This Saturday, Walsh opens the Mid-States Football Association Mideast season at home, against NAIA No. 3 Saint Xavier University at Fawcett Stadium at 12 pm. The game will be broadcast live on the Walsh University Football Network on News-Talk 640 WHLO and on AM 900 WCER at 11:45 am, and on the internet at www.wcer.us. After a scoreless first quarter, Quincy took a 7-0 lead at the 13:52 mark of the second quarter on a one-yard run by Corey Williams. Walsh tied the game at the 2:35 mark, when Pullen found James Williams (Sr., Lehigh Acers, FL/Sr./Florida International) in the back of the end zone for a four-yard TD pass. Walsh took the lead for good at the four-minute mark of third period, when Pullen hit Rob Lash (Sr., Shelby, OH/HS) on slant for a 28-yard score. Blossomgame closed the scoring with a one-yard plunge at the 12:25 mark of the final period. Pullen completed 16 of 26 passes for 229 yards. Lash caught four passes for 96 yards and Mike McGill (So., Barberton, OH/Coventry) caught a career-best six passes for 74 yards. After not recording an interception in the first three games, Walsh picked off three Quincy passes in the win. Mike Garden (Jr., Akron, OH/Copley), Ryan Kopina (Fr., Wooster, OH/HS) and Joe Phinisee (Sr., Warren, OH/Harding) each intercepted a pass. Blossomgame leads the MSFA in rushing, averaging 122.2 yards per game. He has gained 489 yards and scored three touchdowns. This week, Walsh host NAIA No. 3 Saint Xavier University (4-0). The high-powered Cougars are averaging 44.5 points per game, and won 41-3 against Trinity International last Saturday. Saint Xavier quarterback Billy Yeo completed 32 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored two rushing touchdowns. Yeo connected with Jim Doherty nine times for 160 yards and a touchdown. Bill McKeon returned a kick-off 78 yards to a score. This is the first year for Saint Xavier in the Mideast Division. They reached the NAIA Playoffs last year with a 10-3 overall record and 7-1 mark in the MSFA Midwest. Walsh leads the all-time series 2-1. The two teams last played in 2003. Walsh is 2-0 against the Cougars at Fawcett Stadium. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs Third at Wooster Invitational Walsh (25-4) finished third (91) at the College of Wooster Invitational on Saturday. Ashland University (23) finished first, with Case Western Reserve University (43) placing second. This week, the Cavs will run at the University of Rio Grande on Saturday morning (9:45 am). WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY: Cavs Fifth at College of Wooster Invitational Walsh (22-16) placed fifth at the College of Wooster Invitational today. The Cavs are idle this week. For the second straight week, Kristen LeFever (So., Alliance, OH/Marlington) paced the Cavs with a 16th place finish in a time of 20:49. Andrea DiNinno (Jr., Harrison City, PA/Greensburg CC) was next, placing 22nd in a time of 21:16. Megan Case (Fr., Louisville, OH/HS) was 24th (21:25), Jackie Delameter (Fr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) 42nd (22:29), Terry Simonic (Jr., Cleveland, OH/Regina) 53rd (22:45) and Jen Birney (Fr., Dover, OH/HS) 57th (23:08) MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Win AMC South Opener Walsh (5-2-1, 1-0 AMC S) opened the American Mideast Conference South season with a 5-1 win over Shawnee State last Saturday. Earlier in the week, the Cavs battled Houghton College to a 1-1 double overtime tie on the road. This week, the Cavs host Marietta College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, then play at Cedarville University in an AMC South contest on Saturday. Both matches are under the lights, the Marietta game will start at 6 pm, and the Cedarville match will start at 7 pm. Walsh and Houghton (3-0-3) fought to a 1-1 double overtime tie on Wednesday night. Walsh's Aaron Davis (So., 6-0, Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale) opened the scoring on an unassisted goal at the 28-minute mark of the first half. Houghton tied the game nine minutes into the second half. In an evenly matched game from start to finish, each team had nine shots and each goalie recorded eight saves (Walsh, Ben Pflum’s (Jr., 6-1, Napoleon). Walsh led in corner kicks 5-4. Walsh opened conference play with a 5-1 win over Shawnee State (4-4, 0-1). Lamar Skeeter (Fr., 5-10, Dayton, OH/Fairmont) and Jeremy Hess (Sr., 6-3, Damascus, MD/St. Johns) each scored twice in the win. Skeeter opened the scoring at the eight-minute mark to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead. Hess then made it 2-0 at the 13-minute mark. Each goal was unassisted. Skeeter then extended Walsh's lead to 3-0, on an assist from Alex Birtcher (Jr., 6-1, Napoleon, OH/HS) at the 24-minute mark, as Walsh led 3-0 at the half. Shawnee's Jordan Buck scored eight minutes into the second half, as the Bears trimmed the lead to 3-1. Hess would then score his second goal, on an assist from Aaron Davis (So., 6-0, Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale), at the 62-minute mark. Greg Keller (Sr., 6-0, Napoleon, OH/HS) closed the scoring for the Cavs, with an unassisted goal at the 70-minute mark. Lamar Skeeter leads the Cavs in scoring with eight goals and 17 points. Alex Birtcher is next with 10 points, on three goals and four assists. Walsh has out scored the opposition 20-13 and are holding them to 1.55 goals per contest. WOMEN’S SOCCER: Cavs Win Twice, To Snap Two-Game Skid Walsh (7-2, 1-1 AMC S) snapped a two-game losing streak with back-to-back wins last week. The Cavs blanked Geneva College 3-0- on Wednesday, and then won their first American Mideast Conference South game of the year with a 2-1 win over Shawnee State on Saturday. This week, the Cavs play Marietta College at home on Tuesday (4 pm) and Mount Vernon Nazarene in an AMC South game on Wednesday (7 pm). Walsh then travels to Cedarville University for an AMC South match-up on Saturday at 4:30 pm. Walsh snapped a two-game losing streak, with a 3-0 win at Geneva College on Wednesday night. Rachel Burcher (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had three saves in goal in recording the shutout. Stephanie Sussman (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) scored the games' first goal, 1:47 into the second half, to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead. Leya Spence (Jr., Mansfield, OH/Madison) then gave Walsh a 2-0 lead, as she scored on a penalty kick at the 68:51 mark. Abby Swope (Sr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) closed the scoring on an assist from Abbie Sullivan (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) at the 78:05 mark. Rachel Naumann's (Fr., Hinckley, OH/Highland) second half goal snapped a 1-1 tie and gave Walsh a 2-1 win over Shawnee State University (5-2-1, 0-1). Naumann's game-winner was unassisted, and came at the 70:59 mark. Leya Spence (Jr., Mansfield, OH/Madison) gave the Cavs a 1-0 lead, on an unassisted goal at the 58:14 mark of the second half, after the two teams battled to a scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes. Shawnee scored the tying goal at the 67:54 mark. Walsh keeper Rachel Burcher recorded four saves. Walsh out shot Shawnee State 17-5 and led in corner kicks 5-2. Naumann owns the Cavs’ scoring lead with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Chrissy Summers (So., Doylestown, OH/Chippewa) has 11 points, on four goals and three assists. Abby Swope (Sr., Wadsworth, OH/HS)) is also in double figures with 10 points on five goals. VOLLEYBALL: Cavs Win Indiana Tech Tournament, Hit Road for Two AMC South Matches Next NAIA No. 21 Walsh improved to 14-3, after winning the Indiana Tech Tournament last weekend. This week, the Cavs (14-3, 1-0 AMC S) hit the road for a pair of American Mideast Conference South Division matches. The Cavs travel to Portsmouth, Ohio to meet Shawnee State on Friday night (7 pm), and travel to the University of Rio Grande for an Saturday morning (11 am) match. Walsh won four straight matches to win the Indiana Tech Tournament. The Cavaliers defeated (RV) Taylor University and University of Michigan-Dearborn on Friday. The Cavaliers defeated the Taylor by the scores of 30-21, 30-18, and 30-26. Walsh was led by Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) with 41 assists. Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA) led the defense with a team-high 20 digs while Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) had a team-high 10 kills, four service aces, and 2.5 blocks. Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) also added nine kills on a .600 hitting percentage. Against Michigan-Dearborn, Barry dished out 42 assists and added 13 digs. Hernandez led the defense with 18 digs. The duo outside hitters of Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) and Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) led the offense with 14 kills apiece. Defensive specialist, Caitlin Doon (5-7, Sr., Columbus, OH/DeSales) added 10 digs. The Cavaliers defeated UMD by the scores of 30-21, 30-23, 30-28. On Saturday, Walsh defeated Indiana Tech in a marathon match by the scores of 30-23, 21-30, 30-23, 27-30, and 15-13. Barry had 55 assists and a career-high 24 digs. Hernandez also had a career-best 40 digs. The offense was led by Erica Parker with 11 kills, Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) added 10, McDonald 14, and Dattilo had a team-high 17 kills. Defensive specialist, Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) added 17 digs, while Parker also added four service aces and 5 blocks. In the last match of the weekend, Walsh defeated Saint Xavier University by the scores of 30-26, 30-19, and 30-21. Barry had 33 assists, 10 digs, and three service aces. Hernandez had a team-high 17 digs, with McDonald contributing a team-high 12 kills. Parker added eight kills on a .500 hitting percentage, 13 digs and two blocks. Parker was named to the All-Tournament Team and Heather Hernandez was named Tournament MVP. |
