FOOTBALL: Cavs (1-1) Even Mark with Road Win/Blossomgame, Williams Earn MSFA Player of Week Honors
Walsh evened its record at 1-1 with a 24-16 win at Quincy University in a Mid-States Football Association crossover game on Saturday. After playing two road games to open the season, the Cavs meet Ohio Dominican University (1-1) in the home opener this Saturday at 12 pm at Fawcett Stadium. Fans can still pick-up free tickets at the Giant Eagle store in Washington Square, right across from the Walsh campus.
Walsh scored first when Brian Williams (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) returned a Quincy punt 61-yards for a score with 1:36 to play in the first quarter. The two teams would then trade field goals in the second quarter. Quincy's Alex Beard booted a 38-yard field goal, which was followed by Eric Buchanan's (Jr., Lehigh Acers, FL/East Lee County) 40-yarder, which gave the Cavs a 10-3 lead with 9:54 to play in the second quarter. The Hawks then scored the equalizer (10-10) at the 4:40 mark of the second quarter on a 21-yard pass play.
Quincy would take their only lead of the game on Beard's 42-yard field goal with 9:46 to play in the third quarter. It was the only score of the period. Walsh would regain the lead for good at the 14:57 mark of the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by Clinton Blossomgame (Jr., Columbus, OH/Beechcroft). The key play of the drive was a fourth and eight completion from Jim Shiplett to Mike McGill (Sr., Barberton, OH/Coventry) for 23 yards to the Quincy nine-yard line. Blossomgame would then score the clincher, when he busted through for a 35-yard TD on a third and one play. Quincy tallied the final score at the 3:23 mark on a 23-yard field goal.
Blossomgame rushed for 137 yards on 18 carries, all in the second half. Shiplett was 9-21 passing for 99 yards. Joe Morgan (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley/Illinois) caught six passes for 67 yards and McGill caught two passes for 32 yards. Jason Stiel (Jr., Reynoldsburg, OH/HS) led the defense with 10 tackles and Chris Bivins (So., Alliance, OH/HS) had an interception.
Clinton Blossomgame and Brian Williams each earned MSFA Player of the Week honors. Blossomgame was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Williams the Special Teams Player of the Week. Williams returned two punts for 70 yards and two kicks for 60 yards.
Walsh tangles with Ohio Dominican University on Saturday. The Panthers, who were idle last week, are 1-1. They lost their season opener 14-13 to Bentley University on August 29, then rebounded for a 44-21 win over Seton Hill University on September 5. ODU defeated the Cavs 24-22 at Fawcett Stadium last year and have won the last two meetings. Walsh still owns a 3-2 series lead. At halftime, Walsh will recognize their 2008-09 Athletes of the Year, Megan McDonald (Volleyball) and Joe Shardo (Men's Basketball) and the top student-athletes from the spring semester. The game will be broadcast live on AM 900 WCER (www.wcer.us) and on NewsTalk 640 (www,640whlo.com).
