It was the first shutout for Walsh since 2004, when they blanked Ohio Dominican 41-0 in the season opener. After a scoreless first quarter, Walsh's Jeff Tallman (Fr./RS Canton OH/Perry) scored on a seven-yard run to give the Cavs a 7-0 lead (PAT Mike Lum) at the 10:13 mark of the second period. Walsh extended the lead to 14-0 on Antwain Reine's (Jr., Dayton, OH/Trotwood Madison) 15-yard scoring jaunt at the 5:45 mark of the first half. Reine' lead all ball carriers with 102 yards rushing on 19 attempts. Walsh's Mike Lum (Sr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) opened the third quarter with a 36-yard field goal to give Walsh a 17-0. The Cavs followed the field goal with two additional third quarter scores. Quarterback Mark Pullen (So., Akron, OH/Ellet) connected with Ron Lash (Jr., Shelby, OH/HS) on a 47-yard scoring pass and defensive back Rayshaun Kizer (Sr., Euclid, OH/HS) intercepted a Golden Bear pass and raced 42 yards for a score. The only score of the fourth quarter came on Pullen's one-yard sneak. Defensive back Craig McConnell (So., Massillon, OH/HS) led the defense with eight tackles, six solo and 2.5 for a loss. Lucas Grove (Sr., Uhrichsville, OH/Claymont) had seven tackles. Walsh held WV Tech to 166 yards total offense and minus one-yard rushing. Tech, who is 0-3, has not scored this season. The game was marred by a total 24 penalties. Antwain Reine' leads the Mid-States Football Association in rushing with a 116.3 per game average and with a 6.7 yards per carry average. Reine' has gained 349 yards and scored three touchdowns. Jeff Tallman has also scored three touchdowns. Walsh has outscored its opponents 108-26 and has allowed only 13 second half points and three touchdowns. Walsh travels to Florida to meet Webber International next Saturday. The Warriors improved to 2-1, with a 36-0 win over Campbellsville (KY) on Saturday. Ranir Rackley rushed for 94 yards and three touchdowns. The Warriors racked-up 460 yards total offense. This is the second meeting between the Cavs and Webber. Walsh won 31-21 at Fawcett Stadium last season. The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY (23-3): Cavs Fourth at National Catholic Cross Country Invitational Walsh (23-3) finished fourth in the 18-team field at the National Catholic Cross Country Invitational, held at the University of Notre Dame on Friday. Mike Groholy (Jr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) (Pictured top right) paced the Cavs with a 10th place finish in a time of 27:10. Brendan McKee (So., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) finished 15th (27:35), Jon Winnyk (So., Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) 27th (27:50), Chris Zundel (Sr., Madison, OH/HS) 31st (27:55), Andrew Schulz (Jr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) 45th (28:27), Josh Rogers (Jr., Hartville, OH/Lake) 46th (28:29) and Tyler Immel 68th (29:00). Other finishes include Tim Geabler (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) (29:15) and Sean McBride (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) (29:20). The Cavs are idle this week. WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTY (22-10) Walsh 8th at National Catholic Meet Walsh (22-10) finished eighth at the National Catholic Cross Country Invitational at the University of Notre Dame today. Lauren Blase (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) (Pictured top right) paced the Cavs with a 17th place finish in a time of 20:12. Kristen LeFever (Fr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) was next for the Cavs with a 34t place finish (20:40). Marie Pasuit (Fr., Stow, OH/HS) placed 49th (21:01), Andrea DiNinno (So., Harrison City, PA/Greensburg CC) 74th (21:47), Lindsay Cooper (Jr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) 80th (21:54), Jennifer Foster (Fr., Carrollton, OH/HS) 83rd (21:59), Katie Wirtz (Jr., Lakewood, OH/HS) 97th (22:16) and Tess Francis (Sr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) 100th (22:20). The Cavs are idle this week. MEN'S GOLF: Cavs Sixth at Malone College Fall Classic Walsh shot a final round 296 on Saturday, and finished sixth with a team score of 586 at the Malone College Fall Classic. The Cavs were third after Friday's first round. Malone won the classic with a 570. Sam Troyer (So., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) shot a final round 73 and finished with a two-day total of 143 and made the All-Tournament Team. Kevin Tournoux (Jr., Lakewood, OH/HS) fired a final round 71 and finished at 145. David Rose (Jr., Marietta, OH/HS) also shot a 71 on Saturday and finished at 146. Chad Coombes (Sr., Medina, OH/Buckeye) shot a second round 75 and finished 152 and Jesse Green (So., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) shot 81 and finished at 174. Walsh's "B" Team shot a two-day total of 611 (304-311) and finished sixth. Michael DiFabbio (Sr., Steubenville, OH/Central Catholic) shot 146 (72-76), Mike Lenartowicz (Jr., Canton, OH/Perry) 150 (75-75), David Russell (Sr., Glasgow, Scotland/Cumbernauld) 154 (76-78) and Alan Dattilio (Sr., Salem, OH/West Branch) 159 (81-78). WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs Finish Sixth at Youngstown State Invitational" Walsh (11-10) finished sixth at the Youngstown State Invitational at Avalon South Golf Course last Monday and Tuesday. Bowling Green State University won the rain soaked event, with a two-day total of 626. Walsh shot 337 the final day and finished with a two-day total of 679. Christine Haver (Jr., Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) fired a final round 82 and finished tied for 11th with a two-day total of 161. Kaley Foster (So., Manchester, OH/HS) tied for 25th, after shooting a final round 84 and finished with an 18-hole total of 169. Christina Trbovich (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) tied for 34th (86-90=176), Tammy Schumacher (Jr., Whitney Point, NY/HS) tied for 37th (87-81=178) and Andrea Ferriell (Sr., Hartville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished 48 (92-95=187). Stephanie Spitzer (So., Akron, OH/Green) finished 54th (103-99=202) as an individual and Kaitlin Sesock (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) 56th (105-103=208). The Cavs are idle this week. MEN'S SOCCER (4-2): Cavs Split Road Games Walsh (4-2) split a pair of non-conference road games last week. The Cavs lost a 1-0 heartbreaker at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday, but rebounded with a 2-0 win at Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday. This week, Walsh plays host to Myers University on Tuesday (7 pm), then opens the American Mideast Conference South season at the University of Rio Grande on Saturday. Rio Grande was ranked second in last week's NAIA Top 25. Walsh had its three-game win streak snapped 1-0 at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday. Jason Zielinski scored at the 74-minute mark for the games only tally. Shots on goal were even at 10-10 and Walsh led in corner kicks 9-4. Cavs' goalkeeper and AMC Defense Player of the Week, Ben Pflum (So., Napolean, OH/HS) had four saves. Walsh gained a split on the week, with their 2-0 whitewash of Roberts Wesleyan. Leon O'Neill (Sr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan) gave the Cavs a 1-0 at the 29-minute mark of the first half on an assist from Martin Wejcman (Sr., Buenos Aires, ARG/Ort). Alex Birtcher (So., Napolean, OH/HS) then scored an insurance goal with eight minutes to play, on an assist from O'Neill. Walsh out shot the home team 17-8 and led in corner kicks 10-1. Pflum stopped seven shots in recording his fourth shutout of the season. WOMEN'S SOCCER (1-4, 0-1): Cavs Fall Twice, Lose AMC South Opener Walsh fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the American Mideast Conference South, after dropping back-to-back games last week. The Cavs lost road games at Saint Vincent College and their conference opener at Shawnee State University. This week, the Cavs play at Myers University on Wednesday (3 pm) and host the University of Rio Grande, in their second conference game, on Saturday at 7 pm. Walsh lost 1-0 at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday. The Bearcats scored the only goal of the game at the 7:53 mark of the first half. Walsh out shot the Bearcats 14-8. Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had seven saves in goal for the Cavs. Despite out shooting Shawnee State 19-4, the Cavs lost its AMC South opener 1-0 at Shawnee State University on Saturday. After a scoreless half, Shawnee State scored the only goal of the game at the 53:00 minute mark of the second half. It appeared the Cavs tied the game five minutes later, but the goal was disallowed. Walsh has been out scored 12-3 in their first five games. VOLLEYBALL (16-1): Ranked Cavs Continue Roll, Win Taylor Tournament/Open AMC Slate on Tuesday The 24th NAIA ranked (Next ranking released on Wednesday) Cavs (16-1) continued to roll, extending their winning streak to 11 matches and capturing their third tournament title of the season. Walsh defeated Notre Dame College and then won the Taylor University Tournament over the weekend. This week, they open American Mideast Conference South play with home matches against Ohio Dominican University on Tuesday (7 pm) and against Tiffin University on Thursday (7 pm). Walsh opened the week by sweeping Notre Dame College in three games (30-19, 30-22, 30-9) on Tuesday. The Cavaliers were led by Megan McDonald (5-10, So., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) with 16 kills and Erica Parker (6-0, So., Concord, OH/Mentor) with 12. Jillian Barry (5-5, Jr., Salem, OH/HS), the AMC Setter of the Week, led the offensive attack with 42 assists. Jamie Herr (5-9, Sr., Attica, OH/Seneca East) had a team-high 13 digs and Caitlin Doon (5-6, Jr., Columbus, OH/DeSales) added 10. Parker, Barry, and Amy Police (5-5, Fr., Perry, OH/HS) each had two aces for the match. Walsh extended its winning streak to nine matches, by winning twice at the Taylor Invitational on Friday. The Cavs bounced Trinity International (3-8) in four games (30-20, 30-25, 25-30 and 30-27), then rallied to defeat host Taylor (11-7) in five games. Megan McDonald led the Cavs with 18 kills in the opening match win over Trinity. Jillian Barry dished out 61 assists, Heather Hernandez (5-9, Jr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had 27 digs and Erica Parker had three blocks. After taking game one 30-22 against Taylor, Walsh lost the next two games by scores of 25-30 and 28-30. Walsh would then rally to win the match by winning game four 30-15 and game five 15-12. Jamie Herr led the attack with 29 kills, Barry had 58 assists, Hernandez 31 digs and Parker three blocks. Walsh extended its winning streak to 11 and improved to 16-1, after defeating Campbellsville and Trinity Christian to win the Taylor University Tournament on Saturday. Walsh swept Campbellsville (10-2) 30-28, 30-25 and 30-28. Erica Parker led the Cavs with 15 kills, Jillian Barry handed 33 assists and Heather Hernandez 27 digs. In the final match, Walsh breezed by Trinity Christian 30-17, 30-15 and 30-15. Jamie Herr led with 10 kills, Barry handed out 34 assists and Hernandez had 17 digs. Jamie Herr and Megan McDonald were named to the All-Tournament Team. |
