FOOTBALL: Cavs (2-1, 1-0) Down Olivet Nazarene/Lash Special Teams Player of Week

NAIA No. 24 ranked Walsh (2-1, 1-0) improved to 2-1 after defeating Olivet Nazarene University 24-14 at Fawcett Stadium on Saturday.  The win was the second straight for the Cavs, and first the loss for the 22nd ranked Tigers. Olivet led 7-0 after scoring on the games first possession, driving 70 yards in 11 plays and scoring on a four-yard run by Jon Lochner.   But for the second straight week, Walsh's Rob Lash (So., Shelby, OH/HS) followed an opponent's TD with one of his own, as he returned the ensuing kick off a Walsh record 95 yards for a TD.  Lash was named Mid-States Football Association Mideast Special Teams Player of the Week.  The previous week, Lash followed an Ohio Dominican score with a 91-yard return for a TD.  Walsh took the lead for good (14-7) on their next possession, when Antwain Reine' (So., Dayton, OH/Trotwood Madison) broke loose for an 86-yard TD run.  The Cavs would tack on seven more points in the second quarter, when Dustin Stewart (Fr., Southeast, OH/Ravenna) scored from two yards out, to give Walsh a 21-7 halftime lead.  Walsh opened the third quarter with 12-play, 52-yard drive, which ended with an Arthur Zurcher (Fr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) 28-yard field goal.  The field goal was the Cavs only score of the second half.  Olivet tacked on a TD in the fourth quarter.  Reine' rushed for a game-high 172 yards on 19 carries.  Dan Kane (Sr., Bolivar, OH/Tusky Valley) completed 6-11 passes for 61 yards and Darryl Owens (Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) caught four passes for 38 yards. Linebacker Jon Raddish (Sr., Mogadore, OH/HS) led the Cavs with 14 tackles.  Joe Phinisee (DB, So., Warren, OH/Harding) had nine solo tackles and returned a fumble recovery 26 yards.

Reine' leads the Cavs with 365 yards rushing on 58 attempts for a 6.3 average per carry.  He is averaging 121.7 yards per game.  Lash leads the Cavs with 14 catches and three TDs and is averaging 48.8 per kick return with two TDs.  In the Walsh's first three games, they have allowed only two second half TDs.

The Cavs travel to Deerfield, Illinois for a MSFA crossover game with NAIA 12th ranked Trinity International (1-1) on Saturday at 2 pm (EST).  Trinity, a member of the MSFA Midwest League, fell 39-31 at Urbana University on Saturday.  Urbana scored three times in the third and fourth quarter to erase a 25-17 lead. The Trojans are averaging 28.5 points per game, but allowing 28.0 points.  Trinity leads the all-time with Walsh 3-1.  The Trojans beat the Cavs at Fawcett Stadium 23-22 last year.  Walsh's only win (24-21) in the series was in 1999 at home.  The Trojans have won the last three meetings and are 1-0 against the Cavs at home.  The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network on AM 900 WCER and AM 1350 WARF.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cavs (6-16) Second at Urbana Blue Knight Invitational/Shoot All-Time Low Round at YSU

Walsh (6-16) played twice last week and played well both times. The Cavs finished eight at Youngstown State and second at Urbana.  They are idle this week.

The Cavs placed finished eighth at the Youngstown State University Invitational.  Bowling Green State University won the event, which featured an extremely strong ten team field.  Walsh finished with a two-day total of 672.  The Cavs scored 335 today, after shooting 337 yesterday.  Their 335 is an all-time low for the Cavs.  Christine Haver (Jr., Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) fired an 83 today and tied for 30th, with a two-day total of 166 (83-83).  Tammy Schumacher (So., Whitney Point, NY/HS) tied for 31st. Schumacher shot 85 today and finished with a two-day total of 167 (82-85).  Kaley Foster (Fr., Manchester, OH/HS) tied for 35th with a 169 (83-86).  Stephanie Spitzer (Fr., Akron, OH/Green)  tied for 41st with a 174 (89-85) and Christina Trbovich (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley) tied for 47th with a 179 (97-82).  Andrea Ferriell (Jr., Hartville, OH/Louisville), playing as an individual, shot 178 (90-88) and tied for 45th.

Walsh finished second at the five-team Urbana University Blue Knight Invitational on Friday.  The Cavs shot 360, ten strokes behind champion Tiffin University (350).  Christine Haver fired an 84 to pace the Cavs and finish second, two strokes behind Invitational medalist Kelly Rethman of Tiffin.  Tammy Schumacher finished sixth with an 88, Kaley Foster was seventh with an 89 and Christina Trbovich shot a 99 and finished 11th.  Andrea Ferriell finished 12th, shooting 100 and Stephanie Spitzer shot 101 and tied for 14th. 

The Cavs are back in action on Friday, September 30, when they play in the two-day Ohio Dominican Invitational.

MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (6-0-1) Roll On/Hayes Has Big Week/Cavs Open AMC Play at Urbana

Walsh (6-0-1) remained unbeaten after going 3-0 this past week.  The Cavs won road matches at Daemen, Grace and Saint Francis (Ind.).  This week they open American Mideast Conference South play at Urbana University (2-5, 0-0) on Saturday at 3 pm.  It is the Cavs only match of the week.  Walsh's 6-0-1 start is their best ever under Head Coach Tim Mead, who is in his 24th season.  Mead's 1993 team, his only NAIA National Qualifier, started the season 5-1-1 and finished 21-4.  

Walsh started the week with a 3-0 win at Daemen College in New York on Wednesday.   Jeremy Hess (So., Damascus, MD/St. Johns) put the Cavs on the board in the first half, with his first goal of the season, on assists from Leon O'Neill (Jr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan) and Sam Hayes (So., Blackburn, ENG/St. Augestines).  Walsh led 1-0 at the half.   Zeljko Vasiljevic (So., Akron, OH/Walsh Jesuit) then gave Walsh a 2-0 lead, on assists from O'Neill and Ryan Inama (Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary).  Casey Eck (Fr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) then added an insurance goal on an assist from Greg Keller (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) and Hayes.  Walsh goalkeepers Eric Brockmeier (Sr., Marietta, OH/HS) and Adam Urban (So., Hudson, OH/Walsh Jesuit) combined for the shutout.

Walsh improved to 5-0-1 after shutting out Grace College 5-0 on Saturday in Indiana.  Sam Hayes  had the "Hat Trick," scoring three times for the Cavs.  Hayes scored twice in the first half as the Cavs built a 2-0 lead, then scored the first goal of the second half.  Alex Birtcher (Fr., Napoleon, OH/HS) tallied to give the Cavs a 4-0 lead and Ryan Inama scored to conclude the scoring.  Inama also had two assists. 

Walsh capped the week by blanking the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) 3-0 in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Sunday.  Sam Hayes who had the "Hat Trick" against Grace on Saturday, scored the first two goals in today's win. Alex Birtcher, who also tallied on Saturday, added the third goal. Hayes leads the Cavs in scoring with six goals and two assists for 14 points.  Inama is next with 11 points and a team leading five assists.

Walsh has out scored its opponents 19-3 in the first seven games.  Senior goalie Eric Brockmeier has allowed only three goals in seven games and 625 minutes and has an 0.42 goals against average.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs (3-2-1, 1-0) Drop Two of Three Games

Walsh dropped back-to-back games over the weekend, in suffering its first losses of the year.  After opening the week with a 3-0 win at Muskingum, the Cavs fell 5-0 at Indiana Wesleyan and 2-0 at the University of Saint Francis (Ind.)  This week the Cavs have home matches with Notre Dame College (2-4) on Thursday (3 pm) and with Shawnee State (2-5, 0-2) on Saturday (1 pm).

Walsh defeated Muskingum College 3-0 on Tuesday.  Chrissy Perna (5-8, Fr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 at the 8:42 mark of  the first half on an assist by Abby Swope (5-7, So., Wadsworth, OH/HS).  The Cavs added another first half goal at the 17:53 mark, as Swope scored on an assist from Hailey Rogers (Fr., Green, OH/HS).  Walsh then added an insurance goal in the second half at the 35:04 mark, when Rogers scored on an assist from Amanda Waltz (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover).  Kathy Stuck (5-7, So., Uniontown, OH/Lake) recorded the shutout in goal, stopping three shots.

Walsh's offense, which had scored 11 goals in the first four games, was shutdown twice in Indiana.  NAIA 22nd ranked Indiana Wesleyan blanked Walsh 5-0 on Friday.  Wesleyan scored just 2:28 into the game and led 1-0 at the half.  Saint Francis struck early (12:04) in the first half on Saturday and held on for the 2-0 win. 

Abby Swope leads the Cavs in scoring with four goals and three assists for 11 points.  Chrissy Perna is next with four goals and two assists for 10 points.

VOLLEYBALL: Cavs (9-5, 0-1) Lose AMC Opener/Take Three of Four at Tournament

NAIA ranked Walsh (votes) dropped its AMC South opener to Ohio Dominican at home last week, but bounced back to win three out of four matches at the Saint Francis Tournament in Illinois over the weekend. This week the Cavs are at Notre Dame College on Thursday (7 pm) and play  two conference matches at Urbana University (3 pm) and with Rio Grande (1 pm) on Saturday.

The Cavs were upset in a five-game match against conference rival Ohio Dominican University (8-7) on Tuesday.  ODU won 30-18, 26-30, 28-30, 30-26, 10-15.  The Cavs were lead by freshman outside hitter, Megan McDonald (5-10, Fr, Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran), who had a career-high 25 kills.  Jamie Herr (5-9, Jr, Attica, OH/Seneca East) contributed 21 digs.  Caitlin Doon (5-7, So, Columbus, OH/DeSales) and Erica Parker (6-0, Fr, Concord, OH/Mentor) both added two aces, while Parker also had 2.5 blocks for the match.  Jillian Barry (5-5, So, Salem, OH/HS) led with 64 assists on the night.

Walsh split their first two matches at the Saint Francis Tournament in Joliet, Illinois on Friday.  Indiana Wesleyan defeated the Cavs 24-30, 26-30, 32-30, 30-23 in game one.  Jillian Barry led with 64 assists, Katie Vellucci (5-8, Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) and Megan McDonald paced the Cavs with 12 kills and Caitlin Doon had 14 digs.  Walsh then rebounded to sweep Saint Francis 30-24, 30-24, 30-24.  Barry handed out 41 assists, Doon recorded 11 digs and Jamie Herr (5-9, Jr, Attica, OH/Seneca East) led with 15 kills. Walsh won its final two matches at the Saint Francis on Saturday.  The Cavs swept Grand View College 30-27, 30-26, 30-10, then blanked William Penn 30-27, 30-14, 30-28.  Barry led with 43 assists in the win over Grand View and with 37 in the sweep of William Penn.  Erica Parker led the Cavs' attack with 16 kills and Heather Hernandez (5-9, So., Oakdale, CA/HS) recorded 12 digs.  Against William Penn, Jamie Herr led with 18 kills and 15 digs. 

Jamie Herr leads the Cavs with a 4.02 kills per game average.  Herr has 177 kills.  Freshman Megan McDonalds leads in total kills with 180, but is averaging 4.00 per game.  Jillian Barry is dishing out 12.26 kills per game and Heather Hernandez is averaging 3.70 digs per game.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs (24-3) Perform Well at National Catholic, Finish Fourth

Walsh (24-3) finished fourth in the division two field at the National Catholic Cross Country Meet at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana on Friday.  Joel Dagenhardt (Sr., Marlington, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with a 16th place finish in a time of 26:38. Josh Rogers (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) placed 27th (27:03), Brendan McKee (Akron, OH/St. V-St. Mary) 29th (27:05), Chris Zundel (Jr., Madison, OH/HS) was 31st (27:13), Sean McBride (Jr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) was 37th (27:33), Steve Mackle (Sr., Malvern, OH/HS) was 44th (27:38) and Joe Winnyk (Fr., Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) was 46th (27:41).

Walsh is idle this week.  

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs 11th at National Catholic Meet

Walsh (17-13) finished 11th in the division two at the National Catholic Meet at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana on Friday.  Katie Wirtz (So., Lakewood, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with a 40th place finish in a time of 20:30.  Andrea DiNinno (Fr., Harrison City, PA/Greensburg) placed 45th (20:37), Lindsay Cooper (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) finished 66th (21:07), Ashley Miller (Jr., Kinsman, OH/Badger) 85th (21:30), Tess Francis (Jr., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) 91st (21:35), Alicia Cooper (Fr., Atwater, OH/Waterloo) 119th (22:25) and Erin Koppel (Fr., McDonald, OH/HS) 120th (22:30).

Walsh is idle this week.
