavs a 1-0 lead, 13 minutes into the game on an assist from Dan Harlan (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Green) and Anthony Vituccio (Sr., Marietta, OH).  The lead held until the final six minutes, when Judson rallied and tied the game on a goal from Diego Rossi and assist from Carlos Guillen.  This well executed, hard-fought contest then ended in an 1-1 deadlock after two ten-minute scoreless overtimes.  Judson out shot the Cavs 15-10, corner kicks were 4-4.  Walsh goalkeeper Eric Brockmeier (Sr., Marietta, OH/HS) recorded 12 saves.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (2-0-1, 1-0) Win AMC South Opener

Walsh opened American Mideast Conference South Division play with a 4-2 win at the University of Rio Grande on Saturday.  The unbeaten Cavs hit the road three times this week.  Walsh plays at Muskingum College on Wednesday (4 pm), at Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday night (7 pm) and at St. Francis (IN) on Saturday (4:30 pm).

Walsh rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to defeat the University of Rio Grande in the AMC South Division opener for both teams.  Chrissy Perna (5-8, Fr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) scored the first of her two goals in the first half, at the 18:12 mark on an assist from Abby Swope (5-7, So., Wadsworth, OH/HS).  Perna then knotted the game at 2-2 on an assist from Leya Spence (5-6, Fr., Mansfield, OH/Madison) at the 37:09 mark of the second half.  Amanda Waltz (5-2, So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) then gave the Cavs the lead for good at 3-2 on an assist from Swope at the 13:40, then added an insurance goal for the final tally.  Walsh out shot the Redwomen 32-3, in dropping Rio to 1-2 overall and to 0-1 in the AMC South.  Kathy Stuck (5-7, So., Uniontown, OH/Lake) was in net in the first half for the Cavs and Audra Smail (5-5, So., Navarre, OH/Canton Central Catholic) in the final 45 minutes.

VOLLEYBALL: Cavs (6-2) Third at Madonna Tournament/Hernandez, McDonald Named to All-Tourney Team

NAIA ranked Walsh (votes) won three of four matches last week and finished third at the Madonna Invitational. This week, the Cavs open American Mideast Conference South play at home against Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday at 7 pm.  They then travel to the St. Francis (Ill.) tournament on Friday and Saturday.  The Cavs play Indiana Wesleyan at 6:15 pm on Friday and St. Francis at 8:30.  On Saturday, they tangle with Grand View at 10 am and William Penn at 12:15 pm.

Walsh swept Geneva College in their first home match of the season on Tuesday.  The Cavaliers beat Geneva 30-22, 30-24, and 30-13.  Walsh was lead by junior outside hitter, Jamie Herr (5-9, Attica, OH/Seneca East), with 14 kills.  Jillian Barry (So., 5-5, Salem, OH/HS) dished out 37 assists and freshman Meagan Buffington (5-7, Solon, OH/HS) lead with 14 digs.  Erica Parker (6-0, Concord, OH/Mentor) and Buffington both served up two aces.  Herr and Katie Vellucci (Jr., 5-8, Canton, OH/GlenOak) finished the match with 1.5 blocks.

Walsh split their first two matches at the Madonna Invitational on Friday.  Georgetown College (Ky.) downed the Cavs 30-26, 30-32, 23-30, 22-30.  Walsh then dumped Daemen 30-15, 30-14, 30-17.  Jamie Herr led the Cavs with 14 kills and 18 digs and Jillian Barry dished out 46 assists in the Georgetown match.  Megan McDonald (5-10, Fr., Kirkland, Ill/Rockford Lutheran) paced the Cavs with 21 kills in the win over Daemen.  Herr led with 16 digs and Barry had 22 assists. 

The Cavs split their final two matches on Saturday.  Heather Hernandez (5-9, So., Oakdale, CA/HS) and Megan McDonald (5-10, Fr., Kirkland, Ill/Rockford Lutheran) were named to the All-Tournament Team.  Madonna swept the Cavs in their first match, 30-27, 30-26, 30-20.  McDonald led the Cavs with 18 kills, Jillian Barry handed out 30 assists and Hernandez had 27 digs.  Walsh then bounced back to defeat Saginaw Valley State 30-28, 30-23, 30-23.  Jamie Herr and Erica Parker each had 14 kills.  Herr added 21 digs and Barry had 43 assists.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs (8-0) at National Catholic Meet

Walsh (8-0) was idle this past week.  They return to action on Friday at the National Catholic Meet at Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.

Walsh captured five of the top ten places in breezing to their season opening win at Westminster two weeks ago.  Freshman Brendan McKee (Akron, OH/St. V-St. Mary) finished third in a time of 28:26.7 in pacing the Cavs.  Josh Rogers (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) was right behind McKee, finishing fourth in a time of (26:29.1).  Mike Groholy (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) was sixth (28:33.1), Joel Dagenhardt (Sr., Marlington, OH/HS) placed eighth (28:52.0) and Chris Zundel (Jr., Madison, OH/HS) tenth (28:52.0).

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs (6-3) at National Catholic Meet

Walsh (6-3) was idle this past week.  The Cavs return to action this Friday at the National Catholic Meet at Notre Dame in South Bend, IN.

Walsh opened the season with a fourth place finish at Westminster two weeks ago.  Freshman Andrea DiNinno (Harrison City, PA/Greensburg) paced the Cavs with an 8th place finish in a time of 20:04.4.  Katie Wirtz (So., Lakewood, OH/HS) raced to a 10th place finish in a time 20:23.4.  Lindsay Cooper (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) finished 14th (20:28.4), Tess Francis (Jr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) 23rd (21:11.2) and Ashley Miller (Jr., Kinsman, OH/Badger) 37th (21:52.8).
